Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Cienfuegos February 14th 2010

Early this morning we got up and packed our bags. We were going to leave the capital and drive into the south where we would spend the next couple of days driving around the area. Our first stop was Guama, a marshland in the center of the country. We visited a crocodile farm and visited an island which showed how the native people lived in Cuba. In the afternoon we drove to the beautiful city of Cienfuegos, where we visited the innercity and the Palacio de Valle. When the sun set, we drove out of the city into the wilderness where our hotel was situated.... read more

On the 13th we got up very early in the morning and after a nice breakfast, a bus picked us up from our hotel. Today, after two days of big city, we wanted to go to the countryside. We drove to the far west of the country, to the Pinar del Rio Province. Our first stop was at the farm of a Tobacco farmer, were we not only saw how tobacco is grown and dried, but we also had the chance to look into a typical farmhouse and how the people lived there. It was quite interesting. Then we went ahead to the Vinales Valley where we stoped on a outlook to take some lovely photos. We drove a short distant to the Mural de la Prehistoria and after a nice long walk, we stoped at ... read more

It was always our big dream to go and visit Cuba. Since I study History and have a big interest in any kind of history, we decided that when we go, it should not be a short stay with lots of beach and hotel pool, we wanted to see the whole island, to learn about the history and culture and really see something. So after looking around and searching a lot, we settled for a 2 week trip all around the island. In Feb. 2010 we were off and after a long flight we finally arrived in Varadero. Our guide picked us up from the airport and with a bus we went all the way back to the capital Havana. The next day started very early. We had a huge walking tour around the innercity in ... read more

It’s challenging to describe Trinidad and not come across as an insensitive person but I guess the most effective way of stating them is to elaborate our experience as truthful as we can. After spending most of our time in all-inclusive areas, we set our sights on Trinidad, situated East of Varadero and Habana. We knew little of it nor have a clue what’s it known for. All we banked on is the idea that if it’s outside all-inclusive areas, we would hopefully get a better perspective of the real Cuba. As we drove along the paved and un-paved roads, loads of hitch hikers waited along. Our guide put it quite eloquently if I may say, “hitch hiking in Cuba is a national past time, almost comparable to Baseball”. He mentioned the wait can go long ... read more

After the hecticness of Habana I needed a few days to chill out. My couchsurfing friend David took me and another couchsurfing friend called David (a little confusing so I will refer to him as "German David") to visit his uncle in Pinar Del Rio. It is a region of Cuba to the West of Habana which is famous for growing tobacco, and also has beautiful countryside. David´s uncle has a farm just outside Pinar Del Rio town where he grows tobacco for sale to the government and subsistence crops. The land is owned by the government so in return for being allowed to farm rent free he has to grow for and then sell tobacco to the governement for rediculously low prices (despite being extremely valuable). The farm was fascinating: water was drawn from the ... read more

One goes to Cuba thinking your normal spanish will get you by, not! Cubans took spanish to a whole new level; with their own gestures and meanings a native spanish speaker will be impossible to understand. As we coast along the city of Habana, our guide was nice enough to teach me a few here and there. Sin Lio - which means No problem / everything's good or your regular O.K. was the only thing that stuck in my head. Everytime I came across a person asking how I was doing. I just say Sin Lio and we'll be smiling and laughing in the next few minutes. Habana by itself is a combination of your rustic, colonial and common blend of touristic spots. The thing that I wasn't prepared for; you basically/most oftenly have to pay ... read more

You might be suprised to know ( ;-) ) that what I have mostly been doing in Havana is partying. However, it really is the thing to do in Havana as it seems that what the place is all about. It is afterall the home of Salsa and Reggaeton. There is live music everywhere, cheap rum, and the clubs and bars have a terrific atmosphere. I have been taking salsa lessons most days that I have stayed in Havana, and that´s one of the reasons for staying so long. I really got the bug for it and wanted to crack the basics until I could free dance fairly fluidly. After 11 two hour lessons, I´ve pretty much got the basics but still need a lot of practice with keeping time when the music is fast and ... read more

There have been a few changes since the last time we visited Havana in 2005. The biggest is the amount of building restorations. There is still much work to be done of course, as many beautiful pieces of architecture appear to be on the verge of collapse - but the restorations that have taken place are magnificent, and the city looks so much better for it. To me, this is very pleasing, because the architecture is the biggest charm of Havana, and it's very important for it to be preserved. Other changes: a lot more people walking around in what appear to be designer clothing, but what are more likely knock-offs from China. Also, Chinese tourists and brand new Chinese made tour buses. Back in 2005, all the tour buses were old Europeans. The Chinese buses ... read more

The resort we stayed at, Atlantico, was located in Playas Estes, Santa Maria, just 20 minutes east of Havana on the way to Guanabo. We chose it because it had three free daily shuttles going into Havana every day, allowing us the enjoy the best of both Cuban worlds: city life and the beach. From our resort, we took a one day excursion to Vinales, Pinar del Rio and saw the magote mountains and the Cuevo del Indio. The caves were very cool, especially the boat ride in the river inside them. Somewhere around the Pinar del Rio/Vinales area, there is this huge mural on the side of a magote cliff done by a student of Diego Rivera many years ago. I expected better from a Rivera student, but it's still pretty neat just because it's ... read more
