After a short stay in the capital San Jose, which has nothing really to offer, we travel to the north-west of Costa Rica.

We did not visit this region in 2009.

We should go and check it out if we like it there. We are welcomed by a Swiss couple, Agi & Guido.

They have been living here ever since 1997 on a property of 68 ha of which 7 ha orange trees, with 17 horses, 33 cows and 2 dogs. The first 10 years they lived here without public electricity supply.

They rent 'cabañas' with a view on the river Sapoa close to La Cruz. We immediately notice a crocodile and 2 iguanas.

Already a good start, the next days we will see much more.

The food is delicious. Finally decent European cuisine with homemade tasty bread and other bakery. This is exactly what we have missed all the time.

It is the first time we have seen that many monkeys and other animals in one place.

They have been looking after a sloth for the past 9 months ever since it fell out of a tree and her mother abandoned her.

We go to the beach with a Swiss couple. A little further behind the rock we see Nicaragua.

Should we dare to swim all the way?

The ladies agree to have a horseback ride in the surrounding area of our stay, the Cabanas Canas Castilla.

Finally we stay here for a week. It is about time to go and explore Nicaragua.
