Without a doubt, this has been one windy winter in the Bahamas! We are currently waiting for weather to start north, and hopefully will start heading up the Exumas tomorrow, with a goal of getting back to St.Marys Georgia about the middle of April. We plan to leave the boat again this year in St.Marys, and spend the summer home in Guelph. In addition to it being windy, it has been cold. We’re not complaining as we know it’s been pretty harsh up north, and certainly the weather has been much more pleasant here. Since we last wrote, we have been hanging out in Georgetown. March is an exciting time to be in Georgetown . This year there were approximately 300 boats here by the time regatta started. When you look at the pictures attached, you’ll ... read more

Last year we left Georgetown prior to the beginning of the annual Regatta due to our needed saildrive repairs. This year we made sure that we stayed and experienced this truly unique cruising experience. The Georgetown Cruising Regatta has been going on for the past 29 years and attracts boats from all over the Bahamas and some come over from Florida strictly for this event. This year approximately 350 boats were in the harbor for the festivities. The second day started the competition for the many other events. Cameron entered the “Texas Hold’em Poker tournament and placed 3rd out of 86 players. The game did not end until 11:30 one evening with the minimum bet at $32,000. No he was not betting our retirement because each player received $1,500 in chips for the $8.00 buy in. ... read more

The Bahamas - Winter 2009 We arrived in Georgetown a week before our daughter Julie and her fiancé Dan were due to fly in. Everyone out cruising cautions to never set arrival deadlines but in order to enjoy visits from family and friends it is necessary to be in a certain place at a certain time. Luckily the weather cooperated and we were able to sail in before their arrival date. This extra week gave us a chance to catch up with other cruising friends we met last year in the Bahamas. There were already about 55 boats anchored in Georgetown harbor. We quickly settled into our normal routine of waking up at 06:30, turning on the single sideband radio and listening to the weather forecast given by Chris Parker at the Caribbean Weather Center. Then ... read more

The Bahamas - On To the Exumas We arrived in Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island, on the afternoon of Friday November 28th after a 25 hour sail from Vero Beach, Fl. The trip was mostly uneventful with light winds and calms. Not a bad way to make a Gulf Stream crossing. We checked into the Grand Bahama Yacht Club, a fancy marina in Lucaya. From there it is easy to clear Bahama Customs and Immigration. Next, we decided to spend a couple days there waiting out a predicted strong storm system which was to pass during the next two days. On Monday morning we left along with four other boats all headed south and east toward the Exumas. Our planned destination for the night was Great Harbor bay some 65 miles to the East. The weather prediction ... read more

Adventures on the high seas, pirates, long ocean passages, and long sandy beaches. Well…. we certainly have had our share of beaches, but if you’re hoping to hear of these other exciting things, sorry but we’ve been having too much fun for that. We have spent the whole winter in the Bahamas, and most of that time in the Exumas. We might have set a record having been fortunate enough to have 6 groups of company come to visit this year. Since our last blog, my sisters (Lynne and Marianne) visited, our granddaughter Ella and her parents Dawn and Paul, and our last company Mike and Jane Bondy just left yesterday. In addition to seeing our family and friends, they have been very generous in bringing us some of the supplies that are hard to get ... read more

We set sail for Georgetown, the southernmost port in the Exumas, and happened to arrive the week of the big cruising regatta. We couldn’t believe how many boats were anchored in the harbor, at least 400! But with the belief that there is always room for one more, we made our way in and set the hook. Now the cruising regatta is a week long event, with all kind of events like the coconut challenge, a pet parade, a scavenger hunt, a bake-off, golf and tennis and volleyball and bocce ball tournaments, and much, much more. Oh yeah… and 2 regattas, one around the island and one in the harbor. At night there are parties on the beach with music and more events like skit night and trivia night and a texas hold ‘em tournament. So ... read more
