MISSING May 22nd 2014

I never really planned to go to Jerusalem. It is not that I planned not to go, but I was just so caught up in travelling around Eastern Europe. However, as my friend moved to Jordan with an invitation for me to visit her, my boyfriend suggested that we also visit Israel. While not on my travel wish list, I will have to admit that as a historian Jerusalem fascinates me. I have spent years studying the cultural and political meeting between East and West and the concepts of identity formation and nationalism through this meeting. One might say that it is in my very DNA to appreciate the symbolism which Jerusalem holds for so many people, and to want to become better acquainted with it myself - though on a less symbolic and more touristy ... read more

MISSING May 21st 2014

Jerusalem is a dirty town which all Semitic religions have made holy... In it the united forces of the past are so strong that the city fails to have a present; its people with the rarest exceptions, are characterless as hotel servants, living on the crowd of visitors passing through.- T.E. Lawrence quoted in Scott Anderson's Lawrence in ArabiaHis words, though very undiplomatic, are just as befitting for 2014 as they were back in 1915 when Lawrence wrote them in a WW1 report to the British War Ministry on the situation in the Middle East. The old city, which lies within Suleiman's 500 year old walls, is a city which in many ways lives in the past rather than looking towards the future. Overcramped with souvenir shops selling Chinese produced religious symbols catering to Christians, Jews and ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv May 17th 2014

If you put two jews in a room you will end up with five opinions! An iPhone is a peace of plastic with an Israeli brain! It is our second day in Tel Aviv and we are starting it off with a tour of the White City... The White City Despite the terrible jokes of our guide, he provided us with a thorough description of how Tel Aviv began back in 1909. He showed us the architecture of Rothchild Blvd and the surrounding streets while describing the first decades of Tel Aviv existence. According to him, it is possible to walk down Rothchild Blvd and see as the city develops through the changing architecture. Except for the modern skyscrapers, which are from the last decade or so, the most dominant architectural styles of the area are the ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv May 17th 2014

Arriving in Tel Aviv We have arrived in Tel Aviv! After an extremely long and cold day in Vienna we were greeted by a night temperature of 19°C and a very clean and organised airport. But before writing about our amazing days in Tel Aviv, I'll add a few words about our journey from Austria. After a long and windy day in Vienna, we found ourselves finally boarding the flight to Tel Aviv, scheduled to land at 0:50. The boarding was in every aspect a different experience. The passengers were mainly Israeli and many of them Orthodox Jews with big black hats and beatiful facial hair. Everyone was carrying hand luggage that seemed to weigh several tonnes and getting everyone on board was a puzzle that I still don't know how was solved. The Israelis moved ... read more

MISSING May 16th 2014

On Saturday in Copenhagen Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. Denmark has won the contest 3 times, though a fourth time is worth mentioning. At the first Danish entry in 1957 the Danish song made a third place, and in Denmark it is common knowledge that the couple singing the beautiful song Skibet skal sejle i nat (The ship is sailing tonight) would have made first place if not the juries of the Catholic countries participating had found a great offence in the long kiss at the end. At the final on Saturday when Conchita won, I couldn't help myself laughing at the idea of how the juries of 1957 would have reacted to the 2014 winner or to Eurovision in general. Personally I am all in!But why mention this on travelblog. Well because ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway June 16th 2013

I come from a rainy country, where we for the large part survive the rainy days with stories of how it rains even more on the British Isles. You might imagine my surprise when I arrived in Galway and Connemara - the wettest place in Ireland - and found it warm, sunny and with a clear blue sky. However, it didn't take me long to realise that the local population was just as surprised with the clear blue sky. Quite a few have commented on my luck in coming to Galway, at a time when the weather is so amazing and far from the rainy grey that normally clouds Connemara and the Burren. There have been two reasons for my visit to Galway. Firstly, it has been my dream to explore Western Ireland for some years ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin June 2nd 2013

In my mind, Dublin has always been connected to The Commitments and U2. I have this idea of working class brick houses and old men and pale ginger women in pubs discussing over a pint of Guinness. Dublin, in my imagination, is, as Liverpool and Manchester, the ultimate working class city, with a rough look of the 80s and dirty side-streets. As someone who seeks the charm in what many people call ordinary and boring, I have had Dublin on the top of my list for quite some time. Therefore, when I met Dónal in Brussels in 2011, I knew I had to use him as my gateway to the green island. Dónal is an Irish European. His heart - as mine - beats for Europe and we seem inclined to share a lot of hopes ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris April 18th 2013

In Denmark, at least in some places, we refer to our family as the hunchbacks (pukkelryggede). For some reason comparing our loved ones to Quasimodo is a form of endearment. As such, you often hear someone say that they are going for dinner at the hunchbacks or for a wedding with the rest of the hunchbacked family. (I have to emphasise here that no one in my family is actually hunchbacked, and neither is kyphosis a common trait amongst Danes - at least not after we left behind our heavy Viking swords). However, you will allow me to find it particularly funny that I in April visited Notre Dame de Paris with the hunchbacks - I imagine the intro music to the Disney Classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to play in the background by now. ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 20th 2012

Behind Les Grands Magasins Dufayel, a street leads towards the Montmartre hill. At the end it is possible to take two ways up to the top. The smaller of the two is a path which takes you through lots of green, yet also lots of faul smells of urine. The larger and more touristic walk to the top are the stairs which spread out infront of the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. Though the stench of urine is far from as bad here, the bottom of the stairs are occupied by extremely aggresive young guys who force tourists into buying knitted bracelets. However, with Luis and the rest of the couchsurfers our group of weary globetrotters and backpackers seemed to scare off even the most aggresive of guys, and while many couples on a romantic weekend had to ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 20th 2012

'Hi, I'm Oscar from Barcelona, who are you?' 'I'm Erika from Finland' 'I'm Gosia from Poland' awkward silence... 'So what are you guys doing in France? Are you here for the meeting? Travelling?' And so on and so on. Having been abroad as much as I have and having encountered as many people through my travels, I have become quite used to the traditional greetings of backpackers and globetrotters. Thus, arriving at two o'clock at Chateau Rouge Metro station, finding 50 other travellers standing around in a loose formation didn't really freak me out. However, it always is a bit intimidating to get yourself out there and meet and greet new people. The reason that we all showed up at Chateau Rouge was because we had received a general invitation through the activity calendar of the ... read more
