A couple weekends ago, Libby, Pam, Kallie, and I all loaded into Libby's car after school on Friday and drove to Comayagua for a visit.
The other 3 girls stayed at a hotel while I stayed with Walter.
Friday night we spent the evening at Sangria's. This is the bar that I constantly referred to in my previous Honduran year as "Morgan's bar", as this is the bar owned by my American friend Morgan. The place looks AWESOME! He's expanded it into the bar that used to be a disco next door. He added a door that goes between the two so there's two sections of the bar. There's still the chill, sit-down section with a nice outdoor patio, as well as a new disco with dance music and fancy lights.
Friday we all sat around a table outside and enjoyed food from his menu as well as drinks and conversation. We met a few contractors from the US who were great fun. Some of Walt's friends came as well and we all enjoyed the evening. One of the contractors even paid for the entire bill!
Saturday morning Walt left for work (at the
"The Fish Place"
Picking out my lunch centre) and I slept a little longer than met up with Pam and Kallie so that they could come to visit Walter and see the centre. They loved it. Kallie ended up sponsoring a child on the spot and plans on visiting again. Such good things they are doing there at the centre. Such a different life from the privileged students we're used to teaching at school.
Saturday afternoon we met up with Jimmy and Sarah who were in town visiting Jimmy's family, and all of us (minus Walt, as he was still working) went to get lunch at a place just out of town that we call "the fish place". You choose your own fish from the freezer and they fry it up for you and serve it with yummy plantains and pickled onions and cabbage.
Afterwards, Kallie, Libby, Pam, and I went back to their hotel and layed out by the pool soaking up the sun. Felt nice to just relax.
Libby and I then went to watch Walt and Bryan play some basketball with their friends before we all got ready and met back at Central Park, where we had dinner at "Ricardo's" (restaurant
owned by a guy named Ricardo) while sitting in the plaza. I LOVE this place to hang out. That was the biggest thing for Kallie too (it was her first time in Comayagua). She was just SO excited that there were safe places to hang out (even after dark) and everything is within walking distance, as this is not the case in Tegus.
After dinner we went back to Sangria's where we did some dancing before we head over to Villa Real: my favourite bar with disco, karaoke, and outdoor courtyard - owned by my old student's parents. The girls loved this bar as the atmosphere is perfect for sitting outside chatting in the courtyard but then heading inside to do some dancing. We had a great night.
Sunday we went to lunch at "La Casita" (The Little House) which in my opinion has the best BBQed food in Comayagua! Along with Libby, Kallie, Pam, Walt, and I, we had another guest join us for lunch - my new kitty! Walter's mom's cat had kittens that she didn't want so I said once she was old enough to be removed from the mother, I would take her.
I had decided on the name Suki and we had her in a cage I bought for transport. She was NOT happy. She wouldn't stop meowing and I didn't know what to do. Walt decided it'd be better to take her o ut of the cage and hold her, so we brought her into the restaurant and took turns passing her back and forth between the 2 of us, while the other ate. I totally know how parents with a crying baby feel now!
The journey back to Tegus was tough. Suki meowed for the first 45 minutes and then managed to calm down and sleep in my lap for the last 45 minutes.
When she arrived at my apartment, she spent the first couple hours hanging out under the bed in my spare room. Later that night, she started to venture out and eventually ate some food and used her litter box.
Suki's been great ever since... mostly. She spends the day in my bedroom and bathroom (where her litter box is) and is shut off from the rest of my house so she doesn't destroy my furniture. I've mostly kitten-proofed my room (tying up the
curtains during the day, tucking away all wires, and ensuring she has MANY toys to keep her occupied!) My room looks like a jungle gym. I've got empty boxes from my shipment from Canada for her to play in and climb on. She has two scratching posts and multiple balls and toys lying around. I bought her a water dispenser and keep her food dish full throughout the day. She knows she gets canned food in the morning but then is good about spreading her dry-food out throughout the day - not like Sassy and Sophie who get their meals fed to them at specific times 4 times a day 😊
I took her to the vet and she had her first set of shots. The vet said she looked beautiful and should come back 2 weeks later for her second round of shots. When she's 6 months, I'll have her spayed. Suki's been great at using her litter box. It's tough to find clumping litter here, as most people don't have housecats; if they do, they use sand in a box for litter. My only complaint with her is that she's SO hyper. She HAS to sleep right
up against me in bed or ON me, but then decides to get up in the middle of the night and pounce at my feet, bite my hands or face, and run around like a crazy person. She's cute though. I like having the company.
