Costco Tour Since we booked through Costco we had a credit for a tour. We ended up on the best of Cayman tour this morning. Thought it would be good way to see some of the island too.
Rum Overload First stop was the rum cake factory, which sounds fantastic but was merely a small shop with no real tours of the bakery so I was disappointed. They did also try and ply you with rum. I tried the mango flavored one but stopped at the green apple one. Those "samples" are more like shots.
Governor's House Again disappointed as we just drove by and stooped out front. I guess I should've expected that when he lives there. The tour guide did tell us he was friendly and an athlete. The next governor that is coming is will be a woman, the first for the Cayman Islands.
Turtle Farm Next stop was the turtle farm and I got to hold a turtle! Well first we saw these HUGE turtles the have for breeding. Seriously, these things were huge and weighed between 250-300 lbs. I didn't get to hold one of those. They let you pick up the smaller
I love it!
At the turtle farm ones they have. The farm was created to help breed the green turtles and release them but they do also raise some for meat. It is illegal to capture or kill any turtles in the water so here I guess they try and control it. When the guide told us they have several local turtle dishes like turtle soup, turtle stew, fried turtle... all I could think of was Forest Gump and the shrimp dishes his friend listed off. They had some hatchlings in the hatchery and we saw one trying to make its way up to the top. It is a looong way up and it is slow going. I thought if I were buried in sand like that I would never make it.
To Hell and Back The next stop was a total tourist trap but I guess on a small 3 x 22 mi island you have to have some gimmick other than the sand. Although I think the sand and the stingray city are more than enough. There is a limestone formation they call Hell that everyone wants to see. It is interesting to look at but really not worth more than the 10 min
we spent there. You can send a postcard from Hell, get your passport stamped in Hell(we did neither) and basically hear every cheesy saying about Hell.
We're Divers-The North Wall: Roundabout Since we got our certification in Roatan last year we decided to do some diving here too. It was great. Of course I get anxious before we get in. It is still a little scary but once down there it is very cool. First dive was off the wall and it seriously drops down like 6000 feet. We went about 80. No pictures from that dive since the camera only good for 60 ft. We did see 2 turtles, a cool looking drummer fish (I think that is what it was called) and our guided speared a lion fish. I didn't see it because it was quickly eaten by a snapper. The lion fish are ruining all the reefs and the government has ok'ed the killing of this invasive species. Although quite beautiful they are very deadly and have no natural predators. I am not sure if killing them neutralizes the venom and then they can be eaten or what but these snapper seem to hang around divers
waiting for dinner.
We're Divers-Flamingo's Flamenco Dive #2 was not as deep and we took the camera. We got another turtle visit caught on video, a spiny lobster, another speared lionfish, a ray, and a huge sea fan.
Return to Sunshine Dinner was back at the Sunshine Grill where I had a burger and A had snapper sandwich. Delish.
