With our feet buried in Honduran sand, Dad and I sighed with relief after a long 2-day journey across three countries by planes, boats, and buses. There is no travel more exciting than when the plans are spontaneous and very flexible. The following is a run down of the means by which we traveled, the bumps we ran into along the way, and finally the results of a successful mission. To accomplish our goal, at least one leg of the trip needed to be by air. Much to our surprise, the domestic flights were rather inexpensive and allowed us to cut our travel time considerably. We took a small aircraft (15 passenger capacity) from Northern Belize to the Southern tip of the country (Punta Gorda), which made stops in each major town along the way. We ... read more

Before we get to the sun and sand, must tell you about the trip there. We left Livingston on the 4am ferry (you can only get to Livingston by boat).... it was about a 1 hours boat ride in the blackness of early morning. We got to the port town of Puerto Barrios where we were acousted by taxi drivers offering to take us to a town to catch the bus to the border. We have figured out how the scheme works: the closer the people are to the boat or bus you are getting off from, the more expensive the "deal" is. So we walked 500m down the road and saved ourselves being charged 4 times the price. We bordered a mini bus headed for the border(1 hour) and met a really great Hondurian couple ... read more

Two days in Rio Dulce and I meet a gentleman who is heading to Roatan. He offers me passage on his sailboat. The Lynn B III is a beautiful 68 footer with teak decks and an amazing interior. We have an amazing sail to Livingston down the river and spend a few hours on land getting supplies and clearing customs. As we fill the dingy with our stocks of soda and beer. Four familiar faces appear on the dock. Fellow travelers I had met in San Pedro and Rio Dulce. They had just arrived in Livingston and were on their way to the Bay Islands as well. We offered to take them and they accepted. Another forty minutes later we pulled anchor and we're on our way. Now we were told, great weather, smooth sailing. It ... read more

Yes, I had found paradise!!!!!!!! Woke up and got my beach stuff together, and headed down from the hotel towards the town. The weather is amazing, as it always is, and there in daylight is the first glimpse of paradise, white sand with wooden beach huts serving as shops and bars dotted around, beautiful crystal clear indigo water, with dark coral reef amongst it. Amazing! We walked along the coastline to the far end of the Beach, and took in the sun. Then swam in the amazing water, you can just float, and there are exotic fish around you like Baracuda. The Coral Reef is beautiful and you can snorkel and see all it has to offer. Just spent allday on the beach, and then caught a taxi, a water taxi back to the hotel!!! The ... read more

I got the first bus out of Placencia to Dangriga, which takes just under 2 very bumpy hours. The bus driver was waving and hooting his horn at all the people he knew down the roads (apparently just about everyone!!). The boat was meant to leave at about 9ish .. but in the end we didn't leave Belize till about 11am. The boat was small and had less than 20 people on board. All was going fine .. I was going to say smoothly .. but it wasn't that smooth, when a bolt came out of the engine and they had to hold onto the engine to prevent it going overboard. We sat in choppy seas for 30 minutes while they fixed the problem .. getting tossed from side to side. By the time that they ... read more

“Is that rain?” Who ever thought that three small words could usher in a more, err, colourful period of travel adventure? Waking in beautiful, spectacular La Ceiba early, we aimed to get to the terminal ASAP so we were certain to make the ferry to Utila. Utila is an island off the coast of mainland Honduras that was used as a hideout by pirates who would plunder Spanish ships that were carrying bounty the Spanish had plundered from South American Indians. The population of the pirates in these parts grew to 5000 or so until the authorities killed or enslaved the mauraudering bunch. Nice. Nearly as nice as the weather that bucketed down and filled the streets of La Ceiba with floating refuse. We aimed to create our own pirate ship while in Honduras. We had ... read more

Uh-oh... camera playing up. Had to post her back to England for a bit of TLC, poor little lamb and having trouble connecting my disposables to the computer while I wait for a new one to be posted out to me here. Anyway, so, where was I? Fresh out of Xela and filled to bursting point with Spanish. Knowing only too well the virtues of language consolidation, the most sensible thing to do here was to head straight for Honduras' English-speaking Bay Islands for a spot of scuba diving. Having phoned ahead to check, I was pleased to discover that the journal I'd managed to leave behind in a hostel in Antigua was waiting for me, so I took a day off to stop off en route and pick it up. I was greeted with somebody ... read more

OK Andrew is here today and helping, I am typing! 28/12/05 and 29/12/05 - Granada (hot, hot, hot!) Day one we walked around and admired the magnificent and colourful Spanish colonial buildings. We spoke to a guy at a church, Iglesia de Merced, and he said we could climb the bell tower for a donation. The view at the top was absolutely spectacular and we could see Lago Nicaragua. We also climbed out on the roof because we were alone. The church was built in the early 1500s and is absolutely beautiful itself. Night - had "mojitos" with the group - rum, sugar, soda, mint, ice - and at some point in the evening I decided cooling off in the baby jesus fountain would be a good idea. Day two we decided to navigate our own ... read more

Well I have finally given into the Travel Blog idea although I will not have pictures until I get a card reader at Christmas time (I seem to have lost mine somewhere along the way). Just as it has been described, Utila is amazing (minus the sand flies) with cheap good food, accomodation and a good night life. While the diving was a bit weird, and a little awkard to start I have grown quite accustomed to it. The night dive which I did last night, and the dive to 30m today were both incredible. Turtles, Octupus, Angel Fish, Eels, and lobsters are just some of what I have seen so far. I have two more dives tomorrow morning, one of which I get to use a digital for, so I will have pictures from that ... read more

Scuba diving rules! Damn I can't write about it because this internet cafe closes in 5 minutes and I need to post photo's. Well it took me more than one day but I now have the time to update this! Jord and I are now certified scuba divers, Ryan will be in about 3 hours when he finishes his last 18m dive. It has been an incredible experience, and we're going to do our advanced training starting on Saturday or so. We plan to do night, wreck, deep sea, navigation and peak performance buoyancy dives. We'll be down around ship wrecks at 30m soon! I had a little trouble equalizing on my first 12m dive but sorted it all out and have a much better system now. Found out yesterday that there's a place in the ... read more
