Well, no notes and almost dinner time...finally dragged ourselves out of San Juan this morning...after having a sunset G&Ts but with out the T at The Iguana bar/restaurant ion the beach...great views and a fabulous Thai chicken soup, best Thai food I've had in weeks! (Thanks Di)...but this morning we had to wait an hour or so until the credit card machine got working..all part of the seduction of that place...v hard to leave...and apart from El Salvador (boom boom) the bestest place yet... However, I started out feeling somewhat out of sorts...don't know if it was post birthday comedown or what but given all thats happened, happening and yet to happen I felt like David Bromberg with Someone else's Blues (I swear I don't know why)...so cruising nervously, its sort of strange after a couple ... read more

Well, this is a bonus...for you!...decided to stay another noche here in San Juan del Sur..although its pronounced sewer its not like the blind mullet barrage in one of the last beaches, in fact this is a paradise, really clean, friendly people, no security things, a very seductive little bay...went out with Vladamir this morning,(he spent 3 years in the Caspian Sea with the Russian naval academy, hence the nickname) we dropped Grant off at a surf spot and went on a fishing expedition...almost got a big one, but hey, thats fishing, we followed the birds and came across boiling mobs of bait fish, Vlad throws in the little line with bare hooks, pulls out 2 lttle bait fish, we put them onto hand lines and let them swim...I got 1 big bite but lost it..pulled ... read more

What an amazing thing time is! ..its my birthday where a lot of you are and its not til tomorrow for me here...so thank you for the wishes....time warping from the ruinas back to the 21st century altho' the border x-ing into Nicaragua was not user friendly...I mean how hard would it be just to put up a couple of signs? like passports here and vehicle stuff here...felt like whipping out the felt nib and just writing on the wall...and no-one, even the people who work there, have much idea...a Panamanian english speaking guy asked several of the officials for directions for us...and they turned out to be wrong!!...anyway, we ultimately worked it out...passports were easy, and the bike stuff a black comedy of errors culminating in a waiting game with the last Honduran official who ... read more

Decided to stay another day in Copan Ruinas, such a cute little town and plenty to do...and I missed a bit of ElSal, so back to the Horizonte Surf Camp Hotel.... Another morning and everyone picks up from where they were last night....little Beatrice the 15 yo dynamo who seems to run the little palapa restaurant at the bottom of the property, right on the beach, gets out of the hamaca in the bar where she slept last night, she works from 6 in the am til 9 or later at night with 2 older woman who do the cooking, a wood fire right on the bench, gradually pushing in the branches and small logs that fuel the fire, perfect temp control....we chose the 2 bed bungalows, with aircon and fan!!...just couldn't fir in the wardrobe ... read more

Well, today I decided to take the secret, back way into Honduras from El Salvador...thats nice dear.... What an epic!...got out of San Miguel, yes, one of many San Miguels, there like the Smith name is to telephone books, San Miguels are to maps of central and south america....found the supposed border town just at the end of the road where they said it would be...but where's the road out?..some sort of mystery...the ongoing aversion to signage!...evryone pointing in different directions but the most credible says ´turn off at the casa de mouse´..so we go to a corner, no casa de mouse, and only a dirt track heading off into the sticks!...ask a few more punters, same story, so its off into the wild dirt track yonder...unbelievably bad road, washouts, rocks, everything a good dirt biker ... read more

Soewhere deep in north Honduras....one minute in Guate ..next in Honduras..and you´ll have to excuse the typing cos this is one sicko keyboard..u can see already that the space bar don´t always work.. So, down from the hills and the rareified atmosphere of Antigua..still a quandry as to whether its enjoyable being somewhere just like home or not..certainly a surreal bit of Guate..so, down, down to the coast, hotter and sweatier..then the rain..pissing down, then off to the left, lightning, great bolt hits the ground in the next field, blast of thunder, flashes of light...hole up in a servo until it passes..then down again, out of the coffee and avocado lands, down into sugar cane, bananas..and this where so much fantastic coffee comes from but can anyone make a decent cup of coffee?...like trying to get ... read more

Yes, I know, always been full of it...but now full of espanol...hey, this is an ordinary keyboard...@ is where it should be but no n with the bizzo!...so greetings from Antigua, the city in Guatemalam not the other one...where were we?..Lake Atitlan the huge caldera of the old volcano..320 m deep, stayed at Panajachel on the shores...lots of touristas, shop/stalls all the color of the Mayan textiles, carvings, bags, bits and bobs,,you know... Early in the morning watching a older gringo guy sipping his morning coffee, lips pursing in expectation even before his cup left the saucer...eyes sort of glazed over, gazing blankly out at the street scene...wondering what to do with another day in Panajachel.... Don't fret gentle blogfollowers if you can't find some of these destinations....we also have difficulty finding them sometimes!...just get a ... read more

Trying to get some photos from the last few days... Got out of Quetzaltenango after more wrong turns...if there's a one-way street, I'll always find it...and head down the wrong way!...endless bumper to bumper, trucks, cars, bikes, down narrow, dusty, bumpy, crowded little thoroughfare, sudden turns for a few blocks, back on the straight, cutting along the inside to pass, trucks trying to run me into the gutter, cars pushing at the back wheel, pedestrians dodging out of the way, dirty, dusty, shop fronts or whatever covered in dust, no signs at all, just hope we're on the right road!..get a good passing break and stream past half a km of traffic while they're stopped for roadworks, huge potholes and puddles...always a dangerous move as you can't tell how deep its going to be...finally turn off ... read more

Rugged up for the first time in a while...v strange after sweating it for so long. So, where were we? back to the 22/7 looking for Barra de Cruz, the famous point break...only 100 something ks from that last beach...can't remember, stayed there for 3 days tho'...Tony at his new bar El Burro Barracho was good host, dinky little hotel...surf scene..right on the beach..oh yeah Puerto Escondido, yI think I,ve written it up, tres pretty and in the early stages of development, sure to be unrecognisable in another few years, sorta close for americanos and canadians to fly in......so, on the road, good to be back in the saddle after a couple of days off.....down the highway, lovely curvery again...light and dark shadows under tree lined roads winding down the coast, stroe effect of the light ... read more

Crikey Dearest Readers...2 in 2 days, but it may be a while before the next...Still in Puerto Escondido, a lovely little puerto that is starting to feel the encroachment of 'civilisation' but has been a surfers hangout for yonks...there is some debate between me and the others about the exact role of surfers in opening up the new world...altho' they believe Chris columbus got to the states on a paddle board, Cortes made it to Mexico with a flotilla of longboards and Cap'n Cook, after a tow-in from Tahiti, managed to wind-board it into Bot Bay on a Southerly swell.....my theory has it that the travellers opened up the way but many of them were surfers or passed on the goss so future generations then followed with their boards...and bad habits...oops... Its after 8am and I've ... read more
