The guides picked me up at my pension at 7am and took me to a fancy hotel at the top of the mountain to meet the two Scottish people who joined our half day trip to the Simiens. Melkom works in Addis for the UN, and his father came to travel with him to the North (and again a very cool one, who doesn't care about his age and enjoys LIFE). After 1hour bumpy ride we started our hike. Half day is definitely not enough to Simiens, I knew it, but after hearing my neighbours' experiences coming back from a 4days trip...uff...hopefully next time :) But anyways, at least we saw tinnish of the stunning landscape, some baboons, and Columbus monkeys, people living in the middle of nowhere...amazing. Back to Gondar my guide, Alex showed me ... read more

I woke up at 3 to catch the early morning bus -that leaves only once a day- at 5am from Meskel Square to start my trip to the North. I was a bit worried because I haven't been travelling alone for a while, but as nobody had the time, I had to take the risk and the chance. I don't know if they did it on purpose at the ticket office, but an other ferengie was sitting next to me (only two white people in the whole big bus), an adventurous 50ish French lady who travels around the world. Big respect for her. As she told me, she was a very shy youngster, but after being divorced she realized that she enjoys exploring the World, so since her 40s she visited almost every country in Asia, ... read more

Poor Susi didn't even talk to me for a day, well, - as I only woke up in the afternoon after a pretty drunk night out- for half a day, as I cancelled our trip to Debre Libanos at 6 in the morning in a text message. But, as always, not planning and going with the flow works out very well at the end :) We met Teddy and Teddy some weeks earlier at Bailamos. Typical Zsuzsi situation: I was bagging for one more last song from the DJ, and Teddy, his friend was just laughing at me...hope it was only because I asked for Beyoncé.... :D Anyways they drove us home, 13 people squeezed in a Land Cruiser... By coincidence we met again at the Goethe Institute at a very exciting photo exhibition. Young local ... read more

Lake Langano is amazing day e e e night. After breakfast we went back to the beach, which was not more than 15 meters :) The water is swimmable even though it looks pretty muddy and bloody, but when you start 'here comes the shark', 'let's teach Miki swim', or 'do the fears' kind of fun, you totally forget about it. I can not describe how beautiful day we had there. I will just write some words that tries to give the impression: 40 degrees, beer, blanket, Susi, juicy fresh sweet sweet mango, sandcastle, Miki, neighbours, chill, heat, sand, Sam, pelicans, nap, Wondy, waves, peace. Packing, leaving, sunburn, strada, sunset, Addis, Kera. It was very sad to get back home, felt like a teenager who fells in love at the school camp and never wants the ... read more

I still remember, when I was a child I was always begging my grandfather to tell again and again my favourite story. He just peacefully rolled his cigarette, lit it, deeply inhaled the smoke and in the random light of the pipe he said the following words. It was drought, big drought. We had no thing to eat, no thing to drink. We prayed for rain, but there was none, the sky gave no answer. But there He came. The Black King, every step of his was blessed. HIM, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Lion of Judah. From our fathers we knew there will be the day he comes to us, to free us, His Imperial Majesty, from the house of David, the offspring of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, ... read more

After breakfast we were heading to Awassa, leaving this beautiful city, Arba Minch behind. On the bumpy road again with Sami, Wondy, Miki, Susi and me, through banana plantation, mountains, Rift Valley, stream, villages, savannah, daylight, sunset, starshine. One of the DOT members, Engda lives in Sashamene, 17km from our destination, we called him to book a hotel for us in his hometown, as it turned out that every accomodation was fully booked in Awassa as it was celebrating it's 50th birthday . As soon as we arrived the car broke down in front of the hotel. It was a miracle anyways that this old Toyota Corolla survived the dusty, surfaced roads, crossing the stream and other extreme circumstances. After some hours of preparing the car, fixing the cables, waiting and freezing (in Shasamene it's only ... read more

Ready for the adventures we woke up and had breakfast at Tourist Restaurant, where we met our collegue, Sarah. She is from Arba Minch, so knew everything and everyone, thus we let her organize a boat trip to Lake Chamo. We had to drive 20minutes on road and 15 off road through a cotton field -that I haven't seen before so I was really surprised to find it here- to get to the "port", where some 3 motorboats were lying, there was one guy sleeping in a tent, others were cutting the trees with matchetes -at first I was not convinced about our safety, but at the end we ended up playing and posing with the weapons :) And than the boat trip...OMG...so peaceful and relaxing rolling on this giant lake while the sun strokes our ... read more

While seeking for breakfast on the roads of Arba Minch a youngster fell behind us. Typical question: where are you from, and I was ready for the typical reaction: silence (I haven't told my worst and on the other hand funniest story yet, happened in front of the Sheraton Hotel, a young beggar kid was following us and kept on asking where we were from, etc. I said I'm from Hungary and he started to laugh and said "ha ha, funny girl". This was the point where I lost my patience. I told him again that I'm Hungarian, then he was laughing even louder...pffff...I started to speak in Hungarian...he was: "good joke, funny girl"...I got even more furious, I pointed at the back cover of Lonely Planet and showed my country on this tiny world map, ... read more

7am: waking up, coffee, shower, tea, breakfast 9am: planned time to leave (we just have finished breakfast) 9:13 am: SMS from the workmates who have the car that they are on their way 10:30am: actual departure time 10:40am: stop at the supermarket to buy some food for the trip It is always nice to leave Addis for a while. The pollution of the air is so awful in the city that I could hear my lungs opening a bottle of campaign and hiphiphurraying in my body that they can breath fresh air again :) And of course the view...descending from 2500meters to 1600, from the dusty, crowded capital to a hilly, remote landscape...pure beauty. So we immediately said YES to the invitations of our workmates who have to work in Arba Minch (Forty Springs) for a ... read more

Rain...haven't met you for a while...I almost forget the sound of the raindrops clapping on the roof, the view of the trees bowing with the rhythm of the wind, the naughty scream of the kids playing in warm puddle, watching the defenceless dogs bearing their wet fur, people taking shelter, hurrying home in soggy jeans and shoes and thinking of - f#ck all my clothes are hanging out...- a cup of hot tea.
