I needed a reminder that today is Wednesday! We had plenty of time to say thank you to both Yadi the chef and Joaquin the all-around man, and do our packing up. Joaquin sent us off with a box full of goodies: plantains, huge avocados, and cassava roots.
We exchanged hugs and left by 11 am, Heather and David having left earlier to return the 2 rental cars. BTW we spent about $112 for that 3 day rental. The road that Carlos took was to the west, past the entrance to Ecotermales and Arenal Observatory and Mistoco Hanging Bridges. We circumnavigated the huge Lake Arenal, created by tectonic activity centuries ago, but expanded on purpose to create electricity (Carlos said it supplies 1/3 of the country’s needs), and wiping out two towns that were rebuilt elsewhere. We stopped for lunch in a simple soda in Tilaron – about $8 each for the “typical” meal of – yep, you guessed it – rice, black beans, mixed salad, beet/egg salad, and plainyains – with deliciously done tilapia for us. The kids wanted empanadas instead so they went to a different stall in the mini-foodcourt.
The owner of this new “Linda Visit
Green Soul” advised us to stop to buy essentials, so we did that in Tilaron as well: eggs, milk, etc. We started worrying (actually long before we got here) about the foolishness of finding accommodation so far out of the town of Monteverde – the taxi fare will be huge for the zip line event – but when we arrived, after 1.5 more hours of precipitous roads and potholes – we all oohed and ahhhed.
The place is gorgeous. Everyone gets their own bedroom. In fact, ours is “inside” – a large room with a useful little desk. Megan’s is also inside – in other words, off the central living room. We each have our own bathroom. The kitchen/dining room is also off the center room. Doors open to the wrap around balcony – and 3 bedrooms are accessed from that balcony – Andrew loves his little room with his own bathroom, and the couples each have a king plus twin upon which they can put their suitcases. The kitchen is very well supplied with gadgets, and Andrew’s already freezing some of the bananas and mangoes to make smoothies. In fact, when we arrived the local gentleman (father of
the owner?) handed us some bananas and passion fruit. It was raining during lunch, and then after a short walk around, it started raining again and hasn’t let up for over 3 hours. The temperature is lovely – I have a little vest on but with short sleeves and shorts. Andrew is wrapped in one of the blankets from the sofa. The family is playing with Heather’s virtual reality game now. It’s a fine place to relax and be family.
We are hoping for a let up in rain and some sun. The views and trails are supposed to be amazing. One new bird today – the WHITE-FRONTED PARROT. We are eager to see more new ones tomorrow. There are some enormous insectivores plants right off the balcony!!! Some are shut – wonder who wandered into them!!
The final photos are a few of this airbnb - our lovely bedroom - where we have 2 large windows out to the balcony - lovely sound of rain right now. The rest are quite self-explanatory.
