Saturday 14th Jan - Placencia, Belize
A barnstorming day of weather again in the region of 30 degrees and it felt like an opportune moment to do a spot of sunbathing. Unfortunately we'd brought along a bottle of out of date suncream with us from a well meaning but probably forgetful family member who'd forgotten that the cream donated had been sat at the back of the cupboard for the past 20 years or so. Now you might think its hard to purchase suncream in latin america, however it isn't in the big cities but as we regretfully found out it is in sleepy beach resorts. Placencia is an amazing place with a really nice laid back and rustic feel to it. There aren't any big modern monstrous hotels, generally just small family run guesthouses albeit you can still pay a lot of money for the best places. The town claims to have the narrowest main street in the world which at about 4 feet wide must be pretty close to the truth. It does however seem to have nearly every supermarket in the place run and owned by Chinese and what are they notorious for selling, crap! As we
are fairly young, naïve tourists we forgot this important fact and innocently went ahead and purchased a bottle of what we thought was new suncream. The net result being that about 3 hours later we'd been cooked like lobsters and looked just like them as well. Shortly after caking ourselves in any cream we could find to relieve the pain we marched on back to the Chinese supermarket and surprisingly he gave us a full refund along with the stock, perplexed look that he couldn't believe what had happened. We had a pretty good case considering we were wearing the evidence, although despite this I've little doubt he got it back on the shelf for the next unsuspecting punter.
Sunday 15th Jan - Placencia, Belize
Another hot day but this time was largely spent avoiding get burnt further. This evenings meal involved a slice of pizza from "fat boyz" with a timely bottle of root beer (must find somewhere at home that sells this) followed with a sandwich at "tipsy tuna".
Monday 16th Jan - Placencia, Belize
A wet night and morning and we were at a bit of a loose end. Aha, let's get the 2.30pm chicken bus to Dangriga. After arriving at 4.16pm we were back on the return bus to Placencia at 4.30pm with the less said about the place the better although we can now confirm what some of the tour guides say that there's not much to see in Dangriga. We had a great find in the evening in Dawns Grill n Go and enjoyed our 1st taste of lobster and shrimp on the trip.
Tuesday 17th Jan - Placencia, Belize
Yet another very wet night and morning but this time it brightened up in the afternoon presenting a good opportunity to top up the sun burn. We finally managed to polish off the noodles I'd been carrying around for 2 weeks since leaving Antigua, much to Stacies delight, which left a nice burning sensation in my belly.
Weds 18th Jan - Placencia, Belize
6 days on and writing this from a sweaty room in Granada, Nicaragua and the old grey cells are a little sketchy on what we did this day, our 5th in a row stowed up at our beachside hideaway and not really doing a lot. Ah, I think we sat on the beach again catching some rays whilst reading 100 years of solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marques. A highly recommended book which is a really good read, albeit a little odd in places. Back to Dawns Grill in the evening for yet another great meal.
Thursday 19th Jan - Placencia, Belize
Our last day on the beach and it seemed like a good idea to take a stroll along it having forgotten we attempted this on our 1st day and found it not to be a pleasant experience. The definition of madness? Anyway, 15 minutes later and we'd given up walking on the broken glass like sand granules and were retreating for the safety of the 4 foot wide concrete "sidewalk". Later in the day whilst sat in our deck chairs on the beach, enjoying merrily reading our books as the sun was about to set, we were pleasantly joined by a rather vocal, forcettoesque pitched voice, inhabitant of the former British North American colony with his Canadian wife. Although his entertainment value was pretty high, he liked the sound of his own voice a shade too much for most peoples liking. Before we managed to extricate ourselves we were joined by 2 younger septics who I'm delighted to say we successfully managed to offend without even really trying. We somehow managed to get the conversation onto our trip to the USA and got chatting about our friends over the ponds inability to both understand our accents and lack of effort in trying to understand it. I think they inferred that we were suggesting the general population is thick and lazy and that we were goading them. Now surely no one would ever suggest such a thing!
