I had a relatively quiet day on the ship today. I ordered a breakfast burrito for breakfast by the pool and then headed off the boat to the shopping area that was close by. I walked around the area and surprisingly did not purchase anything. I got back on the boat and since it was so quiet I went out by the pool and read most of the day away. It was really nice to finally relax and enjoy some quiet time. I wound up meeting a small group for drinks spontaneously at the casino bar and then a group of us went to the Pasta Restaurant for dinner. It was really good as we had shared portions of calamari, meatballs, and salad for the first courses. Then for the entrée I ordered the Chicken Parmesan ... read more

Well, it's Thanksgiving and for the third year in a row I am spending it with family but out of the country. Michael and I have been invited to go to a resort tonight to endure a Thanksgiving buffett with probably mostly Americans, but I think we have picked out a small local place for a fish dinner! On Monday we wandered the West End including a very small chocolate 'factory' where they roast, blend, mix, and make the chocolate by hand, including even wrapping each individual bar. Talk about small scale entrepreneurs! We then headed out for a late lunch of ballenas (spelled multiple ways) which are flour tortillas, often made fresh when you order, smeared with refried beans and then they add any one of a number of things...eggs, pork, chicken, etc. Trust me, ... read more

Shaun arranged for his friend, Maricuny (Cuny for short), to take us out fishing on his 40' charter boat for our first day on the island. Michael and I had a light breakfast (we have a kitchen in our rooms) and then Shaun joined us for the short hop to the marina. We were forewarned that the weather had been a bit dicey and there would be a significant chop....indeed. But the sky was clear and the fish, while not too cooperative, were there. We picked up several tuna and bonita, which we used for bait and managed to spend most of the day feeding barracuda. High light of the trip was the on board sushi bar. Cuny and Shaun would take the tuna and cut thin slices of it, add a little hot sauce (which ... read more

Michael and I met up at the Miami airport and flew together to Roatan. Then the fun started. Our plane was delayed so we ended up being the third of three jets all slamming into Coxen Cove Airport within about an hour of each other. Opps. Here is a tip, if you fly in here make sure you use the toilet on the plane before landing and pack a snack for the immigration line! It took about two hours to get through the line. Michael's friends Maggie and Shaun, along with Darcy their four-year-old spark plug, me us at the airport, having waited, bless their hearts, for over three hours! Darcy somehow had managed to hold on through the whole ordeal and then, when we were at a place to grab something quick to eat, entertained ... read more

... read more

I had driven my car from Montreal, Canada (hometown) over 2700 kilometers to reach southern Florida where my folks own a condo. Bev and my dad joined me. Along the way we stopped to visit family in Savannah, Georgia for a night but otherwise the drive was uninterrupted. It’s always nice heading south, it just keeps getting warmer and warmer. Once in Florida, Bev and I found a last minute deal aboard the Norwegian Getaway that was just too good to pass up. And so, a week later, we found ourselves aboard one of the largest vessels in the world and heading towards Central America. Our first stop was in Roatan, Honduras. This is one of the Bay Islands and located about 65 kilometers north of mainland Honduras. The island sits on an exposed coral reef. ... read more

In June of 2016, Angela and I embarked on what has become our annual trip with the Emmanuels. This time, we headed down to Mel's parents' retirement property on Roatan island, in Honduras. After a relatively long day of travel, including a lengthy layover, we made our way to the Roatan airport. A short 30 minute cab ride to West End and we arrived at the duplex where we'd be staying the next 3 nights. So comforting to stay in a condo where you can feel like home but in a tropical paradise. We quickly unpacked, walked down the road to grab a beer, and hop on the $3 boat taxi over to West Bay, the more lavish resort beach area. After sharing a tasty lunch, we jumped in the bath water ocean for some spectacular ... read more

From Granada, I took the short one-hour chicken bus ride to Nicaragua's capital - Managua. The place has a bit of a reputation for being dangerous and the stories I had heard about the place from other travellers I have met didn't really fill me with confidence either. It was however, a necessary stop as I needed to catch an international bus from here over the border to Honduras - there wasn't really anything else between here and Caribbean coast of Honduras that I was interested in seeing so I was making a beeline for the water and this was the quickest way to do it. Also, I had still to find the elusive replacement camera battery charger that I had lost somewhere in Costa Rica. It was now approaching three weeks without the use of ... read more

Is travel a component of self education, or merely entertainment? Obviously, it can be both, but I think many of us delude ourselves into thinking what we usually do when we travel is any more than entertainment. For instance, when my husband and I first met (three and a half years ago) we went on a couple of cruises. We certainly did travel, and we saw many terrific islands in the Caribbean. But mostly? It was Diamonds International and other tourists traps. We saw little of how people lived in these places and we had few contacts with the locals that weren't more than a brief and shallow transaction. But, that wasn't true for my most intense memory from our first cruise. One of the stops was Roatán, Honduras, a terrific island in the western Caribbean ... read more
