At the bus station in San Miguel, we were told by bus drivers the next bus to Perquin is at 10am so we have a few hours to kill then a young lady grabbed my arm and told me it was a lie and that in 10 minutes a bus will pull up, and indeed it happened, so we hopped on the very crowded bus, pedro sitting next to the pretty young lady who befriended us. The bus ride was long took about 3 hours to get there and quite slow on the way uphill, Joey was frustrated! Arriving in town we looked for the hostel Perquin Real but no one we asked can point us to the right direction so we decided to go where they said is another hostel, we followed the directions but ... read more

What a brutal travel day.. We woke up at 5AM today to catch our first bus to the town of La Esperanza. There was only one bus a day so we were there early to catch it.. but we could have slept in. The bus arrived at 5AM but didn't depart until after 5:30. The bus was a newer one, Japanese microbus and nice as I finally had enough legroom. The road turned out to be good for most of the way as well; it is paved almost all the way to San Juan now and for a good distance to La Esperanza. There was evil fog as we climbed the hills east of Gracias but this soon burned off as the sun rose. Great scenery, lots of pine forests and medium sized hills. We arrived ... read more

... or Gorilla War according to the museum! Tim Version: * Took a colectivo from Gotera to Perquin - my first one! Stayed in an average hostel. * Looked around town and the museum - a little disappointed and sad! The version I wish I didn´t have to write a big negatively, but its the only truthful way: Perquin! Famed Perquin! Or at least it is if you are heading to El Salvador. A hotbed and control point of the rebel geurillas of the FMLN, its where the museums in San Salvador and elsewhere tell you to go if you want to see the real thing! I´d also heard of many other travellers going there and coming back saying its well worth a visit! Well, it is, but my reasons I think are a bit different ... read more

Tim Version: * Traveled to Cacaopera along a bumpy as hell bus ride after a struggle with bus times in San Miguel. * Stayed at the Mayan Medicine Man´s place, swam in a beautiful pristine river, and found Eve to be truly loved by nature. The version that almost had to sleep in the streets of Cacaopera: Leaving San Miguel, we had a real struggle at the bus station. Everyone was pretty wasted from the night before, and asking bus times we kept getting wrong directions, wrong bus times, and nonexistent buses! It took us nearly 3 hours to catch a bus in the direction we wanted, a real struggle! It also revealed yet again the strange mentality here (Central America in general) about distances and times... There are tonnes of people working hard manual labor, ... read more

Tim Version: * Bussed to San Miguel with an overnighter in San Salvador, stayed first night in a prostitute hotel. * Moved 2 more times to different hotels, drank and watched the party start to crank for days, then slept through the big finale! The version that doesn´t regret but still can´t believe we slept through the best part: Leaving Tacuba, we headed back to San Salvador hoping to make the trip in a single day, but not in that much of a rush we arrived in San Salvador a bit late to make it to San Miguel, so headed instead for food and accomodation. When you really like a place, and really like who you´re traveling with, life takes on a much less rushed happier pace. Everyone we asked to San Miguel bus times gave ... read more

Tim version: * Crossed from Leon out of Nicaragua through Gualaupe, through Honduras, to San Miguel for the night... unfortunately ripped off a little in Honduras. * Crossed further to San Salvador to replace my dead music player and pick up some other stuff... El Salvador and its people, amazing! The version where I feel like writing in Spanglish as that is the only way I seem to be able to speak now!: So, time to leave Nicaragua! This country rocks, and there is so much to do especially the more off the beaten track you wish to go. Its amazing what you can get up to when safety and often legality is dismissed! You just need to use your head, because no matter how stupid something may be, if you want to do it, there ... read more

Hello again, I´m back. Currently having a day of rest after my birthday yesterday, so I guess now is a good time to polish off my tales of El Salvador. I believe when I left you last I was in Playa El Tunco, so let´s go from there. San Salvador From El Tunco, I headed to San Salvador, to see El Salvador play against Surinam in a world cup qualifier. I got a lift there with Jose, who owns the hostel I stayed at in El Tunco. It turns out he´s a bit of an ACDC fan, so we flew up the road blasting that out. Although I´m not quite sure he appreciated the irony of playing Highway to Hell on the way to one of the supposedly most dangerous cities in the world. I certainly ... read more

The decision to get up at 3:30 in the morning to jump on a bus for four hours is a decision you can only make the night before. So, that´s what I did--waiting in the muddy street at 4 a.m. listening to frogs and hearing the first chirps of birds while watching the stars slowly rotate their way across the sky and hearing the honking of the bread sellers as they started their daily rounds balancing the oversized baskets on their bicycles...waking up this early isn´t that rare in the campo. I joined up with Nohé and Leo and we waited for the bus to lumber over, filled with excited music and dance groups from Nueva Esperanza and La Canoa, and blasting reggaeton already--at 5:30 in the morning. All I wanted to do was sleep, but ... read more

When people go travelling by themselves, there's usually no shortage of opportunity to meet other travellers. But I've found that travelling in the eastern half of El Salvador, travelling by myself really means travelling by myself, I've gone entire days without seeing another gringo even so much as on the other side of the street. My last blog mainly covered the western half of El Salvador which seems to be more popularly backpacked, but in the eastern, less-travelled half it has felt like its really just been El Salvador and me. I mentioned last time that there'd be a major reduction in number of travellers here compared with Guatemala, but as I moved east across El Salvador it was less like reduction and more like termination! I checked into hotels in 3 towns in a row ... read more
