Thursday 14thFebruary: Roatan, Honduras. We sailed into Coxen Hole Roatan just after daybreak after an overnight journey directly east from Belize City, and it was very nice to see green hills again after the totally flat scenery of Mexico, Louisiana and Belize. Roatan is a small island with an interesting history having been under British rule/occupation before it was exchanged for Belize. Consequently, many of the communities still have English names e.g. Coxen Hole is named after a 16th Century English pirate John Coxen. Henry Morgan and Edward Teach (Blackbeard) also based themselves in Roatan at various times. It’s very small, only 20 miles long and on average a mile wide. After docking we walked off the ship to see how much the taxis would charge to take us to a resort in the north of ... read more

One morning we were eating breakfast at a small local restaurant, Dan had just finished eating and was standing up when two geckos fell from the ceiling right on his plate. I was still sitting down and eeeked out a little screech. The geckos were stunned and it took them a minute to slither off. They were either mating or wrestling ;) because they have always been quite sure footed when I have observed them on ceilings. That being said, I can not help but check the ceiling when I eat now to make sure that there aren't any right above me. Another interesting thing that was discussed was the fact that the power went off for about a half an hour on both of the Tuesday nights that we were on the island. Rumor has ... read more

We started our scuba diving class which consisted of watching videos and answering questions on what we learned. After a couple days of theory we got in the shallow part of the beach and had a series of skills we had to accomplish. This was more difficult than it should have been for me because once again I am a chicken when it comes to these things. The other two people in our class had colds and were not cleared by the doctor to dive so Dan and I had one on one attention which was nice. Marc took Dan and progressed and Maya stayed with me. She was so wonderful, patient and sympathetic. She told me she had a really difficult time at first as well and nearly quit because she was scared. She had ... read more

I know I have missed blogging about several places but I simply can not bare to start where I left off so I will go back to Monday January 7th. On this day we arrived in La Ceba Honduras by bus. We stuffed 5 of us plus the driver in the taxi cab which was headed to the port to catch a boat to Utila. We had about an hour before we needed to leave so we got some breakfast at a nearby restaurant. As it rained sideways into the tiny restaurant we joked about what a rough boat ride it was going to be. I knew in my heart that the boat ride would probably be extremely unpleasant for me but my brain refused to except the wisdom of my heart. Dan played his guitar ... read more

After a lovely sea day cruising past Cuba, we arrived in Grand Cayman. We were just about to go off the ship and do a little snorkeling when the skies opened up and it rained buckets. We waited for quite a while and then it got too close to the Riviera’s departure time so we just enjoyed the day on the ship. We have been to Cayman a number of times and have always gone swimming with the manta rays. We were sorry to miss them this time. When we anchored off Cozumel it was raining again but fortunately it let up long enough for us to take a stroll around town and find a nice family restaurant which served up some pretty good food --Mexican, of course. The first two weeks of December are traditionally ... read more

Roatan Dive 16 Yawning hamlet Nikon D200 I spent the dive following my Juv hog fish cleaning different fish. I was diving with the Nikon D200 set up and it took me a few dives to get used to it. I had not taken a shot of them yet. I saw 4 of them. I scared 3 before I figured out that I was very aggressive approaching them. When I got to the 4th I approached slowly and let them get used to me. I actually watch them eat some masked ... read more

12 19 2012 Roatan Dive 12. Mating eels We had a late start. I missed my deadline for Ocean Views. The system took my payment but not the uploads. We dove the Coco View West Wall once again. Steve spotted sargassum on the surface. I grabbed a piece and I noticed a weird shrimp on it. I bolted off to grab SK fin and I guess I lost the shrimp with the current. I grab another piece and It had 3 shrimp in it: a sargassum shrimp, a stripped clear one and a tiny whiny one. I tried to hold it steady for SK but the surge was moving us not even holding my breath. I took them a little deeper but the water was a bit disturbed and it was difficult to focus. I hope ... read more

Roatan Dive 8. East Coco View wall We didn’t do the night dive and didn’t wake up for a 6 am dive. We went on the quest for the big eye with the huge isopod on its front head. Diane said it lives “to the left - just past where the wall really starts, near the big overhang, go a little further than the overhang in around 25'. There is a small cave in one of the crevasses. Back in there is a big eye with a HUGE isopod on it's forehead”. We didn’t see it but definitely going to look for it again. Steve found Diane’s whip coral shrimp and got it with a nice blue background. Thanx Diane for that one. I will post the shot if he gives me the ok. When Steve ... read more
