Ostrag Monastery & Budva days 9-11 (July 6 - July 8) Leaving Sarajevo we took a bus to our next destination, Ostrag Monastery. The road from Sarajevo through the nearby mountains was very narrow with some lovely sheer drops, but this of course meant great views. Especially initially we were on a narrow country road with not much passing room for the oncoming traffic. You can see why this area is spoken of in the same breath as Switzerland. We were met at the roadside stop by a local mini-bus for the rest of our journey. If we thought the previous roads were narrow then this last part had us all holding our breath. The road snaked up the side of a mountain, with loose edges that one more than one occasion we had to move ... read more

Sarajevo and Mostar day 6-8 (July 3 - July 5) An amazing bus journey from Belgrade to Sarajevo through the ? Mountain range. Granite outcrops on top of high mountains, and gorgeous valleys. We took a local trolley bus upon arrival, once the electrics had been restored as there had been a problem down the line. As we drove through you could still see the scars of the recent war marking the building with bullet and mortar holes visible in many buildings, with others you can see the patches but the painting was yet to be completed. We were staying in a lovely Pension and we even had a lounge suite. Our room had ensuite while the others had to share. Our orientation tour took us through the modern area of Sarajevo, with Austrian architecture and ... read more

Belgrade day 4-5 (July 1-2) A very local train to Belgrade (plastic seats) but comfortable enough for the short journey. Then a half hour local bus to our hotel, who didn’t have our booking and they were full from having the European Youth Games in town. While our leader sorted it out, we went in search of coffee and a toilet (the hotel refused to let us use theirs!). Fortunately, the coffee shop had no problems letting us use their toilet, even before we’d ordered so our faith in Serbian hospitality was restored. We took taxi’s to the alternate hotel that had been arranged for us. This was in a much better location in the centre of the city, even though it was a rather tired hotel in need of renovation. We were now very late ... read more

Novi Sad 2-3 (June 29-30) I met the rest of the group on the work to the train station. Our train trip was a warm but comfortable enough one on the way to Novi Sad, Serbia. The border crossing was pretty painless and we were soon there. We had lovely rooms in Novi Sad. The town had a very alive feeling and lots of cafes. Our orientation work took us past the local market and over the Danube to the local fortress. The interesting feature on the clock tower was that the hands were opposite to what you expected the long indication the hour and the short the minutes. Something to do with making it easier for boats on the river to tell the time. It was also interesting to learn that anyone with a view ... read more

Budapest day 1-2 (June 28) This tour had begun the day before, and as I had spent some time in Budapest before I had opted to take a more convenient flight that had me join the group a day later. There was a note that had the details of when we were to leave the following day. I grabbed a nap before heading out to work the now familiar streets of Budapest. There was a festival around the chain bridge so I wandered through. The Danube had overflowed it’s banks and was full of debris from the rain that had occurred upstream. It was more a murky brown than blue that day. I met my roommate that night, a girl from Boston. The following morning I grabbed coffee and some wireless time at the Polish Starbucks ... read more

Istanbul day 20-21 (June 26 -27) We arrived in Istanbul passing great views of the Bosphorous and the magnificent Mosques on the way. Our hotel was in the Sultanhamet area so really handy to all the usual tourist sites. A nice casual breakfast while we waited for our rooms to ready, before heading out on our orientation work and to get some Turkish Lira. We wandered around the streets and Blue Mosque area then grabbed some lunch, before heading to the Taksim Palace. It was quire an amazing area, especially the Harem. The following day I headed off to the largest Mall in Europe, after walking across the bridge. The mall was out of the old town area. The mall was certainly large, but not a lot of people in it. I needed some cooler clothes, ... read more

Plovdiv and Overnight train day 18-19 (June 24 -25) We took a bus trip to Plovdiv through some amazing mountain ranges. We stayed in a hostel in the heart of the old town area of Plovdiv and a short walk down to the main street. Plovdiv has many Roman ruins including an amphitheatre that is being excavated right under the main streets. The Romans were here but also the Thracians (who I don’t know much about). A short walk up the hill from our accommodation and you find yourself suddenly on the top of the hill with a great outlook. The Thracian ruins were here looking older than the Roman ones. It was sad to be leaving the good food of Bulgaria so we made the most of it for lunch. I also made the most ... read more

Sofia and Bansko day 15 -17 (June 21 - 23) The truck was still wedged in our street the next morning, so we headed up the stairs with our luggage to walk the long way around to the Bus station. The trip was on a fairly comfortable bus. We sat near a young girl who was a local Bulgarian singer who gave us some tips on Sofia and some insight into Bulgaria. When we got to Sofia our rooms were in a fairly central area but in a hotel that was fairly tired. I ended up having a day in as I‘d jarred my wrist and it was fairly painful. We had a farewell dinner that night for one of the group who was leaving a few days early. Next morning I walked in the rain ... read more

Veliko Tarnovo day 13-14 (June 19-20) A fairly long and hot train ride to our next destination. The border crossing again was fairly painless, just a bit time consuming and always hotter when the train is not moving. I was glad when our leader sourced some cold water for us at a rather long train stop. I had a brief conversation with an older man who got into the cabin I was stretched out in. He asked where I was from. I asked if he was from here. He indicated that this was a big crossroads, and that the announcements that we could hear were about our train but I couldn’t work out what they meant. Eventually we moved on and arrived at Veliko Tarnovo which had previously been the capital of Bulgaria some time ago. ... read more

Bucharest day 12 (June 18) It was a short train journey to Bucharest the capital of Romania. Our hotel was actually 3 star and a nice surprise. I took the metro to the down town area with a friend who had volunteered to help me get an external hard drive. He shook his head at the idea of going to an electrical store and then proceeded to show me how things worked in Romania. Using a web site we found a couple of hard drives that looked promising and arranged a meeting with the seller of one. We took the metro a bit further out of town and met a guy on the street corner and after inspection and exchange of the cash I had my new external hard drive. It was new and light so ... read more
