Peninsula de Osa Information on Osa Peninsula Day 2: (continued) As we headed down the Sierpe River, we came out into Drake Bay. We headed over to the area with multiple resorts, a small town called Bahia Drake, or just Drake by the Ticos (locals). As our boat headed towards land, we noticed many small grass huts and buildings up on the hill. There are very few other resorts here, as it wasn't the easiest place to gain access. Our resort, Aguila de Osa Inn, or Bear Eagle, was an all inclusive resort with a bar, ping pong table, hammocks, delicious meals and appetizers, and had 2 included excursion activities. Our arrival was greeted with tropical fruits and ice blended drinks. We were given the layout of the resort and some information on our activities. A ... read more

Some new photos!! Hey everyone! I only have a few minutes and enough internet capacity to say I'm going to the next stop. I will be on an island for some time, maybe a week or two. Tourists come in to dive during the day, but only the park rangers and some volunteers (like me : ) can stay there. So there will be days filled of snorkeling in an amazing place. That's what I'll do next. Thanks for the messages, they make me very happy! I haven't forgotten anyone, and just because I don't write doesn't mean I don't miss anyone of you.. No photos this time either. Sorry.. Hasta luego! Helena ... read more

I promise that this story is not all bad, actually for the most part, it was an incredible couple of days. I had talked to an old friend named Derek about a week or two ago, he mentioned that he had some other friends coming from our hometown to come visit him, he lives in San Jose now. I left him a message on his cell phone, and he traced the number back to me, so we called each other a few times but never made any firm plans. I got done with a canopy tour on Thursday morning and was sitting at the bar at my work having a beer with the clients when the phone rang. It was Derek, and he said he was in the harbor, but I could not see his boat. ... read more

What a ridiculous adventure. I honestly thought it was going to be a fun day on the beach, just a simple 2 hour stroll to a great surf spot. Never have I been so wrong before. We left the house around 10:45, wearing tons of sunscreen and pretty stoked to be out on a cool trip. It was about 90 degrees when we left, and extremely humid, so much so that we had to walk in the waves most of the way just to stay cool. We hiked along the beach, wearing backpacks full of water, snacks, and cameras, and obviously, carrying surfboards. We walked about 6 kilometers, past all of the houses and roads, past the airstrip, then along a coconut plantation. When we arrived at the end of the beach, we had to decide ... read more

Woke up WAY too early this morning to start a long day of running errands. After a long run yesterday afternoon and surfing until dark, my whole body felt completely spent when I woke up this morning. My shoulders are finally getting used to paddling out every day, but my legs are killing me from the running. There is a really cool run from the house into town, a long gravel road (if you would call it that) that follows the bluffs overlooking the bay, crossing small streams teaming with caimen and discarded tires. Once you crest the hill, there is a picturesque view off from the hill looking into the bay and the Pacific beyond. It eventually drops onto the beach for the remainder of the path, roughly 3 kilometers each way. I usually stop ... read more

Just got done traveling for the past few days, decided that I have had enough of living in the middle of nowhere where it rains all of the time. I had a great time working on the river and getting in the water every day, but work slowed down tremendously and it was hard to find anything to do. One of the other guides that lived with me there in the cabin told me about a place down in the southern part of the country where he could get me some work, so I packed up all of my things and started the long adventure. Tuesday morning, Valentine´s Day, we got up super early and took a truck into Siquirres to catch the first bus. It was a 2 hour ride to San Jose, where we ... read more

I guess I have a little catching up to do, I haven't been to a computer in about five days. What a week! On Sunday, I got a taxi over to Juan Santamaria airport in San Jose, and waited for about an hour for my dad to get in. It was so awesome to see him again, and I know he loves coming down here. Hell, this is the second time in a month for him. We drove that night up and over the Cordillera Talamanca range, climbing over 10,000 feet before plunging back down onto the Pacific coast. We ended up in a cool little surf town called Dominical, where we settled in for the night and had a few cold ones to catch up with each other. The next morning, we hopped in the ... read more

Finally on the Osa Peninsula! Quite a trip to get here from Heredia, where we left on Monday morning at 10 am, only just making the bus to Palmar Norte. The absolutely amazing road (hardly any potholes would you believe it!) went straight through the mountains, into the clouds, and 6 hours later, we were in Palmar Norte. From here we decided to wait just over an hour for the bus that would take us to Sierpe, a little village, surrounded by millions and millions of palm trees, and has a slightly ¨swampy¨feel to it. I don´t mean that in a bad way, it´s definitely a very cute little place. We stayed in another great $5 dollar a night place, Hotel Margarita. We enquired about the watertaxi that would take us to Bahia Drake/Drake Bay the ... read more
