25th MAY 2009 - TRAVEL TO MANUEL ANTONIO We headed away from Fortuna in the taxi. The lady that spoke to us was in the front, the driver was driving (obviously) and another guy was in the back with us. I was a little apprehensive about taxis after the story about the American girls getting robbed, but my fears heightened when the taxi stopped en route to pick two more guys up. I had such bad feeling that we were going to get robbed and so once again, I slyly transferred some money and my bank card to my bra. Better to be safe as we would not have had a prayer if they had tried to rob us. I was probably stupid to even worry about it as the lady and driver had seemed so ... read more

Chugging along northward. Entered and arrived in Costa Rica with no problems. San Jose was my first visit. Lame lame city. This place was boring. Not much to do and see here. The city itself isn't nice either. I only stayed here for two days. Two days too long! Cruised it down to the Pacific coast. I visited Manuel Antonio National Park in the town of Manuel Antonio. You know, I've heard stories of a lot of Americans being here in Costa Rica. No freakin' joke! They are EVERYWHERE! Anyway, I did get to meet some cool folks though, an Irishman, Canadians, and yes, Americans. Manuel Antonio has beautiful beaches. When visiting the park, I got to see monkeys, sloths, colorful crabs, and other cool looking animals. Oh yeah and a raccoon, who stole a banana ... read more

I made it to Manuel Antonio. What a long day yesterday was. The plane rides were fine and non-eventful. I had checked in two large bags and "only" had to pay $40 for the fee, so I was glad about that. I was glad that I didn't bring my third planned bag, so the decision saved me some money. When I arrived to San Jose, I was pleased to see that the airport was modern and very pretty. Touristy. Customs and immigration processing was efficient, and after all of that I met up with my host, Evelina. I was so happy to see her. We had a three hour drive back to Manuel Antonio, which gave us some time to talk and get to know each other. The drive back for me was fine since I ... read more

Costa Rica is beautiful! Our flight down on Jet Blue was at capacity - what recession! Because none of the streets have signs or numbers we thought it best to rent a GPS for our mini SUV. Unfortunately the GPS could not find our first destination. However, it was able to get us to the right neighborhood, but finding the hotel took some time and required us to ask for directions multiple times. Costa Ricans are not very specific when it comes to giving directions. They basically just point in one direction and insist we will find it. Eventually we did. If you have never been to San Jose, we would not reccommend spending any time there. It had lots of pollution, small one way streets, and not much to do. If you do find yourself ... read more

When planning the itinerary for the parents we had thought hard about whether to include Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s most visited reserve. Reports were that although a stunning strip of sand on the Pacific coast the rush to capitalise on the tourist dollar had rendered it rather characterless and overtaken by a few too many hotels. However, what we discovered on arrival, after finally emerging from our seemingly endless road though a mega farm of palm trees - used for palm oil, was a rather less developed scene than envisaged. There was of course a fairly hefty hotel presence but in the main most were tucked unassumingly back into the hill side with none close up to the beach. Plus even amongst the shops and bars behind the main tourist stretch of the beach there was ... read more

Looking across Manuel Antonio

After getting my bag late Monday morning I decided to go to Manuel Antonio the next morning. While waiting at the Coca Cola station I met some great Germans, Miriam and Martin, who were going to the same destination. The weather has been great, the food has been great, and the sights have been great. The first two days were spent at the beach and lounging around taking in the sights. Today we the Mangrove tour in hopes of seeing monkeys (which seem to be around most places), crocodiles and sloths. Our guide is a fun guy who gave the tour while taking sips from his whiskey and taking short naps on the longer stretches of water. We saw great things, but no crocs or sloths. We looked long and hard. This morning, while sitting around ... read more

Hello Everyone! First off, Happy New Year! I know we are late but we have been moving around quite a bit. We hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and that the New Year is starting off great. After we left Granada we took a very wavy ferry ride to Ometepe Island. An island formed by two volcanoes. We stayed there for 3 days. It was a pretty area with the volcanoes in the background. We did some hiking and relaxing by the lake. The largest lake in Central America. We left there on the 29th becuase we decided to go back to San Juan Del Sur for New Years Eve. The four days spent there were great. We did lots more surfing and hanging out at great beaches. For New Years Eve they had ... read more
