Hi - back again Well after three days of being rained in and staring ar the walls of our 6 B 7 'cell' I finally figured that even shopping would be better than this. Not sure it was the best choice I've ever made. The rains resulted in floods throughout the region - especially Legaspi City where we went - see the pics. Some observations. . . . . . . More dogs here than I expected, but most of them are extremely thin/skinny and mangy. No real surprise there, but the saddest thing is thsat they do NOT wag their tails. I think in the entire time I've been here - I have literally only seen one dog with a wagging tail. Chooks and livestock live by the side of the road, usually tethered to ... read more

We arrived at Bicol (the region) and then Guinobatan (home of Squish's ancestors ) after dark and so my introduction to this area was sans a view of Mayon. Nothing was to prepare me for what I saw the next day. I've seen photos, Google Earth 3D models and thought wow as any of you at MPL are fully aware, but NONE OF THEM do any justice to just how imposing this majestic mountain truly is in real life. It is truly inspiring and why there are not poems and legends etc written is beyond me. Perhaps there are in Tagalog – don't know. At this stage I've refrained from posting any pics of it, because I am yet to take one that I feel shows anything of the glory of this remarkable feature. Unfortunately, the ... read more

Christmas Day – the drive to Guinobatan, Bicol. It would be trite to say that the driving in Manila/Philippines is chaotic – and not really news to anyone I suspect, but there seems to be some sort of order in all this chaos. The tooting of horns and flashing of lights actually appears to be a form of communication here, rather than just another way of flipping the bird to another driver or expressing disgust. I'm actually surprise at the lack of evidence of accidents here. You simply don't see too many cars with dings or scrapes and there are time when cars pass each other in opposing directions with millimetres either side clearance. Lane discipline is also out the window and yet no-one seems to get upset when someone 'looks like' they're pushing in. Road ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Lake Taal December 28th 2010

Lake Taal,Tagaytay. Christmas Eve was at Lake Taal in Tagaytay with Squish's family. For those of you who are not aware, Taal is the world's smallest active volcano. Having said that – it is in a lake formed in the caldera of an older (“now dormant/extinct”) volcano. I'd been here before (2000) but had only seen it from the upper edge of the caldera (and Google Maps of course), but this time we stayed at a resort on the shores of the lake. Quite a different experience. Met a retired United pilot (Rick) who is the resident expert on Taal (I know because he told me several times) who told me that Taal is a lake within a lake within a lake – 3 lakes in all. We made do with seeing one. Rick is also ... read more

Well after two days essentially confined to bed, we're off an on the road today. Today we're going to Tagaytay near the Taal lake, site of the world's smallest volcano. The thing about it is though, it's actually a volcano that has formed in a crater lake of an older volcano. I recall going here last time (2000), but it was a brief visit, basically for lunch. Today we're going there for a traditional Filipino Christmas with Squish family ( well part of it anyway ). Some personal observations on Filipino local so far.. . . . . It's probably a little cliched to talk about how friendly polite and courteous they all seem to be. As you would expect, hotel, restaurant and retail staff especially so. My observation is that the notable exception to this ... read more

Well it's happened - got the dreaded Manila Belly - forgot to use bottled water when brushing my teeth. At least that's my first suspect - doubt it was anything I drank only drink Colt 45 and Iced Tea. Now I'm laid up in bed for the day - too frightened to venture too far from the dunny. The other day I mentioned where Arthur (Squish's brother lives) and his wife's reluctance to have us see and even greater reluctant to post pics of their lifestyle on this blogs. I still plan to honour that, but she has been kind enough to allow me to post pics of the walk from the road to their home. The day we visited it was wet all the way down despite being a dry day - well as dry ... read more

You know you're going to a good restaurant when there's a sign like this out the front and and armed guard to enforce the regulations In case you can't read it "Please deposit your firearms here" Side not to self - as nice as it can be at some places - if I ever have deep fried pork hocks again - it'll probably be too soon... read more

Another day of shopping for the girls so no pics as such. An interesting note on the security guards at the shopping mall; as you might expect the banks had their own security guards, but interestingly enough, SO DO THE COFFEE SHOPS. Perhaps a precaution against the caffeine uprising. Also had a massage yesterday - 1hrs foot massage and 1 hr full body massage for a little over $25. This include full use of all the other facilities (spa sauna etc). Even though this was fully legit, even here the people are looking for extended opportunities. Well it's yet ANOTHER day of shopping today after brekkie (joy oh joy). I think I'm getting a Barong Tagalog (traditional male formal shirt) for the re-wedding. Think I'll pass on brekkie today, simply find rice, deep fried chicken, roast ... read more
