Edit Blog Post
Where to start, where to start… It’s been nearly a month since I’ve posted a blog and I’m still finding it hard to have an interesting posting. But here goes
It seems like every other week there is a tropical disturbance that we end up having to avoid, even last week we did a backwards cruise so that a storm would pass by us. This week is looking perfect, but next week might be yet another reroute. Because we did a backward cruise, we were in Nassau at a completely different time of day as we usually are. This meant that instead of showing up at 6 in the morning, having a drill, and then leaving at 2 pm. We arrived at 1pm and left that evening at 7. This allowed me to go to the Atlantis Resort. Best known by it’s waterslide that goes through a shark tank and where Jessica Alba works in the movie Into the Blue. It’s an incredible combination of hotel, aquarium, casino, waterpark, and beach resort. A regular daypass for someone walking off the street is $120. But as a crewmember you get a deal at $75, still rather pricey… Or you can skip
Atlantis
You can see the tube in the tank! the waterpark, and just walk around everywhere and go to the aquarium for only $16. Seeing as we only had a couple hours, it seemed like the best bet. It was an incredible location, and although crazy expensive it would be a great vacation.
My birthday was rather interesting, completely different than my 20th on the Independence, but good none the less. To make the entire week even better I happened to my Aunt and Grandmother onboard! This caused the whole week to be full of delicious dining room food. Being able to eat lobster was miles better from the food in the mess, and the change was well appreciated. When the chief officer found out it was my birthday he gave me the day off, I bargained my way into having 2 half days off instead. This allowed me to go ashore to some Mayan Ruins with the family during the afternoon of my birthday, and also allowed me to sleep in after what would end up to be a very long night. The night of my birthday we had the crew talent show in the theater, I never imagined how amazingly talented so many crewmembers were. Because
many people work very late, most crew activities start very late. The talent show was no different, and by the time it was over it was 2 in the morning. Add a couple hours in the crew bar and that half day off was very nice to have.
In the end of August we had a deck and engine department party. When I was on the Independence these took place on the forward mooring deck, but this isn’t the best venue on the Oasis. The party took place basically on the roof of the ship. The biggest exterior crew only location onboard! Throw in some live music, BBQ, a great bunch of people and a great night was had by all.
I’ve still got more than 2 months onboard, but it really feels like I’m headed home soon. This saturday a friend on mine that I worked with on the last ship, and went to school with signs on as 2nd officer. So I’m quite looking forward to that. As always emails, comments, and real mail is greatly appreciated!

Hi Garrett - Happy (legal-in-all-countries) birthday to you from the McDonald clan, Glad to hear you had a great time with grandma & auntie. Scott & I really enjoy reading your blogs, checking out the pictures and looking for new places to vacation. Do I need to re-mortgage the house for the Atlantis Resort? Keep up the great work and look forward to hearing more in the coming weeks!
