Visiting Cousins I need to put this section in context before you read it One half of the purpose of the trip to North America is to visit relatives - now mostly cousins as my one uncle died long ago and three out of four aunts have died in recent years. I was born in Montréal but left at the age of 6, I think. Much of my memories are of the streets in Montreal where we lived, and the Mountain nearby. But there are also quite vivid memories of the region around St Donat - north of Montreal, where I spent several summers as a child. Since leaving I have been back three times only. It’s about 30 years since I was last here with my wife Lynne, so the visit is full of anticipation, ... read more

On the 17th we journeyed north from New Milford PA into NY State following the highway along the scenic Susquehanna River valley. We make our way east of the Lake Ontario up to the St Lawrence River ready to cross into Canada the next morning. It's the same strategy we used on the way in, which allows us to cross early at a quiet border crossing without undue stress or pressure. For some reason I failed to take advantage of our proximity on the east side to the Lake Ontario or equally the west side of the Adirondack National Park and take a route right up the middle - thus missing some 'new' scenery before I realise what I have done. What was i thinking of? It's that thing again that RL Stevenson talks about "It ... read more

Through the Endless Mountains to New Milford PA and on through NY State to the St Lawrence This whole entry is dedicated to our stay at New Milford PA, a charming 'village' in the Endless Mountains - another area we must try and return to in the near future. It's worth just coming here and investigating the area - loads to do and look at. Ski, walk, cycle, boating, history, industrial archaeology. This was our overnight stay after visiting the Harley factory in York PA and the Amish country nearby. It was at the end of a long day (too much to go into here - but see previous entry covering the Harley visit). So after a long day of visits and travel, on a hunch starting with my Garmin Satnav B&B listing we came off ... read more

A tour around the Harley Production line - without any production and around Amish country finishing with a family style meal at an Amish Farm Restaurant - fit to bust! Then onto highway 11 towards Interstate 81 we head out across Amish country through the Endless Mountains of NE Pensylvannia The previous night we stayed on the Lincoln Highway at an independent Motel - the Cross Keys - just north of Hanover PA. The Motel itself is an adequate standard, although the staff have no sparkle. The modern diner next door however is a treat, good basic American food, and bright bubbly staff. Our waitress is the most qualified we have had yet out of an almost endless line of college students - she is an Attorney - equivalent to our English Barrister, but is having ... read more

Along the Blue Ridge to the D Day Memorial at Bedford VA On our return journey to the Blue Ridge Mountains we were advised by our host at Orchard gap to visit the D Day Memorial at Bedford VA. It is or was a work in progress. At the time of our visit (mid August 2009) it's 9/10ths complete. It's run as a private foundation not by the state - which is surprising. What makes it a worth while diversion from the Appalachians is that this Memorial site is laid out as a walk through three dimensional experience, symbolic of the battle itself. The landscape and architectural features of the site variously representing Allied command in England, the Normandy beaches and dedications to the various military leaders, and armed divisions that took part in the planning ... read more

On Friday 14th August we started heading north from Savannah for our journey back, across the Blue Ridge this time instead of along it. We were heading ultimately towards Waynesboro VA which is exactly on the split between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Shenandoah Skyline Drive. In fact they are part of the same Appalachian Ridge, but are divided by the saddle that carries the road between Charlottesvile and Waynesboro. But first we decided to aim for Fancy Gap which is a bit further south on the Blue Ridge and stay for the second time at the Inn at Orchard Gap. In order to get there on time we head out north on I-95 (interstate = motorway for us Brits) then I-26 towards Columbia SC then I-77 round Charlotte SC. We make good progress by ... read more

12th and 13th August. At last we reach civilisation again. Savannah, Georgia I had read somewhere was supposedly saved or rather not destroyed by Union General Sherman during the Civil War partly because of its architectural beauty and uniformity. Although, it may be more likely the case that as the Confederate army had withdrawn and the mayor had surrendered the city, it was spared. As the city had surrendered General Geary of Sherman's army undertook to protect Savannah's citizens and property. Apparently it was Sherman's scorched earth policy that gave him military success in the South - not least because of the fear that was created by it*. *Attached to that policy was the instruction to treat all citizens fairly (even as they had their crops and assets stripped!) - unless they gave the Union Army ... read more

11th August. Our first 'bad' day. The promise of a scenic route following the Savannah River Scenic byway didn't materialise. See . OK it was probably a lot do to with the heat and the fact we didn't have time to 'off route' to some of the more scenic attractions suggested, and it was better than a plain highway as it was tree lined most of the way and fairly quite for the most part - but nothing of real interest, dead straight and nothing near the actual river for most of the way. It wasn't helped by temperatures of 94 F. over most of the 160 + miles. Most of the way there are sad looking settlements with closed shops and factories. People are living in real poverty - tumble down shacks right next to ... read more

Today we rode the Dragon - as decribed on our previous blog entry. See which is mostly on a small section of route 129, which we then followed more or less dues south and linked into route 143 and 165 - the Cherohala (Cher-o-haay-la) Skyway. The scenery was probably spectacular as usual - I didn't notice it though as you have to keep your focus totally on the road. It's very dangerous as bends come in close groups with little time to read what's coming up. What's coming up is anything from adverse camber to sudden dips and gravel strewn over the curve as some pr*t in a 4X4 has ridden over the soft verge. Although our speed got up about 50 plus a bit the legal limit is set at 30/35 mph, and believe me ... read more

Yesterday after staying in very classy but (our most) expensive B&B in Waynesville N.Carolina (a pleasant town way off the Bue Ridge) We visited Mount Mitchell (see pics) and the Museum of Minerals in North Carolina a really good example of interactive learning which explains the way minerals and rocks are formed, and also the importance of mineral mining in this area of the US - not least that it is today the main producer of computer chip grade quartz (silicon chip?). We also visited the Cherokee Indian Museum a particularly sobering experience which charts the demise of 12000 year old culture at the hands of white settlers and the British Crown within a few decades - complete with false treaties, forced deportations on trains and concentration camps. Sound familiar ? After that we went over ... read more
