Update for 12/13-12/15/06 Paul and I left the Caicos Marina & Boatyard at 0945 on Wednday, 12/13. After breakfast and Mark’s great coffee, Libby and Mark’s bags were loaded into the pink-mobile (definitely NOT a Cadillac), and we had our hugs and good-byes with a few tears mixed in. We’re definitely missing our friends! Our leg across the Caicos Bank, took a bit of time with a vigilant watch for coral heads. The Turks Island Passage (or Columbus Passage) presented us with 5-8 ft seas, some 10-12 ft seas, and long rolling swells. In Grand Turks we anchored overnight next to South Dock, which was a bit rolly. Had a bit of trouble finding the customs & immigrations offices. As an aside, the Grand Turks produces mosquitoes the size of flies……Libby, Paul figures your presence would ... read more

Friends and Family, I didn't manage to get to a computer last week during my trip to the Dominican Republic so I've complied some photos to let you know how it all went. Cara and I wer lucky to have lots of sushine for our stay at the Casa Marina Reef Hotel in Sosua, near Peurto Plata. Due to my early injury body boarding and the subsequent 10 stitches (and I should mention that I recieved excellent medical assistance from a very competent doctor), we were mostly sitting back on the beach and soaking in the sunshine for the first couple days. We walked around Peurto Plata and handed out toys to the kids and got lost on our hike to Cabarette (which was proably to far to walk to anyway). Later in the week we ... read more

Well, this is the first entry. Right now Carrie and I are just wrapping up last minute details for our wedding/trip. Things like malaria pills, wedding documents, etc. Nothing real exciting, but fun none the less as it gets us that much closer... Till next time... read more

In February 2007 the 45th anniversary reunion of the US Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic (DR) will take place in Santo Domingo, DR. I was a volunteer from 1962-64 (Well Drillers). Previously I have sent emails and photos attached to tell folks about our travels. The TravelBlog seems to be much more effective. Earlier this year I worked with Google and other search tools to locate 20 of the surviving 23 guys originally in our group of 27 PCVs. Hopefully 5-8 of them will be at the reunion, some with wives or partners. Using TravelBlog I can tell the rest of the guys and my friends and family what happens. Additionally, I may go back to my old rural community in very small Punal, just south of the northern city of Santiago de los Siete ... read more

On a recent trip to Santo Domingo, we were traveling on a budget and decided to give Hotel Danae in gazcue a shot Hotel Danae Website . We had stayed there previously but they have since added 6 or 7 new rooms. Gazcue is a great place to stay in Santo Domingo as it is within walking distance to the Colonial Zone, the Malecon and many hotels, bars and restaurants. Hotel Danae is thinking about adding free WIFO for its guests which would make it even more of a no brainer to stay there. They have 2 employees that speak english and that can also answer any questions via email in English. We speak spanish well enough but it is hard to find hotels in this price range that has any english speaking employees, so that ... read more

Well, that's that then. Today is my last day in Santo Domingo. After so much planning and anticipation I can't believe this part of my trip is already over. How come 7 weeks at work doesn’t fly past so quickly?! It's been really hard work and I can’t say I’ve enjoyed every minute but it’s been a great experience and lots of fun. I’m surprised how attached I’ve become to the school and it was sad saying goodbye on Friday. Marisol, the school’s director, got all the kids into the playground and they gave us a big send-off with songs and speeches and presents. Some of the children made me cards, which I can’t understand because they’re all written in Spanish but I’m assured say nice things, and then I got mobbed to take photos of ... read more

Back to school last Monday only to find that the kids didn't go back until Tuesday. Damn! An early start for no reason. Still, Syma and I used the time to do some lesson planning and sort through the piles of paper and worksheets that had accumulated in the school office so it wasn't a completely wasted morning. The rest of the school week was pretty routine, i.e. blooming hard work. If nothing else on this trip, I've discovered on thing: I have no desire at all to be a teacher but I have total respect for anybody who is! The temperature in Santo Domingo has been steadily rising over the past week, as has the humidity, but this isn't surprising because the rainy season is just around the corner. Unfortunately, because the mozzies are rampant ... read more

It feels a bit fraudulent having a week's holiday when you´re volunteering, but Easter means the schools are closed and we have been forced to take a week off for what Dominicans call Semana Santa (literally, holy week). What a shame! To kill a bit of time we (that´s all eleven Santo Domingo-based volunteers) de-camped to a small town about two and a half hours east of SD called Bayahibe. It´s a tiny place, no more than 20 streets and a hundred or so houses and small hotels. The main purpose of the trip was to get a bit of sun and to take a trip out to Isla Saona, a small ´paradise´island just off the mainland. This was planned for Tuesday so after checking into our hotel on Monday lunchtime we fulfilled our first ambition ... read more
