First and foremost, I would like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I realize that I have been slacking. I´ve been caught up in this still sometimes foreign world that amazes, amuses, frustrates, and enlightens me. This blog, which has been taken straight from the pages of my newly aquired llama journal (thanks J!), will have to be short as I am headed on a three day jeep trek through the salt flats in approximately T minus one hour. First a preface I´ve just come off of a seven hour train ride through the snow. Every single adult in my cabin has at least two children, and they all cry intermittently during the ride. The seats recline, thank god, but they fall short about a foot leaving only a backing for my shoulders down. I ... read more

The Bus Ride I made it. I´m exhuasted. 8 hours on a bus. 8 hours repeating over and over and over: (eyes open) "have faith...oh shit!", (eyes closed), "havefaithhavefaithhavefaithhavefaith", (eyes open), "OH SHIT!" There´s nothing more exhilarating and terrifying than speeding (to the point where the bus feels as though it may actually tip over) around the bends and curves of the Andes Mountains. And believe me, it was a looooooong way down. In all the moments where a driver (who actually wanted to keep living) would slow down, this driver accelerated. But luckily for me I was able to stare at a depiction of Jesus Christ the entire ride. (Did you catch the sarcasm in that last sentence?). Now just to clarify if you can not picture it already. The bus is a double decker. ... read more

" Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create." It is the norm for both males and females to live in the house and under the rules of their parents until they marry. The phrases, "Don't worry", "It's okay!", and "No problem!" are frequently used; especially when talking to stressed out westerners. Small towns are exactly the same here as they are back home. Everything begins later and ends later. Shops open at ten a.m. & discotechas don't get packed until close to one a.m. Rushing is not an option, unless you are on a bus. You are treated as family from the minute you are introduced to somone. Within days of coming to Huanchaco I felt like ... read more

Today officially marks my second week here in Peru, my first week here in the "little fisherman's town" known as Huanchaco. I wish I could fully portray how simultaneously grounding and surreal this experience has been thus far. I've been stripped. It began on the plane and has steadily continued to stream off of me like dirt and oil washes off in a warm, soapy bath. It's the responsibility, the stress, the expectations. It's judgement, superiority and inferiority. It's the conversations about haves and have nots, career moves..."what are you going to do with the rest of your life?" It's the rules, the restrictions, and the precautionary guidelines. It's everything that creates the illusion of comfort and safety. It's everything that makes me feel like a foreigner in a my own land when I don't stay ... read more

I landed in Lima what seems like weeks ago, but in fact has been a little under 48 hours. As they say, home is where the heart is, and right now my heart is completely immersed in this experience. So, what have I seen? What have I been doing? What has Miraflores offered me and what have I allowed it to show me? In this time I have bargained with money-changers on the street, I have toured a pyramid in the midst of the city, I have made friends with my dorm-mates, and sat for hours discussing life by the window in my hostel. I have watched Peruvian children play, I have eaten the local foods, discovered Skype, attempted broken spanish, nuzzled up in my sleeping bag, and walked to the ocean. I wish I could ... read more

I begin this journey by giving thanks; I truly have a wonderful and blessed life. Inspirations: my support system The Alchemist fear courage imagination eastern philosophy and curiosity Many of you know that I've been planning and saving for this experience for quite some time. At first I planned and prepared as a chance for me to give my skills and abilities to those who were in need of it. It then grew into an opportunity to see a different part of the world and immerse myself in a new culture. Slowly, over time I have begun to realize that this isn't solely a "trip" or a volunteering experience, this is the path that my life is flowing towards. It's hard to grow up in our society and not feel that omni-present pressure to graduate college, ... read more
