Today's afternoon is the town of Yaroslavl, one of the oldest towns in Russia, founded in 1010 (yep, just missed the millennium celebration). Today the city has a population of 650,000 working mostly with oil refining and rubber tire manufacturing. The most amazing sight, in my opinion, was the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Built in 1650, this church has amazing frescoes, as Ernest's pictures capture I think. We listened to a male quartet sing in a small chapel that was really amazing. In addition, we were here on Friday, and as we had learned previously in our Russian tradition discussion, most weddings occur on Friday so they have the whole weekend to celebrate. As such, we saw several bridal couples and Ernest had to photograph them. Also, as a tradition, if the crowd yells "gorda" ... read more

We left St. Petersburg and set sail southeast. Our first stop on 9/21 is a recreated village called Mandrogi. Wooden houses act as craftsman workshops for traditional artwork and there is a Vodka Museum with 2800 types of vodka, although your ticket only allows you to taste test 4. The cranberry and snowberry flavors were my favorites. The next day, 9/22, we stopped at the island of Kizhi. This is an outdoor museum where buildings of Northern Russian wooden architecture have been moved and restored. The main building is the Transfiguration Cathedral built as a summer church in 1714 with 22 separate cupolas on 5 tiers. It is an awesome site. Our next stop on Thursday, 9/23, was a town called Goritsy which was tourist trap extraordinaire. Not much more to say here. Except to say ... read more

Today we traveled outside St. Petersburg to the town of Pushkin to see Catherine the Great's summer palace. From there we went onto Peterhof, Peter the Great's summer palace that is called the Versailles of Russia. Pushkin, Catherine's summer palace, actually dates back to Peter the Great when he gave it to his wife Catherine I. Their daughter, Elizabeth, ordered it expanded from 14 rooms to 300 rooms and each room, like the Hermitage (winter palace) was gilded in gold. This is the place of the famous Amber Room. The room is completely covered in various types of amber. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures in there. The original amber was given by the King of Prussia to prevent a war but during the removal of art in WWII the original amber was stolen ... read more

Jet Lag and Rain slow our progress but it gets better After being met at the airport, we were bused to the boat where we received a traditional Russian welcome of bread and salt. You break off a piece of bread and dip in the salt. Since bread was plentiful but salt was historically very expensive, it was an honor for a guest to be welcomed this way. After some needed sleep, we were ready to attack things the next day starting with a bus tour of St. Petersburg, followed by the afternoon in the Hermitage Museum, then Russian ballet after dinner. I'm not going to go into the history and details on this blog so breathe a sigh of relief, but I will say that St. Petersburg, built in the early 1700's by Peter the ... read more

We arrived fine but tired in St. Petersburg yesterday. However, the boat has no internet and my iPad can't pick up a 3G signal. We are visiting the Hermitage today and Ernest and I slipped away from the group to hit the internet cafe and send this message.....also for me to check the UGA score from yesterday, sounds like a heartbreaker! I will be keeping notes daily on what we see and do and we'll send pictures and notes out when we get back to the states. Again, if you prefer not to be on my distribution, just let me know. It's no problem. ... read more

We are off.......the long trip over to Russia We are making the long trek from Houston to St. Petersburg today. We flew out early this morning to New York, JFK. From here (after a 5 hour wait) we take a FinnAir flight to St. Petersburg with about an hour layover in Helsinki. It's about 9 hours to Helsinki and less than an hour gate to gate to St. Petersburg from there. I have to say I was amazed at how easy it was to get a Russian visa, compared with the awful time I had last year getting a marriage visa from Great Britain. We have to carry along a visitor permit with our visa and we're supposed to check in with local authorities in each town. We're assuming the boat crew takes care of that ... read more

Our last day in Scotland is clear blue sky and in the 60's. A great way to end our week of Loch monsters, castles, battlefields, shopping, fish and chips, salmon from the River Ness, Haggis every morning, and even the occasional Chinese restaurant Ernest managed to find to get his fix, along with the one-pond store. Another generation of Chou's is now officially married in Scotland. Some of you may not be aware that Ernest's parents, James and Nellie, were married in Glasgow at the end of World War II when they were students here. That adds another special connection to getting married here beyond just my childhood dream and my Celtic ancestry (although this week has been all about me, let's be honest). Due to popular demand, mostly my big brother, we were able to ... read more

It's Over! We had a beautiful day at the castle. It was windy but the only day this week it didn't rain and there was sun. We were picked up at the hotel by a 1946 Rover. The driver had to wait a bit cause we having a bit of trouble getting those weird laces to stay tied on the shoes Ernest was wearing. It was so cool riding in this car out to the castle. Ernest can tell more about the car details cause he's into that stuff, but it was cool. We arrived at the castle and our videographer and photographer were capturing every moment. I gave in and let Ernest bring his camera but he was under strict instructions not to touch it till after the ceremony. We walked down the long path ... read more

And I'm not the one shopping. Ernest started the day in search of new tartan ties for himself since he'd bought some on his last trip to Scotland that had lasted 10 years. While in search of these, we found t-shirts on sale for 5 GBP and he bought out his size. We then went to the Highland store looking for those elusive ties, and this really cute little Scottish lass was wearing a tartan skirt that Ernest fell in love with. And she began to charm him. Now here comes the BIG surprise...... After days of pressure from flight attendants, hotel personnel, store clerks, bank tellers, Highland Council Officials and the Man in the Kilt walking tours, all to no avail, to have Ernest wear a kilt at the wedding, this cute little Scottish lass ... read more
