So as the Canadian winter has decided to go on and on and on and on with no sign of Spring other than the date on the calendar it was high time we got out of the chilly climes for a week, and so it was back to Belize...debated hard on whether to return to Placencia (as we loved it there) or to try somewhere new, and at the 11th hour we decided on something new: Caye Caulker!
Just a week getaway to relax, get some sun, catch up on some reading and more importantly to get back to the Belikin beer and burritos, giddy up! It's a bit of a hike for one week but well worth it; again as in Placencia there were no big resorts, very laid back atmosphere, great food and the locals are awesome...and with narry a sign of snow it was perfect...
No big adventures, we did one snorkeling excursion out to the beautiful reef on a catamaran which was a lot of fun...saw a bunch of rays, sharks and a variety of other fish and coral topped off with a delicious lunch on board, fantastic...
Aside from that our daily routine
was generally thus: wake up and put on a pot of coffee in our cabana (Colinda Cabanas, highly recommended, bit pricier than some of the other joints but well maintained, clean, quiet and staff are awesome...10 minute hike to get to town but absolutely no big deal...), read for a good chunk of the morning, slowly get ourselves sorted and then maybe a stroll along the beach to the "downtown" area, stop for a pint or two and maybe lunch, back to the ranch for some more relaxing and maybe a dip in the water, cocktail hour, wander back for dinner and then close out the night back at the cabana...repeat...it was a tough week...
Caye Caulker itself is certainly more touristy than Placencia but nowhere near as bad as some of the other more popular Caribbean destinations, though we were fortunate that it didn't seem too busy when we were there as I'm sure if it was it would have been a different experience...a major plus is the lack of vehicles; beyond the odd construction truck the only ones allowed are golf carts, awesome actually...made for a pleasant walk everywhere we went as there was no fear of
Nurse Sharks behind our boat...
...nice of the crew to chum the waters before we jumped in! being run over by anything more substantial than a cart or bicycle...enjoyed it overall; lots of great spots to eat and have a pint, again the locals are warm and fun, will definitely be back someday...
Pros and cons to both places so not sure where we would go back to next time, leaning towards Placencia but again would not hesitate to return to Caulker...although our cab driver from the port extolled the virtues of San Ignacio so perhaps a final decision on "favourite spot" will need to be delayed a little bit longer...

Well done Canuck
Escaping the endless Canadian winter is a must! I didn’t get to Belize this winter but might go back to Caye Caulker someday.
