Madrid - September 10-12 After 2 brief nights in Barcelona, I took the metro to the main train station (Barcelona Sants) planning to just buy my ticket there, as I hadn’t figured out a better option previously. Upon arrival I saw that there were hourly trains to Madrid but the signs indicated many had sold out, or were restricted to VIP passengers. I got to the ticket window and asked for my ticket, and was asked if I wanted business class and I shook my head. The attendant then seemed to be searching for a ticket, and I was thinking I may have a long wait for an available train. However, he said that business class was 40% off, making it only 9 euros more than 2nd class so I eagerly said “yes thanks”. It was ... read more

Barcelona take two - September 8-9 I had an early start to head to Barcelona from Bled, a taxi picked me up at 6:45 to take me to the train station. The hotel breakfast didn’t open until 7 so they kindly packed me a breakfast for on the way. At the station I purchased a ticket for Zagreb, I wasn’t really dressed for the cooler weather and the girl wondered if I was cold. I said no, but after the half hour wait on the small platform I was looking forward to getting onto the train. We all got ourselves ready for the arrival of the train, and then an announcement came over the speakers. Of course I didn’t understand it but thought it must be a delay. I went back to the ticket booth where ... read more

Bled - day 14-16 - September 5-7 We had the luxury of a private transfer (two cars) to take us to our final stop in Bled, Slovenia. It was a pleasant journey on good freeways. Our driver was a young guy who had a rafting and other adventure sport business, was a taxi/car-hire person, as well as being a policman. Very hard working! We had a long wait in a queue to cross the boarder into Slovenia and back into the Schengen zone. You can see why the removal of border checks is a high priority as it must be costly as well as frustrating for those that need to move frequently between countries. Our driver said that we would be driving across almost the whole width of Slovenia from here - taking about an hour. ... read more

Rovinj - Day 13 (September 4) It was an early start, 6 am to catch the Catamaran ferry to Rijecka which was the largest town we’d seen in Croatia. From here we caught a bus to Pula, where we elected to spend a couple of hours on the way to Rovinj, so we could see the Roman Colosseum here. It was about a 10 minute walk from the bus station where we had stored our luggage. As we rounded a corner a mostly in tact Colloseum towered in front of us. It was the most impressive ruin I’d seen to date, and made up for the ones I was missing by having to leave Italy out of my travels. It was slightly eerie walking around this ampitheatre imagining this stadium as it was used for gladiatorial ... read more

Rab Days 10-12 (September 1-3) We reversed our local bus trip back to the bus station and boarder our coach for the journey to Rab, I managed to stop in the bakery to get some burek (zeljanica) for breakfast they were fresh from the oven. Even more amazing coastline for this stretch of the journery. Visible from the mainland were long thin islands that were denuded of trees due to a wind that came through the area. These islands were a clay pink in colour and they eflecteion they made in the surrounding crystal clear blue waters created a breathtaking view. The road skirted the coast for most of the way similar to the great ocean road. We had a connecting bus to catch that would take us to Rab Isaland. Our leader assured us that ... read more

Zadar - Day 9 (August 31) Bus travel again, but this afforded more great views of the Croatian coastline. From the bus station on the outskirts of the town we took a local bus to the harbour and old town. I‘m sure the locals just love it when a group of travellers with back packs cram onto their buses. This one was packed and most of our luggage was piled in the centre trapping one lady in, who panicked that she wouldn‘t be able to get out, and feell over bags and was caught by our leader who wa then stuck balancing bags and a lady. She needn‘t have worried as we all were getting off at the same spot. Nothing too hurt, just pride. We wandered through cobble streets to find our small local hotel. ... read more

Split - Day 6-8 (28-30 August) We left Korcula at 5:45am taking a Catamaran Ferry for a few hours journey to Split. Split is a larger town on the Dalmatian mainland but it too has an old town, or more correctly a palace compound. We stayed right in the heart of it. The palace was of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who loved Split for it’s beautry and therapuetic thermal spas. He built himself a palace here in the late 3rd century, for holidays and later for retirement. However, after his death it became disused and some time later (7th century) permission was given to some Romans to return from their exile and to set up insdie the palace area. Accordingly, many of the palace buildings are no longer there, having been replaced by ordinary dwellings, but ... read more

Korcula day 4-5 (26-27 August) We took a local bus to the bus station to catch our coach to Korcula. It was a scenic ride along the coast to the small town Orebic where the bus got on the Ferry to take us to the island of Korcula after a few hours drive. We had private rooms again here, which were right in the old town. Korcula is a very pretty place, with clear and calm waters that invited you to just spend the day watching the sea from the waterside cafes. Of course we did more than that. The first night we took a local bus to a farm that had made a restaurant on their property that served local dishes from local produce. A real feast. The next day we went sea kayaking which ... read more

Dubrovnik - Day 1-3 (August 23-25) Lovice was kind enough to get up at 5:30am to drive me to Dusseldorf airport in Germany (as the trains wouldn’t get me there on time), which is about the same distance as Amsterdam. We got there with me being a nominal navigator but it was fairly straight forward, and of course no border checks as we were inside the Schengen zone. We had a final breakfast of croissant and brie and said farewell for now (or as I had learned the casual good-bye in the Netherlands is “doei” (pronounced do-ee) which I really like and am going to try to see if I can get it into the English speaking vocabulary. Smooth flight to Dubrovnik, followed by an airport shuttle into town. I was there a day early ... read more

Week Three - Including Amsterdam and Nijmegen In the final week in the Netherlands we did many of the usual daily things, but also made the trek to Amsterdam and Nijmegen. Wijchen is about 2 hours by train to Amsterdam and so Lovice and I left Jos and kids behind for a day out. We left early, expecting to catch 3 trains, only to find that there were works on the line and our train had been replaced by bus. This afforded a different view of the countryside on the way to our first connection. Once we got to Amsterdam we headed straight to a coffee and cake “café“ (careful to avoid Coffee Shops which are the venues for the sale of Amsterdam’s legal drugs rather than for what we were after). We had purchased a ... read more
