On Saturday we had breakfast at a little restaurant in Monteverde and then headed to La Fortuna, another pueblo about 25 miles away where there is an active volcano called Volcan Arenal. Transportation is pretty interesting here as we are learning! In order to get to La Fortuna, we took a 'jeep-boat-jeep' taxi. Basically, since the roads between the 2 cities are pretty much piles of rocks and potholes, we road in this 'jeep' to get to a lake. There we hopped on a boat which took us across the lake. Then we got into another 'jeep' which brought us into La Fortuna. It took about 3 hours to do all this, even though it wasn't that far. The trip was so fun though. We were with a couple from California and another from Spain ... read more

Costa Rica 13th to 27th May 07 by Dan’s Mum Barbara Before meeting up with Dan,. I too didn’t see turtles in Tortuguero and wondered if the 14 year old looking pilot really knew how to fly… Anyway, great excitement on Friday 18th may when I took a 5 hour journey (which hugely improved my non existent Spanish), to meet Dan whom I hadn’t seen since January. I attended his Spanish certificate presentation (bit different from speech days) and we set off for our first night camping in the rainforest with poisonous green and black frogs, red frogs wearing blue jeans, tarantulas, toucans, army ants up your trousers and scorpions in the loo (pit)… fantastic… I love all this and was impressed that Dan too only wanted to squash the dengue fever mosquitoes - with ... read more

Hello from the 3 of us from Arenal, Costa Rica, Home of an active volcano! So Vince and I took the jeep-boat-jeep tour (across Lake Arenal) from Monteverde over to Arenal. We are staying in a little tourist town called La Fortuna. We picked up Jess from the airport yesterday. OK we just lost our internet connection so we are going to throw these up and tell you more later. Bye for now. Jenn... read more

Ginnie and Dan arrived on Saturday (after battling with a flight cancellation, etc). We celebrated Ginnie’s birthday with a belated Happy Birthday cake. Grayson was really excited to “help” her blow out the candles. We spent the night at the condo and started toward Lake Arenal the next morning. The drive to Lake Arenal was pretty uneventful. The roads were paved most of the way so it was a smooth ride. We did encounter one of the precarious bridges that made Dan and Ginnie shift in their seats a bit (hee-hee). We stopped for a snack at a soda we saw on the side of the road. Dan and Ginnie loved the salsa! The Arenal Lodge owns 2,000 acres. The brick driveway into the lodge was ~3/4 mile long. The lodge itself was rustic, but the ... read more

After Monte Verde we travelled to La Fortuna for volcan arenal another active volcano, we have seen some amazing pictures of this place so was lookng forward to it. On the way we saw yet more stunning scenery, a lot of it very similar to the greenery of New Zealand. We booked a tour to visit the volcano at night and all we saw was a glimpse of the lava at the bottom of the thick cloud, the peak was covered in thick cloud and no where as near impressive as the photos we have seen, just typical! Another example of it´s cloudy before you go it will most likely stay that way! One of the other local attractions close by is Baldi hot springs, yes you read correct Baldi, I await the emails slagging me ... read more

Hi Guys, Today is the first day we have access to the net, having stayed in the jungle with no phone TV internet or access to the outer world. Some of the Yankees were totally at loose ends without TV, but it meant we all went to bed at 9PM, to get up at 6 AM as required for the next day activity. Firstly, must tell you that Glen is the happiest guy alive down here. He loves tropical ( even damp, hot, rainy rain forest). He´s turned into an extrovert, blabbing away even about politics!!!! I am the one staying in the background, for a change. The weather is so changeable that you have to wear rain gear at times. Glen put his rain poncho ¨dork factor¨at 9.75, until some Americans complimented us on such ... read more

Today was the fabled "Christmas Present Biking Trip." We met our Bike Arenal guide, Hector (or maybe Edgar, we weren't sure), at the front desk at 8 am and picked up a couple of teenagers at the Montana de Fuego hotel. From there the four of us were driven out to the turnoff into Arenal National Park where we began our bike ride. The terrain was a little rough - mostly small hills with lots of rocks and bumps (and the trademark Costa Rican potholes). But the bikes were great and helped minimize the jolts. Everyone was patient with me as we travelled to El Castillo, and then on the river and back to our picnic spot. We enjoyed bananas, watermelon and wafers at the edge of Lake Arenal with a nice view of the (still) ... read more

We awoke early this morning to a steady amount of rain. Neither of us slept very well - our AC didn't work and it was hot, humid and (due to the wide open window) buggy. We both woke up with a fair amount of welts. We ran straight to the car to start our day only to discover that I had left the lights on (where are those annoying car warning sounds when you need them?!?!?!?!?) and the battery was dead. Deader than dead. Attempts at jumping the car failed, as no one had jumper cables except the hotel next door, but they were with their car a few hours out of town and not due to return anytime soon. Christmas morning car problems = bad timing. We tried pushing and starting it that way, but ... read more
