This is the first entry of few more entries to come soon, spent on the seas in the Caribbean. I board for a week the Club Med 2, the biggest five masts sail boat in the world. I will speak a lot more in the coming entries about the cruise experience. But one thing for sure, due to the people I met, this week ended up being a wonderful one. I had been on the Club Med 2 fifteen years ago to cruise Turkey and Greece. That was a pretty cool trip too, way prior to my time on Travelblog. I wanted to come back, but never found the opportunity. There are few islands I wanted to see in the Caribbean, but most of them are only great for a day or two, and going from ... read more

St Pierre – Roseau (Dominica) 36nm quite rolly in the anchorage last night, left early in the morning 0630, but had to pull up our anchor by hand as the anchor winch really isn't working anymore. Arrived Roseau and were welcomed by a very nice boat boy. We took up a mooring right out the front of the Anchorage Hotel. Walked into town to clear in and got a very good feeling about the town. There are lots of markets set up for the cruise ships that come in on a regular basis. Clearing in was easy. Just have to clear with customs, and not immigration. We weren't sure of that so trudged up to immigration and after a short wait, were confirmed that they didn't want to stamp our passports and we were in fact ... read more

The Duncan’s Day Out On Dominica (Cameron & Daddy) On Wednesday we went on a tour around the island. To split the cost we did the tour with a Dutch family, their names are Hene and Nadine. Our guide was called Craig. His taxi, like all the taxis in Dominica, is a minivan. We started heading to Emerald Pool, which was our first stop. The walk from the where the taxi stopped was about 15 minutes, through the jungle. As we arrived we could see that the waterfall was right next to the fresh water pool. I have to admit it was very cold. Titou Gorge was stop number two. The walk was about 10 minutes and, apparently, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was partly filmed there. We got changed and headed into the ... read more

Dominica was surprisingly enjoyable. Alexis, one of the PAYS organisation officials looked after us well, taking us up the Indian River and introducing us to Kenji who took us on a tour of the Island. We've been told repeatedly that if Christopher Columbus was to return to the Caribbean today, Dominica is the only island that he would recognise. The whole atmosphere of the place was very positive and we felt very settled very quickly here, staying much longer than the couple of days we thought we would. ... read more

So I've officially been in Dominica for 1 week! Wow! Better than a lot of other students. After talking to a couple of 2nd and 3rd semester students I found out that a lot of new students come to the island and within a few days decide to leave because it is a 3rd world country. I love the 3rd world country part of Dominica. The simple life. If you're intune with things here you "feel the vibe?", explained Gregory, my Indian River tour guide today. I'm feeling that vibe, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. It was a rough start getting here! Holy crap, Caribbean airlines are MISERABLE! My flight was last Thursday, it read Boston-->Charlotte-->San Juan-->Dominica. We get to San Juan late bc our flight was delayed. We hop on another flight ... read more

The old fortifications and buildings in the park continue to fascinate me. We walked up the ramp towards the fort then carried on straight on into the woods. There were hermit crabs and lizards everywhere. Descending to the north side of Cabrits you come across the surreal picture of nature swallowing up the old Douglas Bay Battery. Cannon are laying where they were left 150 years ago and Fricus trees extend their roots around and through the old stone walls. A fabulous experience every time we visit. On the way back we walked up to the old Commandants quarters and on to the restored fort. Fort Shirley has been carefully restored but doesn’t hold the fascination of the ruins in the jungle. The views over Prince Rupert Bay are great and there is a magnificent Mango ... read more

We decided to spend more time exploring Dominica but wanted to see the sights of the north end of the island, so we moved our boats up to Portsmouth. As we approached the anchorage we got a call on the vhf radio. Someone was hailing the “Boat entering Prince Rupert Bay” which is the anchorage we were heading to. So following proper radio etiquette we answered. We soon found out that it was just a local boat boy welcoming us to Portsmouth and letting us know that we can contact him if there is anything we need during our stay. We thought, well isn’t that nice. Then a few minutes later, just as we were getting ready to drop the anchor, we were approached by a couple of more boat boys. They also wanted to welcome ... read more
