From the moment I submerged my face in the crystal clear water and realised I was swimming with Moorish Idols was the moment I experienced the purest sense of joy. Pure because it cost nothing and I was clad only in bikinis, snorkel & mask without the interference of anything modern or commercial. Seeing sea life as it is, no tricks, no gimmicks, no hard sell, just them and me sharing a space and equally curious of each other. This was my first day on Gili Trawangan! Trawangan Island is one the three tiny Islands just off the coast of Lombok. Each Island is fringed with white sand, aqua waters and a kaleidoscope of reef fish. Trawangan is known as the party island among the three where there is an open air party at one of ... read more

Journey to Gili Trawangan Island. Travelling to the Gili Islands was completely unplanned and was decided over a Bintang by the pool with our neighbours at Dua Durra Guest House, Kuta. It was there I met an intriguing married couple, she was from Italy and he was from Sulawesi, Indonesia. I immediately struck up conversation with them as I was travelling to Sulawesi after Bali. So, together we decided to venture to the Gili Islands the day after next. This was their second trip to Trawangan Island and my first. I had heard from an Aussie backpacker the day before who recommended the Gili islands as a must see/do! But first we had to leave Bali, this is where the headache began.. literally! I am 40 years old and I like to think I have learnt ... read more

Mui Ne was a little surprise package for me as I discovered it had many faces. Each one diverse from the next. I did little here besides walk, ride, read, swim, sleep and eat. The Ocean looked clean and I relished in the chance to have a swim, sink my toes in the sand and smell the salty water. The water is not aqua blue as you may see in the southern beaches in Thailand but the atmosphere is tropical & beachy and uniquely belongs to Vietnam, no where else. My guest house was right on the waters edge so the constant lapping of waves were ever present morning, noon & night. As for sight seeing, well you could pretty much do this in one day as the attractions are fairly grouped and around 50km round ... read more

I mentioned to a friend in Vung Tau that I was heading to Mui Ne for a week in which she exclaimed in a very surprised manner, "What on earth are you going to do in Mui Ne for a week?" Mui Ne is about a 4hr bus ride from Ho Chi Minh costing about $7 or $8 if, like me you came from Vung Tau. The Bus ride is, to say the least a hair raising experience with traffic as chaotic as always. One of expats advised me to always travel by train in Veitnam as the buses are often in road accidents and as I sat on this bus knowing I had completely ignored his advice, I was silently praying we would make it there without incident. A near miss with another bus, saw ... read more

I always find it remarkable how in life how peoples paths cross as well as the timing of these events. My journey crossed paths last week with a remarkable lady which resulted in a chance of a life time opportunity for me. Her name is My Huong. My Huong co-managers three orphanages in Vung Tau, Vietnam & although her title is Project Manager she wears many hats. From Nurse to Teacher to Financer she is dedicated & completely hands on and with the help of a remarkable team, they provide a safe, healthy home for Orphan children. My Huong herself has an inspiring life story, so much so that she was chosen to share her story by an Australian TV Network covering the story of Children who were involved in Operation Baby Lift in 1975. Bowen a hidden gem on the North Queensland Coast in Australia. A small seaside town that jutts out onto the coast and is surrounded by water. You truly feel as though you are on an island when your there. Backpackers flock here from March to October for work on the farms for seasonal picking & packing and retired southerners flock here with camper in tow to share the sun and escape from their otherwise freezing winter. Bowen is a tropical paradise and if you asked a lot Australians if they knew where it was they wouldn't have a clue. I took advantage of every opportunity to photograph the pristine beaches and surrounds and now am sharing with the whole world, the paradise called Bowen. As this is a small town you can access all parts ... read more

A man asked me once why I was here in Vung Tau. Obviously it is off the tourist route and very few people know much about it. I on the other hand had heard words like Vung tau, Long Tan & Nui Dat for as long as I can remember. I knew there was a country called Vietnam before I knew the name of any other country in my young life. My father is a Vietnam Veteran who served with the Royal Australian Airforce. He first went to Phan Rang to work on the Canberra Bombers with 2 Sqn. The squadron won a Presidential Citation in Vietnam. They came home so he was transferred to Vung Tau, 9 Sqn Hueys. He was in a guarded contonment at Vung Tau Airstrip. He flew with the choppers to ... read more

Luang Prabang was not only a welcome sight from the long boat ride, but also a very welcoming town for the travellor. This is peak season and there are plenty of tourist walking about. Guest houses are everywhere, no need to get a taxi just walk about and you will find them. The prices here I felt were a little high compared to Thailand with some basic guesthouses charging $50US per night. We were offerred a room for $12US per night so we decided to go & see. It was basic but good enough. But first today, its motorbike time and I have been itching to hire a bike and just ride out into the country. Ride through the small villages and smell the country air (sometimes earthy, sometimes spicey, sometimes smokey and sometimes putrid) but ... read more

Here are a few selected Photos I chosen of Bangkok. The city is beyond my expectations as far a size. Khao San Rd was everything I thought it to be & more. If you do choose to stay in the area of Khao San Rd be prepared for noise after dark which will filter into your rented idaho. Its close and in walking distance to the Grand Palace & Wat Phra temple for the obvious touristy sites as well as being right in the hub of the feista of pubs, clubs, malls & stalls. Its all here under your nose. ... read more
