Pool at Jerry's house in West Bay
It was like bath water...no need for heater!!! Our trip began with an hour drive to Burlington Saturday afternoon. Our flight leaves at 5:45 am Sunday so we thought it best to get a hotel room close to the airport. Nice room with comfy king sized bed. We were both falling asleep watching TV at 4:30 pm so decided we’d better get an early dinner and picked the 99 Restaurant near the hotel. We sat at the bar, Freddie got a tropical drink made with their pineapple infused vodka, I had a yummy Manhattan….off to a great start. I got a text from my mother’s live-in aide agency…more aide drama…Fred said “shut your phone off”…I complied. After more cocktails and dinner we were waiting for our check, and nature called….no not in the way you usually think. Fred and I both had colds and he had to blow his nose. He did so into a napkin, then folded it up and put it on his empty plate. The guy sitting two seats away from Fred told the bar tender he should wipe down the bar because Fred just blew his nose and threw his napkin on his plate…said it was the most disgusting thing he’s ever seen. Fred told him he must not get around much. The guy said Fred ruined his dinner, couldn’t finish his prime rib. Fred said that was too bad because they have good food at this place and offered his apology to the bar tender. The guy called Fred “a disgusting f’n pig”, slammed a $20 on the bar and stormed out. Fred said that was the best birthday present ever!!!
Up at 3:15, out of the hotel at 4 am to drop car off at Thrifty Airport Parking. Their website said they open at 4, we got there…lights out, info on door said they open at 4:30. This was our first trip out of the Burlington Airport and I had no idea what to expect so we went to longterm parking at the airport. Got Fred’s big suitcase checked in…somehow he was under the 55 lb limit, security was a breeze…kept our shoes on…had coffee and pastry while waiting to board. As we’re walking down the plane aisle to our seats, Fred remembered he left his CPAP at the coffee shop…just great…he can’t leave the plane! Fortunately the co-piot retrieved the CPAP…crisis avoided! This was our first time flying Jet Blue…tons more leg room that other airlines, free snacks in regular snack sized bags, not those tiny little pouches. Fred’s brother Phil told him about a Jet Blue plane having a hard landing in the Bahamas yesterday…what’s the chance they could have an accident two days in a row??? Very bouncy ride and landing but we made it!
Waited in line for immigration at least 30 minutes…hot steamy…the worst part of the trip. Found Fred’s luggage, went through customs and got in touch with Jerry who met us outside. Jerry is Fred’s former boss at Copley Hospital and might once again be his boss here on Grand Cayman. We’re staying with him for 3 days before heading to Cayman Brac on Wed. Quick drive to car rental place….nobody there…guess we’re definitely on island time now. Got the car…a tiny Kia about the size of a SmartCar and now Fred has to remember to drive on the left side of the road. Driving to lunch, lots of roundabouts and signs saying “Give way”…that was news to Fred….yikes! Lunch at sports bar called “Legendz”…Jerry’s favorite for watching American football games….just like the TV show “Cheers”…everyone knew his name!!!
After lunch, drove to Jerry’s place in West Bay…more roundabouts…this time no close calls. We do have the cleanest windshield of any car on Grand Cayman. Every time Fred went to use the turn signal, he turned on the wipers…silly us…we laughed each time!
Fred couldn’t resist the lovely pool in Jerry’s back yard…the water was sooooo warm. We were pooped, a long day and were content to chill, watched Virginia vs Syracuse basketball game….# 1 rated Virginia lost in the final minutes. Early to bed.
