Our flight to Drake Bay was delayed by two hours so we read our books and watched the world cup out of the corner of our eyes. When we finally took off, we were loaded into a flamboyantly coloured propelar plane which was the first test of Amy's fear of heights. We were told that a "taxi" was picking us up at the "airport" when we arrived. The airport was actually a field and the taxi was actually a tractor. Yes, a tractor. The drivers did not speak a word of English and our Spanish did not allow us to say "I'm sorry, you want us to get in WHAT?". So we got in and crossed our fingers! Despite being in a tractor, all seemed fine until we approached a river and the driver kept going. ... read more

Drake, Corcovado Park. The most people working in the project are from Spain, this means a lot of swearing is involved. They are great though. When I arrived there was also a German boy, who was there already 2 months. He´s the one who has all the bad luck, but seriously all of it: He paid too much through an organisation who arranged a project for him. 2 Hours before he left the changed the destination though, which meant he doesn´t has the stuff with him which he needs, parents were not informed and contacted the police. Besides that he gets eaten alive by everything that stings or bites so his legs look like, well ehhrr shit. And he just left for the the hospital(hours away) because he got Dengue. This is a special little place, in the undiscovered wilderness of Costa Rica. It is remote, isolated and has little to no development, and therefore, very much off the beaten path. To get there, after several bus rides, you take a boat to a small town as there are no roads. This tiny boat, so full that the water was only inches below the sides, did ok until we came out of the river mouth and into the open ocean where there were enormous waves crashing over us. The driver was pretty amazing and managed to get us there in one piece, although all my belongings were soaked. We stayed in a little cabina on top of a hill where we had wicked views of the ocean and could watch whales breaching with their babies. Our ... read more

The border crossing between Panama and Costa Rica was surprisingly easy. We almost managed to miss both border controls. We understood this only when there were some confused questions at the Costa Rica side if we enter or leave the country. The whole place was a mess of arriving buses and trucks and stalls and merchandise everywhere. The area was a tax free zone which attracted a lot of people for all sorts of business. The Pan American highway was running through it with no obstacles and plenty of stalls and shops lined along it. We walked back over the border and found after some search the well hidden Panama departure counters. Two small windows were placed inside facing a concrete building. It was easy to miss. The lax control is very surprising since Costa Rica ... read more

Hola!! Ok, after receiving a couple "are you alive...??" messages, I decided it was probably time to update you all again! I have been keeping very busy with work and fun. In fact, i've worked enough extra hours that I have the entire week off that Chad is visiting (less than 2 weeks away!!!). I think we'll head north to the surfing town Dominical, so that I can get out of the bay for a few days. Very exciting! Other than work, I've been going on some of the tours, like snorkeling and visiting Corcovado, the BEAUTIFUL national park here. Also, I passed my scuba exam yesterday, and will hopefully start learning in water tomorrow, time permitting! Should be fun! I've also gone fishing a few times, and caught some pretty serious tuna...mmmm sashimi is amazing!! ... read more

Feliz Ano Nuevo!! Happy New Years Everyone!! Hope you all had a great night! I worked for a little while, but skipped out early to hit the disco with some girls from work. We danced and drank the night away (and tried to keep the creeps away!!) until midnight. It was a blast. There were bonfires all along the beach, and beautiful (and oh so loud) fireworks all night long. Sorry, no pictures, there was no way I was going to try to keep track of my camera in all the craziness. BUT, as much as I love paradise, I've realized that the holidays are always better spent with friends, fam, and Chad. Next time I'll have to bring you all along! Other than that, I've been reading a lot, walking the beach, starting to practice ... read more

Hola everyone!! I have officially moved to the most beautiful, quiet and peaceful community you could possibly imagine!! I flew into San Jose (the capital city, always a bit crazy) and caught a cab to a small hotel owned by Greg and Brian (the same people who own Jinetes, where I am working (but they don't really work here, they both live in the city and come visit once in a while to check in). It was a very nice room, although I was only there for a short time because first thing Sunday morning, I caught a TINY plane out to the Osa Peninsula, where I am staying. It was only about a 35 minute flight, but gave me a great view of the entire country. When we landed (on this tiny little dirt strip ... read more

Oh my god, I dont ever want to leave! It is so beautiful here! The Peninsula de Osa is just the best place! And I only have 2 months left!! I left Puerto Jimenez yesterday to come to Bahia Drake. Just needed to chill and sit in the sun for a bit. And guess what, it is actually very sunny and sooo hot! Brilliant! Got a bit of sunburn this morning though. I am stying in a cute place close to the water called Manolo or something. The owners built a small house next to theirs for guests. Its likea modern wood house, quite cool and I have got my own room, no Dorm! Woohoo! They even provide a mosquito net. towels and cleaned my room this morning. Well, tidied I should say, made a bit of ... read more

Once again this may be a long one, sorry but there is a lot to recap. I arrived in Costa Rica three days ahead of the rest of my family, because of course I wanted to make sure that everything was good to go. This is more or less how I spent the first day in Alejela, calling hotels along with the epic journey to San Jose to buy our bus tickets. This was a giant fiasco, but in a days time everything fell into place. With my well earned free day I visited the Volcano Canoa, which was interesting as you can actual walk to a look out and look into the active crater. I also was lucky to see the crater as it gets cloudy fast, but I checked it out, walked all the ... read more

We left San Jose on the 8.30am bus for Palmer Norte, about 5 1/2 hours journey away. We stopped for breaky at a wicked roadside restaurant that sold some very tasty food and (more importantly) had hummingbird feeders outside it’s windows which were attracting the little beauties by the dozens. We arrived early afternoon in Palmer Norte after a rather uneventful but pleasant ride and got a taxi to the nearby town of Sierpe which is where we’d get our boat to Bahia Drake the following day. Sierpe is pretty small with only a few hotels, a couple of restaurants, one convenience store but lots of tour operators. We had hoped to stay at the Hotel Oleaje Sereno as it was situated right next to the dock, but the Lonely Planet prices are a little ... read more
