Lovely Bay is a prime location if you want to disconnect digitally from the world and sway with the sounds of gentle waves on the beach. Lovely Bay is a small island about 2 miles long. It is located in the northern region of Acklins with a shallow passage that separate itself from Crooked Island. Lovely Bay is connected to Acklins by a small land bridge. There is one primary school on Lovely Bay. Seeing the kids walk to school dressed up in their uniforms and saying good morning as you pass is a reminder of the genuine hospitality that exist on Family Islands such as Acklins. The population is about 75 people, with two bars and restaurants, one store, three churches, and currently one modest accommodation for lodging. William's Rent-A-Car is one of the few ... read more

I had the pleasure of touring Grey's Point Bonefish Inn. I have not stayed on this property as a guest yet. But one day I hope to lodge on this property. The business is owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Williamson and their family. The property has all-inclusive packages for those interested in bone/flat fishing and/or off shore/deepwater fishing. The rooms are very accommodating with A/C, wireless internet, and comfortable furnishings. In addition, meals are prepared on property at your request. Mr. Williamson was born and raised in Northern Acklins. He has a wealth of knowledge about the history of Acklins and the other surrounding islands. I hope to upload more detailed entries of Mr. Williamson and Grey's Point Bonefish Inn in the near future. ? For more information, please go to www.greyspointbonefish.com/. ... read more

This is a picture of one of the few gin houses still standing in Acklins. Gin houses are stone buildings that were constructed on high elevations of land across Acklins during the 1800's. Fires were lit inside the gin houses and smoke was use as a method of communicate for the Ackliners during this period of time. This form of communication was used to warn Ackliners in other settlements that the British Navy ships were patrolling the waters. For many years after emancipation, the British Navy would capture Black British men on Acklins and other Family Islands and force them to serve in the British Navy.... read more

Whenever I land in Acklins, Reno's Grill and Chill is one of the first places I always stop before checking into my room. Meals could take at least 30 minutes to prepare since the food is fresh and cooked to order. So be patient. The food is worth the wait. After I place my lunch or dinner order, I usually get a drink, sit and chill under the tree, and get my feet wet while scrolling along the Bight of Acklins. Reno's Grill and Chill is a take-away that offers many native dishes cooked fresh to order. The price is very reasonable. But the big bonus is the fresh seafood. I know I am in for a treat when I see Reno walking from the Bight with the fresh catch of the day. I usually run ... read more

It is a bittersweet day here on Abigail. We cast off from Bimini early this morning, leaving behind the turquoise, swimming pool waters and rustic charms of the Bahamas. As I write this, I am looking out our stern window and watching the islands fade away on the horizon. After more than three months “on the hook” (aka anchored) in the Bahamas, we spent the last week here at a marina. It was an adjustment being at a dock, one feels a little more “exposed”. There are so many more people around who can see in your windows or pop in for a visit; you have to think about actually being presentable – ha ha. But it was a nice change to be able to hop on and off the boat at whim and to meet ... read more

Well, after making great time from the Exumas to Bimini, our final stop in the Bahamas, we are now stuck here in paradise for likely a week (or more) as we wait for a good weather window to cross to Florida. I know, poor us, being stuck here! Our life on the boat is soooo hard – ha ha! After leaving Staniel Cay early on Wednesday, we arrived just as the sun set at Rose Island, east of Nassau. Initially, we had thought to stop at Normans Cay and then cross to Nassau area the following day, but the winds and waves were favourable, and it was still early, so we veered NW and headed across. Our anchorage at Rose Island had a strong surge which sent us rocking and rolling most of the night. Hence, ... read more

It is official! We have left George Town and are slowly making our way north. In a way, it seems surreal that we are finally back on the road (or more aptly, the open waters). George Town was a wonderful hideaway for the last three months and we are taking many fond memories of the area with us. We had so many opportunities to embrace new experiences and to make many new friends; some who we have now been traveling with for the past week. Last Wednesday, after some consultation with the weather forecast (although not always accurate), we headed out of the harbour and into the big blue. For several days prior, the winds had been playing it up again, but Monday and Tuesday were calmer and so we anticipated Wednesday to be a good ... read more

Great Stirrup Cay is a private island in the Bahamas exclusively owned and run by Norwegian Cruise Lines and used solely by their customers. NCL had done a large amount of renovation to the island, but then it was recently hit badly by a hurricane and most of the renovations destroyed. In the last six months, NCL have worked very hard to rebuild the facilities, but you can see it is still a notable work in progress. There was enough there for us though. It was a very pleasant place to visit. We were on the third tender out to the island from the ship and there were still not too many people there. We had a chance to have a relaxed swim, although the water was too cold to stay in too long. We saw ... read more

It is amazing how busy we seem to be and how quickly time has passed, considering we have no set schedule, no office hours, no deadlines, no appointments. Somehow, we still find ourselves in George Town, a little surprised at how long we have ended up spending here. It does not seem like so many weeks have gone by, and yet it has been almost 3 months!! While I enjoy adventuring, seeing new places and experiencing changes, there is something comforting about being in one place long enough to get to know a community and the little “tidbits” that you only learn with time. Like one of the only places to buy fish (surprisingly, you can’t just buy fish at the market here), is at the hair salon across from the liquor store, from a psychedelically ... read more

We recently passed our 6 month mark of this journey, and reflecting back, it is incredible what we have squeezed into 6 months! The other day, we were remarking how it seems like we have been on 3 different trips; each leg of this adventure has been so unique in it’s experiences. The trip through the great lakes and down the river system; cruising the east coast of Florida, across the Gulf of Mexico and into the Florida Keys, and then being here, in the Bahamas. This week, we had another big blow which lasted six days; unusual to go on that long, from what I am told. For days, we were hounded by high winds and rain, deterring us from venturing out too far. In fact, we spent two days without even stepping out on ... read more
