“Antigua--a different beach for every day of the year!” We just finished up with all of the Derby activities here in Louisville, Kentucky, and what an exciting week it was! With all of the air shows, fireworks celebrations, galas, parades, brunches, lunches, dinners and tastings, I am thrilled to sit still for a few moments and provide you with more awesome information on Antigua! Speaking of special events, April and May are very exciting times in Antigua as well! The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was held April 19-24th! Mark your calendar, because the 2008 Regatta will be held April 18th-23rd. What an event! The Regatta has maintained a steady growth since its 1988 birth with 7 boats. It now hosts between 50 and 60 yachts every year and enjoys a wonderful variety of competitors including ... read more

I forgot to mention from my previous blog that it is an 8 pound piece of cheese that people chase down a steep hill in Gloustechire as part of an age old tradition. Also, I updated some photos from Ceibal and Antigua. I wanted to mention that Ceibal was awesome. It was very adventurous because we had to arrange a private guide, arrival to and from the site and a pick up to Coban before leaving Flores. When we arrived the road comes to a river which separates two towns and a large ferry/barge is required to get to the other side. We boareded a small boat which took us up river for about one hour through the dense jungle and upon arriving to the Ceibal Ruins we were one of two small groups at the ... read more

Buenos Dias Amigos, We arrived in Antigua, Guatemala a few days ago and will stay here for one week. The town is loco! The streets are paved with cobblestone and there are no traffic lights. The cars, trucks and large school buses drive as fast as possible through the streets and I haven't seen one accident yet. The food here is really good mostly consisting of fresh fruit in the morning and for lunch(Mango, Watermelon, Pineapple, Grapefruit and Cantelope). The dorm I am staying in has five beds and my roommates are cool. I have heard some some of the craziest travel stories of my life including impalement, leeches, malaria, worms and chasing an pound piece of cheese down a steep hill. The town is scattered with church's and convents from the 1700's and they are ... read more

After spending a few days in Antigua, I am now on my way back to Flores. It has been a great couple of days. I hiked up the volcano Pacaya a few days ago. This consisted of a 2 hour gaunt up the mountain, about 1/2 of it at a 40 degree incline or greater. At the crater you get to breath in noxious fumes and marvel at smoke (the brochures showed lava). Though the liquid hot magma remained hidden, the view was quit spectacular from the top. I have met a lot of interesting people from Washington State, France, and Israel. Antigua is a great little town and most people are friendly. I do not look forward to the 7 hour bus ride back to Flores :(... read more
