My classmates and the teachers watching the USA World Cup game on a break at school. We lost :( 6/22/06
I think I have discovered it: HOT WATER!!!!! I´m scared to say it aloud as I don´t want to jinx what might soley be luck, but I think I have found the recipe for success. I´ll elaborate in a minute.
First, I want to revisit yesterday afternoon. After leaving here, I bought ice cream for Amilcar´s birthday party (which is today) and walked down a street I haven´t been down before and low and behold I see a sign that says ¨Terapista del habla y lengaje¨Speech and Language Therapist. Well, seeing this I had to stop. In my everly frustrating spanish, I talked to the most beautiful Guatemalan woman I´ve seen so far, who just happens to have the same career as I do. She also spoke faster than Cubans so who knows if everything I think she says is actually right. However, what I think she said when we spoke for about 10 minutes was that in Guatemala you need to go to university for 4 years to be an SLP. She works in the hospital in the mornings and works in her clinic in her house in the afternoons. She sees adults and children, but does
My shower head
A tad scary, isn´t......now you can see why hot water is so elusive in these parts! :) not work on swallowing. Evidently there are other specialists who do this. She charges less than a tenth of what is charged in the states. She asked me a little about what I do in the states, how long I had been here and then complimented me on my accent. She said it didn´t sound American at all. I am very proud of that......if only the rest would follow. I´m starting to realize that while 3 wks here is improving my spanish greatly, coming back bilingual is a tad overzealous. I´ll just have to continue my studies.......who knows where that will take me 😉
Last night, 3 Americans (including myself), a German guy and a girl from Denmark went to a place called Bagel Barn........those who know me well know my obsession with bagels. And let me tell you, while these were not Miami or NY bagels, I was ecstatic just to see a bagel! (Am I always talking about food? What is wrong with me?) Anyway, a bagel shmeared with garlic cream cheese and topped with veggies was heaven and at this restaurant, they were showing one of my favorite movies, Serendipity. A great night!

Birthday Party
L-R Me, Maria Teresa, Teri, Amilcar. I love the way they sing Happy Birthday here! the HOT shower.......this is my proposed recipe that I intend to duplicate. Rule 1: Avoid taking showers first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Middle of the day is best. Rule 2 : Use your shampoo bottle to flip the heat switch (looks like a light switch with numerous wires linked to the faucet) to avoid electrocution. Rule 3: Turn water on, allow a few minutes of cold water, turn water off, wait 5-10 seconds, turn water on and joula! Hot water. But don´t get too excited, bc this only lasts for 2 minutes and then you have to start the whole process again. I´ll let you know if it´s a recipe for success or not! Wish me luck!!!!!
Today in classes, I spoke with Andres (he´s out of school this week) and he helped me tell the story of the 3 Little Pigs in Spanish and I got to write down some of his songs for the kids at work. Then one of the teachers brought in her 30 mos old daughter and I played with her on the computer for a while. Finally, I got to hear some developing spanish! It´s been a good
Salsa Lesson
Here I am strutting my stuff. I even got a kiss from the teacher after class! Watch out!!! day! The sun is out, I have the recipe for hot water, in a few minutes I have a salsa lesson at my school, and later a b-day party for Amilcar. Who could ask for more?
6/23/06
Last night was a blast!!!!! After writing, I had my first Guatemalan salsa lesson. There were 4 of us girls and 4 guys and what a hoot it was. I´ve learned all of it in other classes before but never have I danced with German, American, and Guatemalan men all on the same day! The teacher used me as an example. It was a riot! He complimented me and asked us to come to his studio to take more of his classes. There are at least of few of us who want to do it. I, ofcourse, can´t wait! I think I might´ve been born to shake my hips! (Maybe that´s why they´re the size they are😊.
Following that, was Amilcar´s party! What a hoot. The family decorated with balloons and set up the dining room. At dinner, we had a special meal that consisted of what I think was sweet potatos and chicken wrapped in banana leaves. Then there was a homemade birthday cake, and ofcourse the ice cream I bought. I love the way they sing Happy Birthday here. I wish I had taped it! It was a riot!!!!! The family dynamic here is so full of love and respect. I really enjoyed being a part of the celebration last night!
After dinner, there were a group of 8 of us who went to an Irish bar. Doleep, Martin, Stina, Kelsey, Johannes, Abby, Maria, Lindsey and I had a great time. It was nice to just hang out and chat. There are a group of us heading to Xela this wkend. (BW- get excited and send advice!!!!) There are hot springs there that I´m dying to swim in......HOT WATER-----------WHAT??!!??!!???!!!!
Love and miss you all!!!!!!!!!!

Almost Seven Days
As I continue to count down the days until I see you, I realize that I'll need to add a few more things to my shopping list - LIKE MORE ELECTRICAL TAPE for your shower. Try not to get electrocuted and stay away from the kissing Salsa instructors!! I love you, miss you and can't wait to get down there to see you in almost seven days!! Enjoy Xela and be safe. - AJ
