After rising early this morning and barely recognizing ourselves in the mirror (we look sooooo much younger after our mud treatment) we headed, in the pouring rain to "Down to Earth" which is a little coffee shop owned and operated by Matias, who also grows his own coffee. We were going on a tour of his farm. When we got there we were in a group of 6. There was a couple from Arkansas and another from Austria. Matias began by giving us a thorough lesson on our misconceptions about coffee. He walked us through how beans grown at higher elevations are of a harder, smaller quality. Aahhh, size is not important and bigger is not always better. He tutuored us in the density of beans, the texture, smells, and taste. The fact that he was ... read more

The morning dawned hot and sunny so we lounged around the pool for a couple of hours and then walked down the road into the middle of one of the Tico neighbourhoods where Anthony our hotel owner had suggested we eat as they have the BEST food. We walked to Garra-Pata only to find the gate closed but a couple of people inside. Not knowing what to do, Curtis went up and asked, "Abierto?". Si, Si was the answer and they welcomed us inside. Hose was busily donning his crisp white chef's shirt and his cap. It is so amazing how language barriers are overcome. He did not speak one word of English, nor did his wife, and my Spanish is shaky and basic but still we were able to get across to him that we ... read more

We awoke early this morning to the good old sound of ... roosters!! While enjoying a great cup of coffee at the hotel we were mesmerized by the plethora of different bird species at our hotel alone. Our biologist friend, Mark, would have lost his mind at the multitude of birds we saw in a very short period of time. According to the hotel owner this hotel was part of a birding tour so we can expect to see many different ones during our time here. We decided that today was our day to just explore La Fortuna in the daylight to see just what there was to see. We first stopped at a great little panaderia called "Duran" which was recommended in one of our travel books. We each enjoyed a warm pastry for breakfast. ... read more

On our last full day in Montezuma, we hopped on the bus and headed for town to pick up those last minute souvenirs. We went to Organico for a smoothie since most of the stores were just beginning to open. We wandered in and out of shops where I picked up yet another dress and Curtis a couple more shirts! We also bought a very fresh baguette as we were having dinner later with our neighbours. As we got to the bus stop people had started to gather under the tree. Several were looking above and then we noticed that there were a couple of large iguanas up in the tree. Suddenly, one jumped up a branch and the two started to fight. Someone said it was for ownership of the tree. Not sure why they ... read more

After spending a glorious morning soaking up the sun on the beach we decided to trek to Cabuya in search of the ever-elusive La Selva Cerveza Brewing Company (which we learned takes volunteers in exchange for learning the craft of beer making, plus how to speak Spanish and ... you got it! Free beer. Needless to say I had to haul my husband in :). We began the hot dusty walk along the tree-lined road, stopping at various spots to capture those perfect photos. When we got to Cabuya we headed down one of the side roads so we could visit the El Coyote Restaurant. We thought this was so appropriate since we belong to the Meaford Coyotes and are also called the Wandering Coyotes. We saw the statue of the coyote in the distance and ... read more

After our exciting excursion to Isla Tortuga we decided a couple of quiet days were in order! Friday found us catching up on our emails, reading, and tidying up. We hit the beach around 11:30 for a couple of hours then decided to start the walk into Montezuma where we would spend the afternoon and have our first dinner out. We began walking on the dusty road and as the dilapidated bus rounded the bend behind us, we opted to flag it down. We wandered into a few shops and then followed the road that runs parallel to the beach. Along this road was a vast array of homes, from beautiful, large casitas that were immaculately groomed, to shacks that looked like they would collapse in the wind. We continued on until we reached the turtle ... read more

Today Captain Jack (for those of you who know, Curtis makes a mean Jack Sparrow at halloween) and I, ventured into town early this morning in order to take the snorkeling tour to Isla Tortuga. We arrived in town and wandered around, had coffee and then sat out front of the Eco Tour company waiting for information about when and where to board. It turned out that there were 11 people on our boat. News from Costa Rica does not always make headlines at home so I am sure very few people have heard about the Isla Tortuga tragedy that occurred a week ago. A catamaran, that was overloaded, flipped over in the high waves killing 3 people, one of them a Canadian. Don't think that wasn't in the back of my mind when we booked ... read more

Ok we are Canadians. We know what it is like to endure intense winters but down here it is very difficult for us to reconcile how much snow there is at home and the frigid temperatures that have been gripping our area. Here everything, and anything you do, leaves you drenched in perspiration! The intense heat in Costa Rica is unlike anything we have had the pleasure of experiencing in all of our travels. You walk and sweat, eat and sweat, cook and sweat, you just sweat!! We are definitely receiving a cleansing of any and all toxins in our bodies!! Today was our day to travel to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve that is located 2km south of Cabuya, so 5km from where we are staying! We walked down to catch the 8:20 bus which ... read more

We have spent a couple of quiet days just enjoying the peace and solitude of our bungalow and the beach. Our place was being cleaned yesterday, sheets changed, and they even did any laundry we had. What a nice touch! We caught the bus into Montezuma yesterday morning in order to do a little big of grocery shopping. We walked to the bus with Dieter and Monica, the couple staying in the Estrella bungalow. They were going to the beach but told us they had booked their Isla Tortuga tour! The 9:20 bus pulled up at 9:45 and we headed for town. Once we arrived we wandered around and settled on a nice little restaurant where we enjoyed fresh fruit smoothies and we each had a veggie and cheese turnover. We wandered in and out of ... read more

Well, here in Montezuma the Howler Monkeys rise early in order to attend their Sunday morning Evangelical service. They sing, worship, and praise for much longer time and more forcefully on the Sabbath! Finally, after what seemed forever, they said their good-byes to fellow congregational members and made their way off through the trees. Peace at last! The sun sets early in Costa Rica like at home and it is dark by 6:00pm however it is also light quite early in the morning. The sun streams through the myriad of palm fronds beside our window and by 6:30 am we are awake and glued to our books. Our plan for today was to take the advice of our neighbours, Michael and Laura, and visit the small waterfalls that is just down the road from our place. ... read more
