Captain and Stoker

These are our adventures in Costa Rica

Class this AM. It went well. I think I am finally getting my Spanish back. Left for Monte Verde at about 1PM. We are in a minivan and have a guide. There are nine of us including Carlos. As we pulled away from IPED, it was starting to sprinkle. The traffic was awful until we got past the San Jose airport. Stop and go, bumper to bumper, single lane each direction. Once we got out of town we could move at a blazing 80KMPH. That was pretty satisfying. Carlos was handling the traffic pretty well as we went along. However, I was getting a bit concerned about some of the more adventurous Ticos who passed us on the right; taking the shoulder and blowing past us at a much faster clip. We went along CR1 until ... read more

Something which has come to my attention over the past few days is that there is a very active and vocal environmental movement in CR. Since we are going to Monte Verde tomorrow, I thought that I could check out a few things on Google and La Nacion. The story started about six years ago when a Canadian mining company obtained a concession from the CR government to begin an open pit mine in the north of the country. The location of the mine is about two miles from the San Juan River. The river is the international border between Nicaragua and CR. The Mining company proposes to use a type of cyanide extraction process to bring the gold out of the raw ore. Environmentalists and the Nicaraguan government has objected to the mine based on ... read more

Class was in the morning today. Walked in the rain to get there. Today is also our Host's birthday. We were invited and included in the celebration. We saw her father: Don Franklin. It was really great to see him again. He is still active and is 85. He played chess with me during our last visit to CR. This time he won't be able to push pawns with me, as he is scheduled to leave for Managua in a few days. Anyway, while everyone was in the living room, he was in the kitchen with yours truly and another student giving a spanish lesson. The cake was excellent, we ate ourselves into a food coma. A tough day. I am still trying to get my head around the Spanish. Because of the schedule and skill levels, I am in what amounts to a private lesson. It amounts to an almost four hour one-on-one session with a teacher. You are it, and you have her full attention...you must answer every question she asks. After the end of the day today, I was ready to quit. It rained again today. I happened to be walking to class today and took this picture. The school is in an old match factory.... read more

This was the first day of class at IPED. Of course my head exploded about half way through the session. Consequences of not practicing my language skills in the two years since my last visit. Maritza, my previous teacher is working with other students this time. My teacher is someone else this time around. Initially I started out with one other person in the class with me, but she got moved to a more advanced group, so I am by myself again as a beginner. So after about three hours of trying to get my brain cells around what was taking place, it was over. David and Zeita were sympathetic and told me to be patient and just let it flow. The excellent thing about this particular program is it includes some very intensive instruction, but ... read more

Rain again this afternoon. Went on the tour of Cafe Britt. Great coffee. Had a wonderful time. The staff there was cordial and very friendly. The tour is quite educational. Went to the INBioparque afterward and spent two hours prowling around the gardens with a guide. This park has examples of the biodiversity of Costa Rica, it privately funded, and is a reclaimed coffee finca. Got some interesting pictures of the animals. Will post pictures as soon as I can get them downloaded off the camera.... read more

Totally a decadent morning. Woke up at eight. Breakfast of fruit and coffee: papaya, banana, melon, pineapple. All fresh and all from CR. Coffee from Cafe Britt; made in a choriador; a blast to the tastebuds. Walked down to the plaza central to people watch. Hung around until it started raining (About Noon). This one came in with the sprinkles and then it opened up with the downpour. We weren't prepared for this; left our umbrellas back at the casa. So we hailed a cab. Lunch and a nap. I could get used to this. Have pictures which I will upload as soon as I can. It has pretty much been a wet afternoon. Tomorrow we go to a coffee finca for a tour. ... read more

Finally! Arrived about 8PM. Picked up by friends. Tired from the flight. Though we did it a bit more thoughtfully this time. This trip we flew through Dallas and had a three hour lay-over there. Whis broke up the flight a bit. Much better than trying to take the whole seven hours all at once. It's been raining. Not sure whether this is something on going or just for a few days. Anyway, I am beat. I need to take out the contact lenses and give my feet a rest. More later. Pura Vida!... read more

Sunday Arrived in San Francisco about 3:30 PM yesterday afternoon. Home by 6:30. Cleaned up and unpacked this morning. Took nearly 1,000 photos of processions and other celebrations. The weather was warm and the food was great. Now comes the backfilling of the entries in this blog that I couldn't post while we were there. We are planning another trip sometime in October.
