Poor neglected blog! I’m coming back to you, I promise. Life has been a bit crazy, with the end of last semester, followed by a wonderful 3 week break from school, followed by a bit of a stressful return to school. The winter concert at the end of last semester went very well, and I was really happy with it. The students did a great job, everything ran smoothly, and the venue was packed with people. At the start of winter break, I went to the beach a ton with my friends and finally got to do some diving. I also took one day to go with a bunch of friends over towards the East end of the island. The first stop on our trip was Herby’s, a sports bar. This wouldn’t seem exciting, EXCEPT that ... read more

Our arrival at the La Ceiba ferry terminal was a little rushed and difficult to manage as this time we had our four suitcases plus two very heavy, awkwardly sized, enormous boxes of groceries, fruit and vegetables and four grocery bags full of food as well. So it is not surprising that in the process of checking in our luggage and the boxes and carrying all our extra bags through the terminal, we forgot to to swallow our sea sickness tablets! Big Mistake! We purchased first class tickets on the ferry - not sure if it was worth the extra money or not, but when things start to get rough, we are very thankful. The upper, first class deck was fairly empty for our 4.30pm departure, and once ensconced with some snacks and a complimentary soft ... read more

Today we arrived in Roatan about 8:30am. Coxen Hole is a small town of t-shirt shops and the obligatory Diamonds International and Tanzanite shops built directly adjacent to the dock. My excursion left at 9:00am from the pier. We made 4 stops: Plaza Mall, where I bought some Lamanan (SP?) black and white pottery. It is an old custom recently revived to give single Honduran women skills . Other things to buy here are handcarved mahogany, everything from tiny boxes to carved doors ($2000 including shipping), the craftsmanship is great. Next stop was the Iguana Farm. 4 little guys welcomed us at the road, I grabbed my camera. Should have waited a bit, there were HUNDREDS, just roaming around free. We were each given a giant leaf, and put it down and they came running at ... read more

The next morning saw us get up at 3.30am and jump on a 7 hour bus ride in a private van. Good because it was only us, bad because 12 people stuffed into a minivan at crazy o´clock with hardly any legroom and no headrests to lay our weary heads. It made for some interesting sleeping positions! I was lucky enough to sleep most of the way. Our morning was punctuated with a breakfast stop, at which I saw an English girl from another bus who had also been at my hostel in Flores. The traveller trail continues! Honduras is pretty crazy like Guatemala, with very bad roads and very skinny animals. In fact, central America has been having extreme weather and there have been many landslides. At one point the road was so muddy and ... read more

For 2 ½ years, I’ve been waiting to return to Roatan. This is my favorite port because it is so blue and not over-commercialized. (Although Carnival is quickly changing that with their Mahogany Bay area and new Disney-feeling port shopping area.) I can’t comment on this designed area because we didn’t visit it more than just long enough to walk through it to the taxi where we made friends with a local, Omar, for the day as he drove us to our destinations. Our friends Ryan and Dana were with us (Me and Jason) so we wanted them to see the West End. We didn’t get out for drinks like we had originally intended. Instead, we drove through for a quick look so we’d have more time at the beach. We made quick stops to ... read more

My time in Roatan has been great. The divemasters, boat captains, kitchen staff, housekeepers, well, pretty much everyone here is fantastic. They are all incredibly friendly and fun. Project work has been slow the last couple weeks, which is quite unfortunate. In case you didn’t know, or was wondering why I’m not in LL at the moment, I extended my time here 2 more weeks and now fly back the 25th. The reasoning for this was because I had a couple really successful weeks right before I was set to leave, and didn’t want to go back when I was finally getting some good data. However, as Noel Luck would have it, I haven’t been able to capture any of the turtles I have seen recently. I did finally start seeing them a bit more the ... read more

Apologies in advance, but you’re likely about to get an earful (eyeful?) of the good, the bad and the ugly. I still continue to meet some pretty amazing people every week. It’s great to be able to learn so much about different folks, but Saturdays are getting sadder every week. CCV runs, for the most part, on Saturday-Saturday trips, so from about 8-1 on Saturdays I am stuck saying my goodbyes on the docks. I have made some great friends here, though, and am confident I will have some wonderful dive buddies in the future! Aside from great divers (for the most part), I also managed to meet some incredibly generous people. Since I got here with my mask, snorkel and wetsuit, I accumulated a variety of goodies. Even better, I bought a really nice regulator ... read more

You’re probably wondering why this blog update took such a long time in the making. One reason is because I have a tendency to write novels, if that wasn’t already apparent. This entry is about a week-long process, but my self-diagnosed ADD probably has a bit to do with that as well. However, the main reason this update has taken so long is because I needed some time to cool down and reflect on a very unfortunate encounter I experienced last week. Since arriving on the island, I have made a number of contacts with scientists, conservationists, and locals who just want to help rescue turtles from fishermen looking to make some money off hungry people’s next meal. Unfortunately, turtle happens to be a meat of choice for many islanders. Some people on the island started ... read more

Hello again! As usual, I am slacking off immensely in my blog updates. Rest assure, I am having a wonderful time and working my tail off! The last 2 weeks here at CoCoView have been a blast! Today was another sad day of guest turnover, and goodbyes to Izzy and Gen, two fabulous divemaster interns from Canada. They definitely helped make my first weeks at CCV unforgettable! But before I get too ahead of myself, let me start where I left off.... As I mentioned in my previous update, the last couple days at Fantasy were a bit hectic with the move and busy weekend, in addition to whatever sickness that chose the perfectly wrong time to plague me. I did get the chance to hang out on the West End again during my "mobile" period, ... read more

I’m sitting in my classroom, and just finished doing the final preparations for tomorrow- the first day of school! The room is still a bit bare, compared to a typical American elementary classroom, but I’m proud of it anyway. When I got here the room was completely empty with literally nothing in it, and it took a lot of work to get it where it is now. It’s amazing how fast I’ve started to think of things like bulletin boards and decorative posters as a luxury. Two of the other elementary teachers and I had about a 10 minute discussion today about how it would be so great to have those giant rolls of paper. Being here makes me realize how many resources I took for granted in the States. To the side is a ... read more
