Steve - We saved the best until last. This for both of us was definately the highlight of Costa Rica. We had found Cabinos Pacific Edge on the internet and thought it would be nice to book in somewhere nice for the last few days even though it was slightly over budget. Although it looked nice on the website, we had no idea quite how nice. The views were stunning and despite seeing them everyday you could not get tired of them. The area was beautifully landscaped with butterflies and hummingbirds flying around the garden. We also had a brilliant cabin with a large balcony to spend our evenings on. It was Happy Days.
The best part of it all was the owners George and Susan, they were brilliant. Susan was from Hollywood and George was a proper Londoner, a bit of a geezer. They used to sail yachts together and have both been round the world a few times before setting up in Costa Rica. They had brought the land in 1991 of a local who had used it for farming. Since then they have built 4 cabins and a house for themselves as well as replanting trees and
plants. What made it so nice was you felt almost like you were guests in their home and George gave us some proper sausages to cook up one night along with lending us his own supply of HP Sauce and making us cups of tea. A taste of home! The cabin came with a kitchen which was great for us because although it sounds wierd we needed a break from eating out! So getting to cook our own meals was great and i especially enjoyed my morning fry-ups! If you don´t feel like cooking though Susan is more than happy to knock something up for you.
The only problem for us with the Cabins was that they are at the top of a steep hill and we had to get a taxi down to the beahc everyday which was a bit expensive but it was worth it. The beach is very popular and there are loads of places to stay along it. Its really good for surfing and pretty uncrowded once you were in because its such a long beach. We would head down to the beach in the morning for the sun before heading back at lunch tiem
Our Cabin
We had the biggest - 2 bedroom, a living room, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and balcony. All for 40 quid a night. Happy Days to enjoy the views before the evening rain came. Another problem if you could call it that were the morning wake up calls from the Howler Monkeys in the rainforest. Generally starting at about half five and its more like roaring then howling. I nearly fell out of my hammock the first time i heard them.
We were pretty sad to leave in the end, it was a great 3 days being up in the rainforest but so close to the beach. With a 5 hour journey over the mountains to look forward to we were cheered up when George gave us a thermos of tea with some biccies. You just can´t beat the English!
