To Barbados

It's a tough life - but someone has to live it!

We're Leaving on a Jet Plane

Finally, we’ve managed to pack up and rent out the house, as well as (hopefully) tying up all our other UK bound affairs. Over a month was spent in ferrying our various belongings to locations scattered across the UK, from Shropshire to Derby, Canterbury to Yorkshire, and a couple of motherloads in Poole and London. The odds of us ever finding it all again in a couple of year’s time seem remote. Huge thanks to all those who offered storage. We promise one day to clear your Basements / Garages / Lofts.

We Are Going to Barbados

Finally got to take Jane off on honeymoon. After an early morning drop off at Gatwick (thanks again Trina), the Virgin flight to Barbados was a relatively pleasant and stress free experience (and yes we did get free socks..). Not much beats that awesome feeling of walking off the plane into tropical heat!

Barbados proved to be a lot more developed than I had expected - seriously touristy though, with prices equivalent (and sometimes more expensive than) what you would pay in London. Something feels slightly amiss when you are on a tropical island

Note the interesting fabled fat tourist wildlife in the background - not sure how much you want to zoom this one...
and all the watermelon and mangoes are imported…

We stayed 2 nights in Barbados. The first was in a guesthouse in the northwest suburbs of Bridgetown. That was nice, but kind of remote and the town itself was fairly inaccessible without a long taxi ride. A quick trip to the Barbados tourism association fixed all that. They are obviously gearing up for the cricket world cup, because despite being a couple of backpackers walking in and asking for somewhere cheap, we were treated like absolute royalty, taken out the back to an air conditioned office where a very helpful lady rang round all the places in our price bracket that were within easy reach of town and the airport. Second night was spent in a place in St Lawrence Gap, (the main tourist strip methinks) with a pool and a bar - all the essentials for the whole Brits Abroad look. Ashamed to say it, but it was perfect for me. We also wandered down to the local beach, and managed to catch a glimpse of the most common exotic creature in Barbados, being the obese Canadian tourist. The rarest of these was spotted in a perfect leopard print

Fast little critters - hard to catch on camera
one piece swimsuit - lurverly. Ultimately after 2 nights we decided our bank account could take no more of the sunshine and beaches, and booked our flights to Guyana.

Pasty
That'll be why you are so pasty then ... try taking your shirt off when you're sunbathing

Pastiness
indeed - sunbathing in shirt is not the way to tan, however does save me from embarrasing "red white guy on holiday" look...
