I started out in Tulum, just to hang out at the excellent Weary Traveler hostel and get a headstart on crossing the border to Belize the following morning. I ended up crossing with an Australian guy headed to the Cayes, and we ran into a few problems at the border. There should have been no problem -- we left Mexico legally and as the holders of US and UK passports we should have crossed just fine. Unfortunately the man in charge at our time of crossing chose to stop us simply in hopes of us offering to pay to let us into Belize. I refuse to do this, and when asking to speak to his boss he flipped out and among other things threatened to detain me. Honestly, it was hard not to laugh at first, ... read more

We arrived in Belize on 20th September after flying from Rio de Janeiro via Miami to Cancun. From there we jumped on a bus to Playa del Carmen where we spent a few lazy days by the beach. We were in Belize just in time for the the 25th Independence Day celebrations. Things were in full swing - music blaring from the speakers on the bus that we took to cross the border from Mexico and all the way into Belize City and when we arrived there was a real party atmosphere - music from an indeterminable amount of stereos and fireworks exploding overhead. Independence Day (21st September) in Belize comes in the wake of the partying for St George's Caye Day, on 10 September - and the parties just keep going. We spent our first ... read more

What we did find in Dangriga is superb banana cake, well worth the trip there just for that! Okay maybe a slight exaggeration. But plenty of this banana cake was pretty much all that sustained us today. Carlos Reyes has cornered the market for 'ferry' (well, boat) travel to Honduras, and does offer a good service, helping with immigration at both ports and even filling out our forms for us! The crossing was bumpy and 3 hours but pleasant enough. We then took an unexpected 8 hours to get from Puerto Cortes to La Ceiba which meant we had to stay the night there before catching the ferry to Utila in the morning. The first leg of this trip was in the back of a pickup truck, which was great fun until it started raining. ... read more

Our trip to Belize thus far hasn’t gone quite like I had thought it would go. That being said, it now dawns on me that we really didn’t have any firm plans in Belize other than meeting Matt and Melissa in Caye Caulker and enjoying some island life for a few days. And we did in fact accomplish both of those tasks. I guess I just didn’t reckon we’d have so much island life. But I’m getting ahead of myself. So I’ll take a step back and pick up where we left off way back in Playa del Carmen. We knew that the trip from Playa del Carmen to Caye Caulker would be a long haul. We even split it into two days, but geesh, did it seem like a lot of work! The first day ... read more

The First Border crossing - Mexico / Belize After an overnight bus to Chetumal (on the Mexico border) arriving at 6am, i made the mistake of sleeping through (until the doors of the bus opened and people started piling out). Mental note, set alarm for at 1 hour before ETA. Why? Well staggering off a bus 1/2 asleep, battling various people to get your luggage and then finding a ticket office for your next leg across the border (most buses do not do though crossings, unless you are with one of those boring organised tours) with only part of your body functioning at 100% (your legs) and some parts not seeming to function at all…. Is well not much fun. The "wake before you arrive" method worked really well for all future overnight trips.... Belize ... read more

Belize... official language; English... yey. No more ..gracias, por favor, hola, cervesa etc.. When we passed through the border, it was so exciting seeing all the signs in English.. and getting our Belize dollars, they even had old Lizzy on them. We went straight to Belize City and from there took a ferry to Caye Caulker.. one of the many Cayes in Belize.. and it was like paradise. A really chilled out island, with not many tourists, white sands, blue seas.. just beautiful. We spent our time chilling at ends of piers.. swimming, snorkeling.. and eating to local jerk chicken with rice n beans... We went snorkeling around the Caye, and were swimming with loads of Sting Rays, they were really close and was great to see (the guide was feeding them with sardines tho.. ). ... read more

We left Cancun after loading up the huge wagon that Clint and Royce (the guys from Texas of course) were driving down to Costa Rica. We stopped off after about 5 mins to fill up with petrol and then the car wouldn´t start...they explained that when they went to Cuba they left a light on so the battery was fairly tempramental...there´s me in the back wondering if this was such a good idea! After a quick jump start we were off, cruising down many a long, straight empty Mexican road with only the fierce speed bumps to keep us alert. We got to the Belize border with no problems, and went to the Immigration desk for the guy to ask why we had no exit stamp from Mexico. We´d managed to somehow drive straight past the ... read more

A few days in Cowboy country: Rancheros on horseback, bulls fording a fast flowing river, hummingbirds and fireflys - the scene around us at breakfast this morning; and a sample of life on a ranch by the river Mopan, the dividing line between Belize and Guatamala. And Mayan ruins all around us, thousand year old temples with vertiginous steps leading up and up into the sky from the dense tropical foliage - mysterious and mute, stones from long abandoned cities now populated by a different order of jungle dwellers - howler monkeys ( as Jake says, which sound uncannily like the dinosaurs in Jurassic park), wild turkeys, huge spiders.. certainly more exotic than the roaches and red ants who colonised our cabana last night on the ranch! Yesterday we crossed the border into Guatamala (once we had ... read more
