Happy Winter Solstice! I don't have time for a long entry -- we are in the foothills of Volcano Arenal (the most active volcano in the country, if not the continent) in the northwest part of Costa Rica and everything is great except for the rooster with jet-lag, the klyptomaniac toucans and the monkeys that pull Ari's hair. The Instituto Asis is beautiful, small private nature reserve that does a few different things -- mainly it cares for injured animals and does community environmental education. As a sideline, it also teaches Spanish. everyone is doing very well and Ari is really picking up a lot of new words. We are staying with a lady in her home a couple miles down the road. Luckily, her daughter lives across the road and has 3 little boys (6, ... read more

Hello, Hello! Today was great, again! We moved to a new hotel, and its situated on the most beautiful beach i have seen yet. The waves are consistent, but they ate my new sunglasses. My dad found this very amusing, and teased me about it for close to an hour. Then the waves ate his perscription glasses, mine were $20 his were $200! The jokes on him now. We also visited a school today, this was great! I brought a few art kits to give to the kids, and hope they enjoyed it. The children new more english than i new spanish. My new buddy jose was a smart young kid, and we joked about video games and his many girlfriends. Lastly I DID SOME BULLRIDING! Whats that you ask? Experience? None. Horese Riding? Twice. Dangerous? ... read more

Costa Rican Bullriding!

We awaken early and walk down to the town for what quickly becomes one of my favorite things on our trip to Costa Rica, the typical breakfast consisting of eggs, rice and beans. Karin also loves all the fresh fruit. After breakfast, we hop into our tiny economy car which we called the “Volkswagen Speck” to begin our drive to Arenal. Driving in Costa Rica is sort of like being in the Paris-Dakar Rally. There is a general path that you follow, but as near as I could tell there are no actual lanes and certainly no rules. Drivers will routinely pass you on both the left and right and the potholes are the size of craters. You must be fully prepared to go from 80kph to 10kph in about 5 seconds and then be ready ... read more
Tabacon Hot Springs

So uploading photos is a lot more difficult than i expected, so uploaded a couple on to community webshots because travel blog is way more difficult than i have the patience or energy for. So anywho, we´ll get back to where i left off yesterday. So after the hot springs, we went out to dinner in downtown fortuna which is the equivalent of about downtown brockport and had dinner. I should mention that we stopped at the local grocery store beforehand, also known as a supermercado, and bought possibly the greatest invention known to man. Rum and Coke in a can! After we had a few of those, we had some grub. I dined on arroz con carne en salsa, a taco, and Cas. Cas is basically lemonade on steroids. Its this tiny little exotic fruit ... read more

Word of the week: Bigote-- which means in spanish mustache. You may be asking yourself, Luke what does this have to do with anything... well, just for the record, Jeffery and myself are growing mustaches while we´re here in costa rica just for yucks. I´ll be posting pictures so you can see its stellar progression. I´m going to do things a little differently this time, my thoughts are all over the place because so much happened since the last time we all had a little chat chit, and this could get very sloppy ... so here it goes; my expenses for the weekend. Bus ride to San Jose+taxi to bus station+taxi back to other bust station+Bus ride back to desamporados=800 colones.... Well it all really started friday evening, when the girls decided that we were no ... read more

We (yup, he made it, too). We had a comedy of errors yesterday with me forgetting my wallet in kayla´s car (luckily, she came back) and moises not having a ticket to board the plane. that took one hour to solve. Believe me, i was going to make sure he got on that plane; however, now, i´m reconsidering. lets say its been nothing but hell!!!!!!! We stayed at a hostel last night and i must admit it was fairly organized and clean, but its been a long time since i´ve stayed in a hostel. well, the positive is that we were able to go out last night in San jose to have a few beers. We rented our car and that was an ordeal, but we finally made it out with a few loud decibals on ... read more

Hello friends from a somewhat more chilly La Fortuna... My final days in Delicias-Montezuma, a quick recap.... I wasn´t sure when exactly I would be leaving as I didn´t yet know where I would be heading, earliest leaving date possible was Friday (the 13th...) so my ¨goodbye dinner¨was on Thursday night. There were a couple of people there I had never met before (a regular night at our house then!) and the neighbours had prepared a great lasagna and two big bowls of salad. A great change from the rice and beans regular meals (don´t get me wrong I´m still enjoying those too). My final day at school on Friday seemed to be over in minutes. It was ¨Agriculture Day¨at the escuela and two people had come to the school to talk about the importance of ... read more

Today we awoke to a lovely view of the Arenal Volcano. It is really spectacular. Our guide informed us we are now one of the 3/10,000,000 people who have seen an active volcano. We boarded the bus at 8:00 and headed to our rafting adventure on the Sarapiqui River. After a brief orientation and lots of sunblock, we were off on a 4-hour cruise down the river. There wasn´t much whitewater, but the forest and wildlife were spectacular. We saw a monkey, a toucan and many other birds. Our river lunch included fresh pineapple, mangos and watermelon - delicious! Our trip back to Los Lagos included a stop in Muella where we saw IGUANAS! Lots of them, including the one in this picture. Wish you were here! ... read more
