The thing I love most about travelling is that it forces you to live in the moment. You never really think more than a few days ahead, if that. It's about what you're doing now. How do we get there? Where does that go? I wonder what that's like. And it gives you an incredible feeling of freedom. At home, we bog ourselves down with worries and plans that keep us focused on what will happen in the future. But when travelling, all that stuff doesn't matter. You deal with it when it happens.

In 2008/09 I went backpacking round the world. Well, some of it. I'm hoping that I'll be off on another adventure soon, but for now, while im at University, I'll be sticking to shorter trips. I've got to go somewhere, I'm thinking europe.

My fave travel quotes.

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." - St Augustine

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain

"Not all those who wander are lost." - J.R.R. Tolkien

“When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.” – Clifton Fadiman

"I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything.” - Bill Bryson

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land.” -G.K. Chesterton.

Famous last words. I should have known as soon as I'd said it. That conversation had even included the idea of me standing in the rain holding a framed picture of those words... But anyway, Graduation had seen the Well-Ville household go our separate ways into the Big Bad World of Unemployment (some of us). A week later, having spent more than enough time re-introducing ourselves to living with our parents, three of us congregated in North Wales for a camping/ road trip. The plan was to climb Snowdon the day after we arrived and our campsite wasn't far from the beginning of the PYG track, the one we panned to take. The campsite itself (at this point) was very good. Situated in a valley, by a lake it was a very pretty location. The amenities ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz » Marrakech December 21st 2012

Firstly, i'll just explain the title. 'Marrakech', coz thats where we were, and 'Express' because I reckon its a place you want see and get out of as quickly as possible. Also, the song... It's in your head now isn't it? :D So, Marrakech. You will get scammed in some shape or form. This is a fact. Its best just to accept it and move on. Our first day consisted mainly of getting completely lost. Marakech is a maze of markets and houses, unnamed alleys and dusty roads. The mosques are the best navigation tool. They are all named and because it's prohibited for buildings to be taller than a mosque, you can always find your way to one. Although we hadn't figured that out yet on the first day, so we spent 5 hours 'exploring'. ... read more

I don't think i've ever been as unprepared for a trip as I was for this one. I needed it, definitely, but I just couldn't be bothered to plan. I knew roughly what I wanted to see, sort of. The Carlsberg factory for example, seemed like a good start to a holiday. And it was. Sat outside in the sun, drinking a beer and catching up with a friend is always going to be a good start. The museum bit; I don't think I've ever been to a museum as bad as that one, and that includes the hat museum in stockport. The best part of it was a room with some bottles in it. Maybe I missed the point somewhere, there should be signs. The day had started badly, a 6am wake up is never ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Herceg Novi July 7th 2011

I wasn't sure if i should write this entry, seeing as it was a holiday. But it's still technically travelling, so here we are. I wanted a holiday. I really wanted a holiday. So, after a quick call to Annie to see if she fancied one too, we booked flights to Montenegro. 10 hours later, plus a few hours on the plane, we landed in Dubrovnik. Finding our taxi didn't take as long as i thought it would, although there was a bit of confusion over what my name was. Not me, I wasn't confused. The sign the driver had said Sparrki. We weren't sure if that was supposed to be me. I now have a dogs name. No sarky comments please :D After a short but enjoyable taxi journey, including a border crossing, we arrived ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris May 3rd 2011

Paris. The city of love, arts centre and famed for a big tower thingy. I wasn't all that enthused about going to Paris. Its one of those places that just hasn't really appealed to me. So suffice to say that i wasn't expecting that much. After a very long day on a coach, we arrived. I was devastated. What had i wasted my money on. There seemed to be rubbish everywhere, with people picking through it, and as we pulled up at our hotel, the grass banking opposite seemed to be the playground of quite a few rats. At this point, i just wanted a bed in a clean room. And after half an hour of standing around for the rooms to be organised (fair enough, there were 80 of us) and being read The Rules, ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin January 6th 2011

Happy New Year! I realise that most of the people who read this were probably with us, but i thought id write it anyway, for prosperity and such. For those that don't know, Annie and I decided quite a few months ago that Ireland for New Years was a good plan. We could escape our families, and pretend that we were travelling again, however briefly. Then my parents decided that they were coming too. Ok. We were there for longer than they were, so we could still have our holiday, and besides, it's only two extra people, and if they got drunk and embarressing, we could ditch. But then there was the surprise. My aunt and cousin were there too. We had gone to Ireland to escape the family and mine had followed us there. Sorry ... read more

We managed to get to Nanchang alright, and then successfully navigated our way to an English speaking kiosk to buy the ticket to Nanjing. Lots of Nans, its very confusing. The train to Nanjing was going to take 19hours, so we treated ourselves to a nice room in a hotel. Oh my god. That room had the best shower I've had for ages! Anyway... In Nanjing, we spent far too much money shopping. Mostly on DVD's. :S We soon realized that that was pretty much all we'd done in Nanjing, so we went for a walk. We were looking for a mausoleum but we found an observatory instead. It was up a hill though, and the cable car we were expecting seemed to be shut. There were some pretty flowers and the views at the top ... read more

Crossing the border to China, the temperature changed dramatically. What's the first thing we did once we got to Nanning? Well Annie dug out the various jackets she had buried at the bottom of her rucksack and i went out and bought a coat. How depressing is this, it's warmer at home than it is where we are right now! And we only have t-shirts. I see a shopping spree on the horizon... We stayed in Nanning only one night, before moving on to Guilin. Both are cities and have a Manchester feel to them, but what makes us love them all the more is the fact that it feels like Christmas, or bonfire night at the very least. We want presents and christmas dinner when we get back! Yangshou is a small town about an ... read more

So I lasted two days on my plain boiled rice and dry bread diet before deciding that the doctor couldn't possibly be right in prohibiting some foods, spicy acidic and uncooked i could understand, but milk? I fell off the wagon with a soft landing into some pizza, which i can even rationalize. I'm allowed bread, the tomatoes were cooked and she never mentioned cheese. I have to say that nothing has ever tasted so nice (except of course grandmas fruit cake) After no ill effects, i carried on eating real food, steering clear of anything i thought would be a bad idea to eat. Arriving at Ho Chi Mihn we had a hotel booked and just needed to get to it. As usual there were scores of taxis waiting outside the bus. The first taxi ... read more

Asia » Cambodia February 15th 2009

Crossing the border was relatively painless, if a little long winded. We had to stop to leave Thailand, to cross the border and then to enter Cambodia. Surely it would be easier to have one stop? Anyway, we paid for a bus ticket to get us to Siem Reap and refused the 'offers' a tout kept giving us of paying a little extra to leave straight away and get a taxi. Eventually he admitted that they had overbooked the bus and that we could get the taxi at no extra cost. Yay! What to say about the roads in Cambodia. Well they weren't initially as bad as we had been expecting. There had clearly been, is a lot of work going on and the roads are being transformed from dirt tracks to tarmac. Driving itself doesn't ... read more
