Hello everyone! I am in the Dominican Republic, safe and sound, and very hot! I got here without any trouble! I was nervous because in the ISA pre-departure information it said that you should have a note from the doctor for prescriptions explaining the large amount, which I didn't get...but, it was NOT a problem at all. When we got to the DR, me and the four other girls on my flight, we paid for our tourist cards, then they took it right away and put it into a machine, and then we got our passports stamped, AWESOME, and then we waited for our luggage, and then we waited in a super long line to "go through customs," but to go through customs, we literally just handed them a sheet that we'd filled out on the ... read more

I just experienced my first Dominican weekend these past two days and it sure was an experience! It was great! Friday I went out to a bar with my American friends and then to a discoteca (a dancing club?). It was kind of stressful because we were a very large group and it was hard to handle what everyone wanted to do. It was full of lots of drama and I really didn't enjoy it so much. But dancing was fun! Saturday was the best night of the weekend though! I went out to a bar and a discoteca with the two daughters of my family and a few of their friends. It was so much fun! We danced and had lots of fun talking and meeting new people. Yesterday I registered for classes of which ... read more

The Dominican Republic has been absolutely amazing so far! It's gorgeous here! It's quite hot however and humid but the wind makes up for it as do the palm trees and delicious food. I met a few friends on the plane which was so relaxing knowing that I wasn't by myself! The other Americans in my group are so friendly! Plus the Dominicans here are so nice and friendly, I love it. They care a lot about relationships between friends and family so there are constantly people in my house and something is always going on whether it's a meal, talking, or just relaxing watching TV. My family is really affectionate and I couldn't have asked for a better one! They bought me a cake for my birthday which they covered in condensed milk...absolutely delicious. They ... read more

Okay I am going to try to wrap up the last leg of my trip in one sitting. So bare with me! Yes so we went to the unamazingly untraveled Southwest area of the country, it is a lot of desert, and feels unusually dry. The first day we went to a beautiful lake that this largest lake on the island. But I am forgetting the name at the moment. Before we went to the boat we entered an iguana ranch where I fed iguana fruit loops! They really enjoyed them and before I knew it, I had the entire ranch of the animales at my feet; about 20 or 25! Now, as you all might know, I am not really the type to interact with animals, I dont like any type of animal in fact. ... read more

So yes back to my trip to Samaná, this place was about tour hours away from Santiago where I currently live and was absolutely breathtaking. The water was aqua blue and the sand was incredibly white. And, the part I liked the most was that there weren’t any vendors walking down the beach trying to sell me necklaces, fruit and odd-looking shrimp. It was the epitome of a Caribbean beach. Samaná was a lovely little town, the type of town a North American couple might retire in. Truly tranquil and serene. The next week, I made a trip to the mountains with some Dominican friends as well as two friends from my program. The trip to the actual was unreal, we saw the sunset from the mountains, which was like something from a postcard. We ... read more

Hello One and All! I am so sorry this has been so long but the past couple weeks have been quite hectic, and without internet readily available for use, it makes it much harder. I also want to say that fotos will be up in due time, I have so many to show!! So I think that last time I wrote was mostly about my dona, which I have a new lil story about her. She asked me about a week ago if I could do her eyebrows and of course I enthusiastically agreed. So finally I had a spare hour or two so I told her to sit down and I would retrieve my trusty tweezers. I returned from my room and she was standing there eagerly with a small razor. Now this razor was ... read more

This past weekend was quite uneventful, did some exploration of the city and tried a vegetarian restaurant, but it was disgusting. One fourth of the way through my ventures here, I can say I am almost completely comfortable, most of the time. Walking through the busy streets of Santiago; cars honking, people yelling and busily chatting I think I have come to a point of contentment. I love that I can walk down the street and say hello to everyone and they will not give me weird look. I like that everyone says good morning or good evening, its truly refreshing. One part that I have been growing very sick of is the constant use of white rice in every dish. Everyday for lunch we have white rice, some type of beef and a vegetable medley. ... read more

The past two weeks have been full of school and homework! I like most of my classes but they are all with Americans, which means it will that much harder to make Dominican friends. I have made a few, but of course I would like to make many. The campus of the university is beautiful but SO spread out its takes forever to get to one building to the next. It feels so strange to be in a campus that only has around 11,000 students; it really feels like high school. Also every morning we come to school, by foot while almost all the locales are dropped off by their parents. This is another reason I feel that I am in a high school or even elementary. My classes: I have a basic Spanish class which ... read more

Today signifies the end of the first week of my stay in the DR. After orientation week I feel that my feet are starting to sink into this part of the world. There are people, places and things that I have not seen until this week and for that I am grateful. I would like to formally introduce the journal of me, Miss Natalie Moses to all of you; my family and friends. Here is a just a small window into the world I will be enduring for the next four months! This week started off late, as we departed the airport in Miami we were already fours behind schedule. So there was little orientation Sunday night, but the hotel was at the top of a mountain that overlooked the entire city of Santiago. From this ... read more

I made it! It was a rough trip to get here but I made it. The plane trip from O'Hare to San Juan, Puerto Rico was excellent, it didn't even feel like I was on a plane, no turbulence, absolutely perfect. Now, the plane ride from San Juan to Santiago was a different story. First I was shocked when I arrived because I was looking for the big terminals, nope not in my concourse! You have to take a bus to the plane and you just walk up the stairs to get in it. I had never seen this in person and the planes were sooo tiny! Well as I'm sitting there waiting all these flights kept being delayed, but my still said on. It was funny because one flight was delayed because the crew arrived ... read more
