Wednesday August 1 - Murielle fed me another lovely breakfast today, though I admit I'm more in the mood for something warm and savory than cold and sweet, but it was still good, and very filling. I spent the morning organizing a bit, watching a tv show and skyping with Jeroen and my mom. It's weird to be back in the world of my own room, air conditioning, being a tourist, and eating chips and chocolate. I had turned off the snacks in Dominica cold turkey, but as soon as I got here I bought - and am eating - all the snacks. Our final ferry trip took us north from Dominica to Guadeloupe, another French department. Its two main islands are connected by short causeways over mangrove swamps. We head onto the westerly island of Basse Terre, to the village of Vieux Habitants. Once again we have a self-catering studio, this time with a view over palm trees to the Caribbean sea. With just 11 days left to eat, drink and be merry before Ash Wednesday, it is carnival time on Guadeloupe. Every night there are carnival parades featuring this year's entries from the local villages' and towns' carnival clubs. Ohé! Ohé! Moussaillons! C'est avec un plaisir certain que Frances, votre corsaire dévouée, saborde le blogue de Dominic. L’espace d’un instant, voguons ensemble sur le web. Résumons les péripéties des derniers jours. Comme Dominic a réussi à obtenir son jeudi et son vendredi de congé, nous avons planifié plusieurs sorties. Au commencement, avons largué les amarres et jeté les voiles afin de bourlinguer jusqu'au marché artisanal de Saint-Anne, histoire de vous rapporter quelques trésors. ;) En face de ce marché se trouve une plage splendide. Vous imaginez bien que nous avons fait une petite saucette pour combattre la chaleur dictatoriale. Par la suite, nous sommes retournées chez Lorry l’Antillais à Saint-Claude, une petite bourgade où trône le volcan de la Soufrière. Excursion du dimanche Central America Caribbean » Guadeloupe » Basse Terre By OxalieMay 20th 2007 Holà! Ce dimanche, nous sommes allé au festival de la banane. Sorbet à la banane, bananes sèches, bananes frites, farine de banane, vinaigre de banane...etc...etc...tout y était! Très cocasse. J'ai eu l'occasion de goûter à pleins de trucs. Menoum! Ensuite, nous sommes allés faire une randonné en forêt autour du Grand Étang. Curieusement, le paysage pouvait ressembler à certains paysages québécois. Montagnes vertes se rejoingnant en un étang. Hier, j’ai passé une première journée de stage comme les autres : la matinée à courir à gauche et à droite pour remplir de la paperasse administrative et l’après-midi à emplir des boîtes de tips. Oh joie. Le travail s’annonce un peu répétitif (fingerprinting AFLP) mais bon, ça va. Ils étaient bien surpris de voir que je comprenais tout et que j’avais déjà fait la plupart des manips….eh oui! Les étudiants de Sherbrooke sont bien formés! J’ai mangé à la cantine pour la première fois. Ils y servent de la nourriture créole. J’ai choisi de la dorade accompagnée de banane verte et d’une courge quelconque. L’autre plat disponible était des tripes….ouf. Je n’y étais pas prête.
