In true Australian form, Tian and I both agreed that it would be completely respectable to start drinking at 5pm the night before our 4am tour to the Tikal Ruins. Seven hours later, a few games of giant jenga and by the looks of the photos on Tians phone - a period of time spent rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter, we decided that it was finally time for bed. The following morning we were squished into the back of a shuttle and I had just fallen back asleep to the rising sun when I heard Tian go “I think I am going to vomit”. In my sleepy haze it took me a little while to realize what she was saying - until I looked over and saw her cupping her mouth. I asked the driver to pull over and Tian clambered over everyone in front of us and said good morning to the grass on the side of the road.
When we finally got out to the ruins Tian was not the only one not feeling the best, and the 37 degree heat at seven in the morning did not help matters at all. I would
however like to point out that when you are travelling you do not get to just hide away if you are feeling like hell. After all, tours had been booked and you are wasting precious days. Therefore Tian and I laughed our way through the 4 hour tour, the burning hot sun and the distance we had to cover - including climbing many a steps that were half as steep as Tian was tall. We even managed to get a few jump shots in for good measure. The ruins were absolutely amazing and the best that I had seen so far. They had left the jungle between them natural so it was also stunning to look out from the top of one temple and see the others peering out from the top of the trees.
The following day we took another early shuttle and headed over the border to Belize. After 8 months of travelling I was finally back in an English speaking country. It was so strange to look around me and see everything written in English. It was particularly odd to have the “C” tap in the bathroom once again mean cold and not hot.
Due
to other people’s reports on how dull Belize City was, we headed straight to the ferry terminal and straight over to Caye Caulker which was about 45 minutes away from the mainland. Throughout the whole boat journey I was feeling really unwell which was quite confusing to me as I do not normally get seasick and I also had not drunk the night before. As we got off our ferry and started heading towards the hostel I started feeling increasingly unwell. As soon as we arrived I asked for the bathroom and for the first time in my journey was randomly ill. After we checked in and I started feeling betterTian and I headed out to lunch. As we were waiting for the food to be prepared we sat ourselves down on the outside tables in front of the ocean and started taking in the view. Suddenly I started feeling unwell again and headed straight to the bathrooms - unfortunately however I had not noticed the small fence in my path and time was running out. I started searching around in vain for another option but failed epically and before I knew it I had vomited all over the base
of a palm tree in the sand. The girls at the table next to me looked at me with absolute disgust and all I could do was hang my head in shame as the next round of florescent pink liquid came up and all over the sand - clearly never eating candy coated peanuts again. A few hours later when I was still feeling unwell Tian went out in search of a remedy and came back with Pepto Bismal - something that neither of us had seen before back in Australia. The contents of the bottle looked absolutely revolting, however Tian had been assured that it would work. As I poured the fluorescent pink, gluggly liquid into the measure I was very skeptical, however it worked magic and was our godsend for the rest of our travels.
The rest of our time in Caye Caulker was spent eating copious amounts of lobster, floating around in the ocean and swimming in the second largest barrier reef with rays and nurse sharks -which of course meant that for the 100 millionth time since January I was reminded of how much I missed my waterproof camera.
