Our next stop along the Caribbean chain was Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominica Republic which lies over 400 miles away and is close to 20 times bigger in land mass and population). This tiny island is the southernmost island in the Leewards and is an independent country. It is very green and lush, an unspoiled country filled with spectacular natural beauty, and has the most dramatic landscape of any Caribbean Island with mountains, valleys, gorges, and pinnacles. This often makes Dominica a favorite stop amongst many cruisers. However it is also not as developed as the other islands here in the Caribbean. It is written that if Christopher Columbus sailed to the islands today, Dominica would be the only one he would recognize. Now I don’t know about that, there were multiple cruise ... read more

After the full day of diving yesterday, followed up work and a late night in the crew bar, I was wiped today. I'd attempted to get a tour to the one site in Dominica I'm interested in still seeing, but that didn't work out. So today became a much needed day of rest where I slept nearly the whole day away. But I did get up and out to the crew deck to watch my final sail away from Dominica. Jody came up to join me. It was beautiful. A huge rainbow arched out of the city and across into the mountains. The camera just couldn't quite capture it fully. Watched the sun set over the ocean. The sky lit all different colours. Then after it had set, the scenery looked grey like the moors of ... read more

For 3 days the police close 4 roads in a square through Roseau. The town is small so this almost closes the place to traffic completely. The timetable then goes something like… Monday 4am to 9am - Juvey: Music and dancing to see the dawn come. Not one for us! We arrived in Roseau around 9 and saw the aftermath, this is the start of Carnival and it looks like the morning after a bad party. Everyone looks drunk. These people know how to enjoy themselves. There is a lull and we watch the parade preparing to move off. Make-shift bars are set up on the streets every 10 yards, we hold off and have our first drink at midday. Monday midday - Parade: Costumes, Kings, Queens and more music. Great atmosphere. The music comes from ... read more

So this is Christmas. We’re in Dominica today. I had nothing planned for a tour and most everything in the port is closed, but I’m off the ship. I wandered the streets, mostly quiet because everyone is home with family. I passed some houses, all with wreaths and garland and “Merry Christmas” on the doors. Through one window I could see a television playing a cartoon Christmas movie. During my wanderings, I spotted the steeples of a church above the buildings and felt drawn to it. It’s bells rang as I walked up towards it. I went in and sat for awhile. While it does not really feel like Christmas, because today is so unlike any other Christmas I’ve spent, I have an awareness of being away from those I love with they all gather together. ... read more

We’re in Dominica and I finally got off the ship to go and see some of the island. A group of us hired a taxi to create a tour. I went with my roommate Stephanie (who works as a theatre tech), Logan (another tech), Anna (social host) and Katia (classical trio musician). We went to Emerald Pool. Our driver took us along roads that twist up and around the mountains. The entire island is covered with incredible lush land. Every turn of the road offers another stunning view of valleys and mountains in shades of vibrant green. Perfect puffy clouds were above and the sun shone. The island is so untouched, undeveloped; it’s natural beauty is well preserved. Emerald Pool is located in a park that is one of the island’s two UNESCO sites. I’ve now ... read more

A small country with stunning nature and one huge boiling lake We travelled also before we joined TravelBlog. We have started to digitalise photos from those pre-TravelBlog trips and we are planning to write about maybe a handful of them. We will write when we have the time and time is usually scarce so these blog entries will be far in between. We have however written one now and it is about a small country in the Caribbean - Dominica. We guess we here in the beginning also need to say that we are not proud of the quality of the photos. They are dull because we didn't have digital cameras. We used film in 1999 and the colours have deteriorated over time. Also, it doesn't help that we are pretty lousy photographers. Let's begin by ... read more
