The famous Pete's Pub on Little Harbor.
After the storms had passed and we got all the work done on the boat in Marsh Harbor we decided to go on down to the Berry Islands. The first leg of the journey is to get to the southern tip of the Abacos, Little Harbor. We anchored there for a few days while waiting for the sea to lay down so that we would have a safe passage between the Abacos and the Berry Islands. We anchored right off the beach and were able to swim ashore from the boat- very cool! And the best part of spending time at Little Harbor was our visit to Pete’s Pub.

Now this is an amazing story which has been written and published in the book Artist on his Island: A Study in Self-Reliance. Pete’s father, an artist and professor at Smith College, brought his wife and 3 sons to the Bahamas in 1951. He not only wanted to escape the “supra-national military-industrial-financial megamachine of modern society” but also wanted to find an island paradise where he could raise his family and live a simply life. The book talks about his struggles and successes as the entire family moves to Bahamas, builds

a boat, finds his island paradise, and develops Little Harbor into a homestead. It is truly an amazing story and gives us a new perspective of how different and easier it is to sail and live on a boat in the Bahamas now. Reading his book made us really appreciate our time at Little Harbor. There is still a foundry there that Pete’s father used to make his bronze sculptures which also serves as an art gallery that you can go into and explore. It was so great to see some of his original sculptures and drawings there. And Pete, who still lives on the island with his family, has opened up Pete’s Pub. It is a great beach bar, dogs are welcome and they serve a tasty rum punch. They also serve some of the best food you can find in any of the islands, fresh fish caught that day and prepared exquisitely. We spent all day there at Little Harbor and Pete’s Pub, having a great time.
