J'aimerais voir votre photo!... read more

Frissons garantis... On pouvait monter jusqu'en haut! Celui que j'ai vu est un des plus haut de ... read more

Monteverde is on the Pacific side of the Costa Rican continental divide; being close to the divide means constant howling trade winds coming in from the east. If moisture builds up on the Caribbean side, it eventually gets pushed up and rolls over the divide and engulfs Monteverde in fast moving cloud and mist – like today. If it’s mostly dry on the Caribbean side the skies will clear, and from Cabinas Vista Al Golfo the place where I’m staying, you can see clear down to the coast some 50km away. Yesterday, 3 of us ‘young’uns’ from Vista Al Golfo, hiked up vertically to Cerro Amigos the highest peak in the area (1842m), accompanied by various friendly dogs and coincidentally Marcus, the guy who runs all the TV/telecom broadcasting paraphernalia at the summit. Marcus was kind ... read more

Costa Rica the smallest of the Central American States after Belize and El Salvador has a population of around 3.6 million about the same as Panama . It seems to have moulded itself as a destination of choice for tourists particularly the Americans and offers wonderful beaches and active participation in its many public and private parks and nature reserves. It has shielded itself from world troubles with no army , no palaces of Government and has become wealthy from coffee production. Costa Rica is a well established democracy celebrating over 120 years and has one of the highest standards of living in Central America . Having said all of that San Jose the capital did not float my boat! There is a different feel from the laid back Panama no pretty old town ( every ... read more

R: Next stop is Costa Rica - a small rainforest filled nation sandwiched between Panama and Nicaragua. Our flight took us via El Salvador - and to fans of the band Athlete, yes I was humming the song all the way there. We had an initial night in San Jose which was pretty much completely taken up with standing in the immigration line and sitting in a traffic jam into the city. The next morning we headed out on the early bus to La Fortuna, a tiny town in the shadow of the Arenal volcano. The bus took about 4 hours and along the way we mused about whether it was good or bad for a public bus to be this full of tourists when many of the locals couldn't get a seat. We actually had ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! 2016 is here!! I can't believe a year goes by so quickly nowadays. It especially doesn't feel like it because it's usually freezing cold during my New Year but it's blazing hot here. I must say it's pretty cool having a hot New Year :P I woke up very early today because guess what...I'm going zip-lining today at Monteverde Cloud Forest, or Monteverde Bosque Nuboso!!! How's that for a start to a new year? I met with my USAC friends in front of the school around 6AM. We were able to watch the rest of the sunrise. It was beautiful. Something about being up in the early morning: the air is fresher and cool and everything is just more tranquil. A few of the students didn't wake up on time ... read more

After our final breakfast with Susanna, our Ometepe mama, at 5:15am we headed to the ferry and onward tot he border. We literally walked from Nicaragua to Costa Rica and what a difference a border line makes! This place is much more developed and has lush green mountains everywhere. It was also refreshing to have our first bit of rain in Central America and it's actually chilly enough for a jacket! We arrived at our hotel around 3 and booked a nightwalk in one of the rain forests. Kitted out from head to toe, torch in hand, we ventured into the unknown in the dark. Although we did not see a sloth or a viper we did see a honey bear, am owl, a wolf spider, a possum, fireflies, glow in the dark fungi and a ... read more

Away from the beach, into the mountains Having finished our time working at the conservation project, we moved on to Monteverde to start the second week of our trip, which was more of a holiday. As soon as we arrived, it was obvious that it was going to be cooler and wetter than the previous week. Monteverde sits on the Continental Divide at an altitude of about 1600 metres above sea level, and so is affected by weather fronts from both the Pacific and Caribbean sides of Costa Rica. In addition to visiting one of the local coffee plantations, the majority of people that come to Monteverde do so to visit the cloud forest in the nature reserves such as the Reserva Biologica Bosque Nuboso. In the cloud forest There are many different ways to see ... read more

This my first entry in my blog and thought it would be a good place to start. We went to Costa Rica last month and one of the things I wanted to accomplish was to zip line. I think Costa Rica is a good place to start if you have never zip lined. We chose, or I should say I chose ,because husband wasn't wild about doing it, Monteverde in the rain forest. All the different locals have zip lining to chose from, but after some research, we chose Sky Trek. We had a family of 4 from Halifaxs and 2 young ladies from Minnesota in our group. We had 2 extremely nice guides that were very reassuring and that made the experience more "comfortable". I'm not sure husband would agree, because he has a problem ... read more

From Boquete in Panama we headed for the border with Costa Rica. The crossing was relatively painless. We spent a night in San Jose before getting the early morning bus to Monteverde. Monteverde National Park is a cloud forest in Northern Costa Rica and is a popular destination for backpackers as well as the wealthy traveller. During our visit it was rainy season so our afternoons were often spent relaxing out of the rain. During our stay it was my birthday so I organised to go horse riding. My horse for the day was Darwin, he was really well behaved and generally did what I asked. Gary was riding Whiskey, he was rather lazy but still very well behaved. Darwin decided early on that he didn't want to be at the back so anytime that Gary ... read more
