Gautemala At the end of the last blog I was approaching the end of my time at Lago Atitlan but had extended my stay for a couple of day haviong found a nice quiet hostel to relax in. My plan to move to the quiet town of Jaibalito on Lago Atitlan worked quite well for the first two days and I managed to get a little Spanish done as well as visiting a few more villages around the lake either on bik... Lovely hotel to rest in after 11 hours walking! No such luxuries for the 4 dayers who joined later.

Didnt look much from the outside but superb when you got in. Even had toilets Miss Marks would be happy with.

Day 4 of walking

This was the first day with the newbies from the 4 day trip and our 4th day of solid walking. Photo is at the top of the highest non volcanic point in central America with Aussie John. In the background on the far right is Tacamoco the highest point in central America (I climbed it previously) and the perfect cone volcano is Santa Marie which is the backdrop for Xela (which I also climbed). Go me!

Without people. Santa Marie is more clear. The scenery in Guatemal really is rubbish!

Dramatic scenery. From the top you would see volcanos letting off steam.

Beautiful. And the scenery was nice too.

Pleased to have made it. We were told it was all downhill from here. It wasnt! Began to dislike the phrase "mountain flat" which seemed to relate to any landscape up to 45 degrees inclination!

With some locals. The local guy to the left is wearing the traditional costume which they wear all the time. At the top he talked for about an hour about the atrocities he witnessed during the civil war which was fascinating but difficult to listen to. The war was particularly intense in these parts.

Average at best!

A rather spooky dolls head we found that was hidden in a lot of sleeping bags for amusement.

Stripey red trouses, embroided whit and blue jackets over a John Cena (wrestler) T-shirt. Two in this picture but 100s more around.

Passed out on the track, perhaps not the best place! The only thing more common in Todos Santos than John Cena T-shirts were drunks passed out on the street, bloody noses and people being supported by there friends.

You could pay $3.5 US for two times up and back. I opted out deterred by the head on collision of two horses (who both broke bones and had to be dragged off) and which almost provoked a full scale riot between the two owners. Freddie the crazy German was keen though (in picture) as were 2 or 3 others from our group.
