Geo: 31.7128, -110.067Tombstone Arizona is the reason you do a road trip in the United States. Tombstone has a colourful, if somewhat violent and lawless, history that has been exaggerated in ways only Hollywood can do. It's the quintessential wild west story of the early days of the taming of the American frontier. Hardened men chasing the dream, unbridled patriotism, rough justice, and a boatload of guns- it just doesn't get any more American than this. The Town Too Tough To Die exists today largely to provide a Disney-like experience for adults looking to clomp along the wooden boardwalks in cowboy boots and hats, working the squinty eyes, striking a match against a three-day growth, and with a toothpick dangling ominously- all the while looking for a chance to pick a fight with Doc Holiday (or ... read more

Geo: 32.3067, -106.778Now that Dave B has reached the lofty heights of sixty five years well-lived, we expect that he will start to shrink, begin wearing fedoras, drive with his turn signal on all the time, and start forgetting all of those distant childhood memories (and things that happened yesterday). There's not much we can do about the first three but we thought we might help with some replacement childhood memories. We tried to track down a bouncy castle for him but we had to settle for a day of tobogganing- there was no snow in the neighbourhood but there was a huge national park filled with snow-white sand dunes. And just to add a little excitement to the mix, White Sands National Monument sometimes closes when the adjacent White Sands Missile Range is actively testing ... read more

Geo: 33.3948, -104.523He's quiet about it but we think that Dave B illegally smuggled himself out of Britain and into Canada in a steamer trunk full of Quality Street Chocolates. With this in-dispute alien background we thought that he'd be particularly interested in what has to be the most famous in-dispute crash landing spot of an illegal alien in the U.S.: Roswell, New Mexico. The tin foil hat types hold that an alien spacecraft was flying over the New Mexico desert observing secret US nuclear weapons activity, but crashed after being hit by lightning, killing the aliens on board; a government cover-up duly followed. We did hook up with a guy named Dennis in a back parking lot and, after an exchange of word codes, he squeezed us into his vehicle and took us to all ... read more

Geo: 35.2072, -101.834Our time in Texas with the Killer B's is going to be brief but if you're in Texas you have to do the cowboy thing so our first stop was a horse ranch. The pace was decidedly methodical but these weren't trail horses so you could easily wander off on your own and channel your inner Clint Eastwood. We were also fortunate to be skirting the second-largest canyon in the United States, the Palo Duro Canyon. It is roughly 70 mi (110 km) long and reaches a width of 20 mi (32 km) at places. The owner of the ranch was part Comanche so she filled us in on the tragic history of the canyon. The land had remained under American Indian control until a military expedition was sent in 1874 to remove the ... read more

Geo: 35.1786, -103.725We were told that senior citizens tend to get up pretty early in the morning so we made sure that we started our first full day on the 65 Years Young Birthday Tour before the crack of dawn and we were in our vehicle at 5:00am. Where we going at this early hour? Well, despite our many years together, DH has not always picked up on my inherent sensitivity and this was a case in point. I had picked the very sedate sport of star gazing the night before but DH was adamant that, for his birthday, we take Dave B for a balloon ride over Albuquerque (home of the world famous Albuquerque Balloon Festival)- this despite the fact that Dave has a well advertised fear of heights (and, as a newly minted senior ... read more

Geo: 35.6915, -105.937Within the span of one day of driving we went from the heat of El Paso to the cool temperatures of Albuquerque, New Mexico. On this road trip we've seen a large spectrum of weather types, so why does a bout of cold temperatures matter? Well Deb B (the female half of the Killer B's) surprised her hubbie on his birthday with a trip to New Mexico to join us on our road trip for a couple of weeks. So again, why are the cooler temps a potential problem? First of all we think that the Killer B's are expecting to escape a Canadian winter for at least a short period of time- but the temperatures in Toronto have actually been higher than those of Albuquerque so far this year. And secondly, since Dave ... read more

Geo: 31.7592, -106.487As much as DH enjoyed San Antonio, I really liked El Paso. I had always conjured up images of the border town of El Paso, Texas as a rough and tough gunfighter town which personified the old wild west days. The city's lawlessness in the late 1800's had earned it the moniker of “Six Shooter Capital” and the city's first and oldest street was the scene of the infamous Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight. And when we found out that a local pawn shop had the trigger finger of an infamous Mexican bandito on display (and for sale) we knew this could be fun visit. There's a natural link to a colourful piece of history in that Pancho Villa was a Mexican Revolutionary general, provisional governor of the state of Chihuahua, and was ... read more

Geo: 29.4245, -98.4946We started this road trip through the U.S hoping to explore both the loud, boisterous, and somewhat biased pride that Americans have in their own country, and the eccentricities that seem to stir the whole drink. We haven't been disappointed. Even the term 'Americans' seems to have been hijacked (everyone living in North and South America are technically 'Americans') by a population that genuinely struggles to understand why everyone wouldn't want to be a U.S. American and generally views eccentricity as a needed flamboyant colouring in life (how else do you explain Las Vegas- an elaborate adult playground in the middle of the desert??). We've seen examples all through the country, but San Antonio has offered up a particular sampling of extremes. First up is the Alamo which is arguably the site of the ... read more

Geo: 30.2676, -97.743Most of the more significant incidents in U.S. history are immortalized with some sort of memorial and/or museum but the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco might be the one exception. Eighty two Branch Davidian followers and 4 ATF agents were killed in the siege which ended when the compound burned down. Apparently there is a plaque that sits near the residual of the burned buildings but it is on private property now and the reception has been reported as a little hostile so we gave it a pass (it also seemed a touch ghoulish for us to visit). I suspect that the tragedy is still a little raw and given the controversy around who was at fault for the ending, it may be some time before there is any formal recognition of the event. ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Fort Worth January 9th 2016

Geo: 32.7485, -97.3292Texas invokes a lot of rugged images and we did kind of expect that we would be part of a wagon train as we crossed the border. DH was already going somewhat weak in the knees at the thought of a black hat cowboy jingle-jangling by us as we tip back a Starbucks late on a sunny Texas patio. She was blaming the weak knees on her recent surgery but she keeps calling me "pilgrim" so I'm really working hard on my best Clint Eastwood squint. Texas isn't just cowboys and oil men and we did run into some of that varied history almost right away. We stopped to see Bonnie Parkers grave (of Bonnie & Clyde fame/shame) with a slightly twisted epitaph, Lee Harvey Oswald's grave (murderer of JFK) with absolutely no epitaph ... read more
