Central America Caribbean » Curaçao August 31st 2006

We went to Curacao between 30Aug06 and 05Sep06 straight after the amazing trip to Aruba. Curacao looks similar to Amsterdam with all the colorful buildings! There is a floating market at Willemstad they sale fishes, fruit and vegetables as well! There are 2 must-visit beaches called: 1. Porto Marie - there is a small entrance fee, USD3 per person including 1 soft drink from the bar. But on the weekend is USD6 per person this also include 1 soft drink. This beautiful beach is perfect for snorkeling, swimming and diving. We actually bought our own snorkeling gear so we didn’t have to rent anything. On the first day, we snorkeled between 11am and 3pm from the far right hand-side of the beach to the far left hand-side of the beach. There are much less fishes ... read more

Ok, we're not in Curacao as the header says, we're actually in Bonaire which isn't listed on this thing.....but Curacao is only just across the water! So, it's been an eventful four days and lots of fun. Started out at 4am at Heathrow, where we queued for an hour at check-in, followed by over an hour at security. Lorna got the opportunity to strike a pose after looking dodgy enough to be asked to be a guinea pig for the new body scanning machine. Thankfully, this meant that she got to jump the queue and had time to buy fluids and food for the journey (you know how we both like our food!) The flight was delayed on the runway for an hour, but we still got to Amsterdam in loads of time. Next flight was ... read more

Having spent one last day snorkeling and diving, including our first night dive ever, we spent our last day in Curacao exploring the rest of the island. We started the day heading to the northeast portion of the island to the Ostrich and Game Farm. Although we didn't take the tour, it is the largest ostrich farm outside Africa. We did eat lunch there at the African restaurant Zambezi, which is an open-air restaurant covered by a thatch roof. The food was great! Paul had ostrich and I had a spicy pumpkin soup. After the Ostrich Farm, we spent most of our time in the capital city of Willemstad. Because it was the final day of Christmas, much of the city was closed to celebrate by shooting off hundreds of thousands of firecrackers (literally) and other ... read more

Today we decided to explore the island's dive sites via clown car. We purchased a "drive and dive" map of Curacao and then talked with the dive master at Habitat. She pointed us to some great dives! Our trusty friend Zoom (yes, Zoom) helped us load up on air, and we were on our way. ... read more

We spent this beautiful day diving. Although we don't have any underwater pictures, the scenery from the water is beautiful. We went on the Habitat dive boat and got a great view of Curacao's south-western coast. All the dive sites were within 30 minutes of Habitat. ... read more

After scheduling a dive for later in the afternoon, we went to explore the northern coast at National Park Shete Boka. It was about a 20 minute drive in our clown car through 2-lane unmarked roads. The scenery was beautiful, but arid. It was odd not seeing any fresh water - almost like being in the US Southwest. ... read more

We arrived in Curacao on December 25th. What a beautiful country - almost what I would imagine the Mediterranean to look like, not what I know most of the Carribean looks like. Christmas evening after arriving we went for a short snorkel off the dock at Habitat, the resort at which we stayed. Habitat is located just outside St. Willibrordus, on the south and western coast and to the west of Willemstad. After a brief snorkel, we dressed for Christmas drinks and dinner in the open air bar and dining area. Music was courtesy of a 3-piece steele drum band - what a Christmas day!... read more
